Jaylen Brown Could Be Traded Within Next 24 Hours As Celtics Look To Move Up In 2025 NBA Draft
Jaylen Brown Could Be Traded Within Next 24 Hours As Celtics Look To Move Up In 2025 NBA Draft originally appeared on Fadeaway World.
Following the injury to Jayson Tatum in the 2025 NBA Playoffs, the Celtics' championship window seemed to have closed down. Now, at the beginning of the offseason, it seems like they have decided to blow it all up and rebuild for the time when Tatum returns.

Alongside Tatum, the franchise cornerstone has always been Jaylen Brown. But according to sources, the Celtics are even listening to offers for him. They already traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis and are now looking to even trade the former Finals MVP, Brown. While discussing the impact of Jrue Holiday's trade on both teams, Shams Charania made a major revelation on the Stephen A. Smith show.
'But for the Celtics, this is the start of a very active off-season.'
'The Celtics prefer not to trade Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. But listen, the offers that they're getting right now, and the conversations are going to be had, 'does it reach the value?' and that's the question. So you're looking at a lot of potential movement around the Celtics, and last night was just the start of that.'
'There are multiple teams that have a significant interest in Jaylen Brown. And you think about, for sure, the contract is steep, I understand it. But listen, there are teams, especially in today's NBA, especially in the Eastern Conference, and now what we're seeing in the Western Conference too, it's an arms race in the West. So even if you're a team that's meddling in the playoffs, you're trying to get there, you're trying to make a swing. And I think what we're going to see now in both conferences is a lot of activity.'

The Celtics are aggressively looking to move up in the NBA Draft and enter a lottery position, i.e, get a top-15 pick in the draft. They currently have the 28th pick in the first round and the 32nd pick in the second round in the upcoming draft. Therefore, they do not have the assets to convince another team to trade based on picks alone.
Shams Charania then appeared with Scott Van Pelt on ESPN to give a further update on the Jaylen Brown situation.
"Them phone lines are ringing in Boston. My understanding is the Celtics are getting offers, calls on both Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. The Celtics have a high price threshold for both players; they know how great Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are. I'm sure they're getting some massive offers, some big-time calls as well. Their preference has been to keep both players."
"They are listening, but will a team get there?"

Hence, we expect that in a move up the draft, they will have to include a star player as well in the deal, which could be Brown, looking at the circumstances. We may hear the massive trade news on him within the next 24 hours.
It is important to consider that trading for Brown includes taking on a whopping $304 million contract as well. Therefore, mostly first-apron teams are likely to be making a move for Brown.
Some potential landing spots could include the Philadelphia 76ers, who have the No. 3 pick in the draft and could send Joel Embiid the other way, and the San Antonio Spurs, who were in the sweepstakes for Kevin Durant until they pulled out of the race.
Since the Celtics traded their starting center, they now need a high-level center to replace him, and Embiid may be the solution to that. The 76ers were reportedly looking to trade their No. 3 pick after Ace Bailey refused to work out with them.

Whereas with Chris Paul on the way out of the Spurs, they need a veteran alongside Victor Wembanyama and the young core to potentially make them serious Playoff contenders this season.

Jaylen Brown could be next Celtics trade domino with ‘significant' interest around NBA
It's looking like a fire sale in Boston. Fresh off trading key pieces of their 2024 championship team in Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, the rest of the NBA wants to see if the Celtics will move their Finals MVP, Jaylen Brown, along with complementary two-way wing Derrick White. Advertisement 'It means them phone lines are ringing in Boston,' ESPN's Shams Charania said on 'SportsCenter with Scott VanPelt' on Tuesday following Porzingis heading to Atlanta in a three-way deal. 'My understanding is the Celtics are getting offers, calls on both Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. The Celtics have high price thresholds for both players. We know how great Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are. I'm sure they're getting some massive offers, some pretty big-time calls as well. Their preference has been to keep both players but this is a team that is still in the first apron, still a luxury tax team, still dealing with the uncertainty of Jayson Tatum's status next season.' 4 Jaylen Brown during the 2025 second-round series against the Knicks. NBAE via Getty Images Charania said earlier Tuesday on the 'Stephen A. Smith' show before the Porziginis trade that there were multiple teams with 'significant' interest in Brown. Advertisement He mentioned that Eastern Conference teams could be looking to make a big swing considering the Celtics (Tatum), Pacers (Tyrese Haliburton) and Bucks (Damian Lillard) all could be without superstar players for most of — if not all — of the 2025-26 season due to injuries. 4 Shams Charania discussing the Celtics' moves. @ESPN/YouTube That Boston is even thinking of moving Brown and/or White is the harsh reality for a team that had been in the second tax apron and may be without Tatum for the entire 2025-26 season after he tore his Achilles in Game 4 of the Celtics' second-round series loss to he Knicks. Advertisement Boston is playing the delicate game of trying to reconfigure its roster and get below the second apron while still maintaining a championship window. 4 Jaylen Brown could be available despite his massive contract. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Moving Porzingis and trading Holiday to the Blazers already helped the Celtics get under the second apron in the new, and very complicated, salary cap rules. Trading Brown, whose $49 million salary for the 2025-26 season will be the league's sixth-largest mark thanks to the $304 million deal he signed in 2023, surely will be complicated due to that massive cap hit. Advertisement Charania mentioned Sam Hauser and newcomer Anfernee Simons, acquired in the Holiday deal, as other potential trade candidates. 'Will a team match that price threshold that the Celtics I'm told have set around the league for Jaylen Brown and Derrick White to be able to get them? They are listening, but will a team get there?' Charania said on the eve of the 2025 NBA Draft. 'Just in the span of the last two days, though, they've shed $180 million in luxury tax savings. They've gotten out of the second apron, but with a season next year full of uncertainty, just how much do they want to get out of the aprons and the taxes?' 4 Derrick White and Jaylen Brown could be moved by the Celitcs. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Several teams are positioned well to make swings for a superstar, including the Nets, who are hoarding five draft picks in Thursday's NBA Draft. Brooklyn has been linked to Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo by The Post's Brian Lewis, but there are questions about whether he will be made available. The Houston Rockets, who just traded for Kevin Durant, could also be in the mix, considering they own plenty of the Suns' future draft picks and still retained young players Tari Eason and Jabari Smith.

