‘Pahalgam avenged but what about Vadodara boat tragedy?' Suspended BJP corporator says will continue fight for justice
Joshi's suspension from the party came a week after two women, mothers of two students who lost their lives in the 2024 tragedy, had interrupted the speech of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Vadodara, questioning the alleged delay in serving justice.
Joshi questioned if the pain of the victims of the Harni tragedy was 'lesser' than the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking to The Indian Express, Joshi said, 'Truly, asking for justice is a crime within the party… In the April 22 attacks in Pahalgam, 26 civilians were killed and within 15 days, it has been avenged. But what about the 14 victims, including 12 innocent children, of the Harni tragedy…? It was nothing but a disaster made by corrupt officials, against whom we have all the proof. While Prime Minister Narendra Modiji has fulfilled his promise of delivering justice to the victims of Pahalgam, the local leaders of Vadodara and Gujarat have been trying to shield the perpetrators (of Harni case)…'
Joshi is a first-time corporator of Ward-15, where the New Sunrise School – where the 12 deceased students studied and two teachers taught – is located, and families of most of the victims live.
He said he has been seeking 'appropriate action' against officers of the VMC who 'slacked in their supervision duties' of the Lake Zone, particularly the then Executive Engineer of the civic body's Futuristic Cell Rajesh Chauhan, contending that it was the 'duty of the VMC to inspect' the project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
In July last year, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) moved a proposal to decide on the punitive action to be initiated against Chauhan, who has been found 'guilty' in the disciplinary inquiry initiated against him in the case.
Joshi has also been seeking exemplary compensation for the victims, raising the issue on the floor of the VMC's General Board on several occasions. He said, 'Why has there been no action against the officer even after VMC has found him guilty? He retired in August with all perks and benefits, except a meagre cut of Rs 5,000 from his pension as punishment. Why has he not been made an accused in the case? What about the former Municipal Commissioners, who allowed the boating facility to come up without any processes in place…? Even the order of the HC directing M/s Kotia Projects (the contractors) to pay compensation has not been complied with. But compensation is just a consolation… The loss is irreparable.'
Speaking about the episode of May 2 when Sarla Shinde and Sandhya Nizama, mothers of two deceased children — Roshni and Vishwa, interrupted the CM's speech from the audience and sought justice, Joshi said the government ought to have 'shown compassion and large-heartedness'. He said, 'Instead of subjecting the two women to police interrogation, had the CM sahib asked for a microphone to be handed over to them and heard them out, he would have set the example of the sensitivity and compassion that the BJP speaks of. But instead, they were…dragged away…'
He further said, 'They (the two women) were forced to take this step as the city police had turned them away or kept them under house arrest on previous occasions when the CM was in the city. Can the pain of the mothers who lost their children be compared to anything?'
Joshi, whose public spat with then Municipal Commissioner Dilip Rana in March over the cleaning of a drainage line earned him a show-cause notice from the BJP, said he has never spoken against the party. He said, 'I have always raised questions against the system and the administration… I am not someone who barges into offices and threatens officials… I have always approached through right channels, writing letters and requesting action but when the requests are ignored and people suffer, I raise my voice against such officers. If they think that such officers belong to the BJP, then I don't agree with the party…'
While he insisted that the suspension 'does not affect him much' — he will continue to hold the position as an independent corporator, as per the rules — Joshi has decided to 'seek answers from the BJP'.
He said, 'I will write a letter to the party to ask them to enlist the examples when I have damaged the party's image… I only know that I fulfilled my duty as a people's representative and raised my voice for justice and service to people. I believe in that ideology of the BJP — of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. I have no agenda to be famous or become a Minister.'
