Caerphilly woman steals goods worth £1,000 from Tesco
Young mum Rebecca Skym, 24, targeted the Tesco supermarket in Caerphilly over a four-day period last month, Newport Magistrates' Court was told.
The serial shoplifter was remanded in custody after she pleaded guilty to stealing:
Groceries worth £79 on April 27
Meat valued at £129.50 on April 28
Alcohol and meat worth £224 on April 28
A £329 TV on April 29
Coca-Cola Zero valued at £11 on April 29
Alcohol worth £294 on April 30
The defendant, of Caerphilly Road, Senghenydd, Caerphilly is due to be sentenced on May 30.
Skym committed these six offences of theft while she was the subject of a suspended prison sentence imposed in January for similar matters.
On that occasion, she avoided jail after stealing £3,000 worth of food, clothes, alcohol and homeware.
The defendant pleaded guilty to 11 counts of theft at stores across south Wales, dating between September and December 2024.
Cardiff Crown Court heard how Skym stole £1,000 worth of clothing from retail giant Next.
She also took joints of meat worth £400 from Tesco in Caerphilly as well as four bottles of vodka worth £267 and 10 bottles of gin valued at £240.
From Aldi, she stole 17 joints of meat worth £176.32, before stealing 11 fragrance sets worth £765 from Superdrug, and 10 perfume sets valued at £350 from Boots in Talbot Green.
She was spared an immediate custodial sentence due to her "previous good character" as she had no convictions recorded against her.
Upon sentencing, the judge also considered that as a young mother, her children's lives would have been "destabilised" if he were to sent her to jail.
She was sentenced to 30 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement, carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and pay a victim surcharge.

Hunt for three masked thieves who broke into Dunfermline petrol station
Three thieves wearing masks stole cash during an overnight break-in at a Dunfermline petrol station. Police have launched an appeal after the incident at the Tesco Turnstone Road filling station at around 12.25am on Friday. It is understood that a silver Ford Fiesta was involved. Later that night, there were two similar incidents at Tesco petrol stations in Glasgow. The 2.20am and 2.40am break-ins are believed to be linked. Colombia reports 33% drop in deforestation in early 2025, with major progress in Amazon parks
Colombia saw a 33% drop in deforestation in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, the environment ministry said Thursday, citing stronger community coordination and a crackdown on environmental crime. Speaking at a press conference, Environment Minister Lena Estrada Añokazi said deforestation fell from 40,219 hectares in early 2024 to 27,000 hectares this year. The government identified 18 active deforestation hot spots, including 13 in the Amazon and others in regions like Catatumbo, Arauca and the Pacific north. 'In the Amazon's national parks, deforestation dropped by 54% ... which is a very good result,' Estrada said, highlighting gains in Amazonian parks Tinigua, Chiribiquete and La Macarena. The Amazon remains Colombia's most affected region, accounting for 69% of the country's deforestation. The departments — Colombia's main administrative divisions — of Meta, Caquetá and Guaviare saw the biggest declines, while Putumayo had a slight increase. Estrada attributed the decline to the government's integrated plan to curb deforestation, which includes community agreements, institutional strengthening, and joint operations with the Defense Ministry and Attorney General's Office. A recent report by Colombia's inspector general noted that while deforestation dropped overall, pressure on protected areas remains intense, with illegal coca cultivation and unregulated mining advancing into national parks. The independent watchdog said that between October 2024 and March 2025, nearly 88,900 hectares of forest were lost nationwide, much of it in areas designated for environmental conservation. The minister said the efforts have led to key arrests, including of individuals tied to the environmental sector. Looking ahead, Estrada outlined a territorial action plan to further engage local and Indigenous authorities. A series of regional meetings is set to begin in June, starting in Villavicencio with Amazon and Orinoquia leaders. Biker caught speeding at 101mph on narrow country road
Adam Knock, 36, pleaded guilty to committing the offence on the A4042 at Llanover near Abergavenny last month on Sunday, April 6. He was riding a Yamaha MT-09 motorcycle, Newport Magistrates' Court was told. The defendant, of Llanelly, Monmouthshire avoided a driving ban due to 'the impact on his business and especially an employee who relies on his wage'. Knock had his driving record endorsed with six penalty points. He was also fined £135 and ordered to pay £200 costs.