Last year, Joshi had vowed not to visit the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, which was inaugurated just four days after the Harni tragedy, until the victims are served justice. He said, 'Yes, I am firm on my resolve… Lord Ram does not ask his disciples to come and bow down only in a temple… He is pleased by service to humanity. Lord Ram is in my heart and the way he fought for his principles, so will we. Now that I am not even answerable to anyone, I will ensure that Harni victims get justice with double the power that I have…'

UG admissions: Over 9,000 seats remain vacant across DU colleges
With just a week left for Delhi University (DU) to wrap its undergraduate admissions for the year, more than 9,000 seats are yet to be occupied across its colleges. Speaking to The Indian Express, Haneet Gandhi, Dean of Admissions at DU said the seat vacancies are mainly owing to students not filling their preferences strategically in the initial allocation rounds. 'For instance, students with low scores opted for a course in a top college but were allocated a seat in a course or college they did not prefer,' Gandhi explained. 'Some filled their preferences without a clear awareness of the cut-offs. Along with this, cases of rejections due to improper documents have also been taken into account. This has wasted about 5,000 allocations in the previous round. These students have, however, applied again in the mid-entry window for their choice of college.' She added that off-campus colleges also have vacant seats. Off-campus colleges like Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Bhagini Nivedita see hundreds of vacant seats every year. The mismatch between available seats and enrolments has grown since DU adopted the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) in 2022. Under CSAS, students must list a hierarchy of subject-and-college preferences before the start of the process. Seats are then allocated taking into account CUET scores of the candidates along with their preferences. Once allocated, students must either accept or forfeit the seat, with little flexibility for reshuffling in later rounds. Last year, even after the mop-up round of admissions, which focused primarily on filling vacant seats, over 3,000 seats remained unoccupied. The mop-up round held in late September 2024, allowed candidates to apply based on their Class 12 marks for the seats still on offer. The university will release its third allocation list on August 13, followed by the first lists for extracurricular activities, sports, and Children of War (CW) quotas on August 15. DU has set August 19 as the final date for closing the UG admission process.

About 1.48 cr enrolled in govt schools: Min debunks Oppn claim of falling count
1 2 Lucknow: Basic education minister Sandeep Singh on Tuesday hit back at the Opposition for claims that enrolments at govt schools were dipping and said about 1.48 crore students were enrolled in council schools as of now. "A staggering 1,04,93,389 children are currently enrolled in primary schools, supported by a dedicated workforce of 3,38,590 teachers and 1,43,450 Shiksha Mitras. The govt is committed to maintaining an optimal student-teacher ratio of 30:1 in primary education and 35:1 in upper primary education," he said in the Legislative Assembly. Accusing the opposition of politicizing educational reforms and misleading the public, he said in upper primary schools, 43,01,483 students are being educated by 1,20,860 teachers and 25,223 instructors. Overall, council schools boast an impressive enrollment of approximately 1.48 crore students, guided by over 6.28 lakh educators, including teachers, Shiksha Mitras and instructors. Addressing concerns about school mergers, Singh said institutions with fewer than 50 students within a 1Km radius have been paired with resource-rich schools to enhance facilities and accessibility. "These mergers have not led to any school closures, as all council schools remain operational under the basic education department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The vacant school premises are being repurposed in collaboration with the ICDS department to host pre-primary, play school and nursery classes, with over 3,000 schools already partnering with ICDS and 19,484 ACCEs appointed on a contractual basis," he said. On the issue of raising the admission age to four years, Singh said such a move was not feasible under the current Right to Education Act, which mandates a uniform system nationwide. He highlighted that education and nutrition for children aged 3 to 6 are already being effectively provided through anganwadi centres. Singh also took the opportunity to highlight the Yogi govt's achievements since 2017, noting that over 27 lakh new students have been enrolled this year alone. He contrasted this with the previous Samajwadi Party administration, during which 3.45 crore children reportedly dropped out of school. The current govt, he said, has launched successful campaigns to bring these children back into the educational fold. In a bid to further elevate educational standards, Singh announced the construction of model composite schools at a cost of Rs 30 crore each, with two such schools planned for every district. He reaffirmed the Yogi govt's commitment to taking education quality to unprecedented heights, ensuring that every child in UP has access to a world-class education.