MLS at 30: 15 Stranger-Than-Fiction Stories
Our MLS at 30 series continues with a wild look at 15 strange, bizarre, or downright unbelievable stories from across the league's three-decade history. From odd player requests and wrong signings to mascots being ejected and clubs sued over their name, these tales remind us just how weird and unpredictable Major League Soccer can be. As MLS celebrates its 30th season, we've dug through the archives to uncover some of the league's weirdest moments — some from the early days, others from recent years. Advertisement Yes, MLS has grown tremendously, but it hasn't always been smooth sailing. Along the way, there have been missteps, misfires, and some truly bizarre decisions. Below are 15 of the strangest stories we could find. (Honorable mentions include Jorge Campos reportedly asking for a Ferrari to sign with LA Galaxy, Crew Cat getting red carded, and the league's first celebrity All-Star Game in 1998.) Enjoy the misadventures of MLS! Kansas City Wiz — But Not for Long Stephen Dunn/Allsport/Getty Images In 1996, Kansas City kicked off its MLS existence with an unorthodox name, the Wiz — a nod to the city's connection to The Wizard of Oz — and a loud, garish kit. After one season, the club quietly rebranded to the 'Wizards' due to a trademark dispute with electronics chain Nobody Beats The Wiz. Instead of going to court, MLS, cash-strapped in its early days, simply tweaked the name and moved on. In 2011, the club would change its name once more, to a more Euro-sounding Sporting Kansas City. D.C. United Takes Soccer to Prison In 2024, D.C. United partnered with the D.C. Department of Corrections and the Twinning Project to bring soccer to local prisons. Starting in August, coaches from the club and its academy ran weekly training sessions at the Central Detention Facility to promote physical wellness and help inmates develop life skills for reintegration into society — one of the league's more progressive initiatives. Alexi Lalas' Rock Album In 1998, Alexi Lalas was struggling with the MetroStars, made a forgettable appearance at the World Cup with the United States men's national team, and released a rock album titled Ginger that no one asked for. It was panned by critics and ignored by fans. Strangely, Lalas has released eight albums, most of them timed suspiciously close to World Cups. Coincidence? Rhett Harty: From MLS Pioneer to Medical ProfessionalAdvertisement Defender Rhett Harty was part of the first trade in league history and a standout on a struggling MetroStars side. But in a lesser-known twist, he was involved in an antitrust lawsuit against MLS over its single-entity structure. After being lowballed on a new contract, Harty left pro soccer entirely and pursued a career in medicine. Alain Sutter Wanted to Tour America — Literally Stephen Dunn / Allsport Swiss international Alain Sutter, one of MLS's early marquee players, requested to be traded to a different team each season so he could 'see the country.' The league declined and assigned him to Dallas, where he impressed until a fluke injury — stepping in a hole — ended his career in 1998. Chivas USA: A Cultural Experiment Gone WrongAdvertisement Chivas USA was created to attract Mexican-American fans in Los Angeles and throughout the country, but the project backfired. The club was accused of hiring based on ethnicity, leading to a discrimination lawsuit by former staff who claimed they were let go for not being Latino. Combined with poor management and declining support, MLS shut the team down in 2014. MetroStars Sign the Wrong Palacios? Image via MetroFanatic In 1998, the MetroStars signed Colombian defender Jose Arley Palacios — but many believe they meant to sign his more famous brother, Everth Palacios, who had just played in the World Cup. The team's yearbook reportedly used Everth's bio by mistake. It's never been officially confirmed, but the rumors never died. Eric Wynalda Pays for a 'Fire the Coach' BannerAdvertisement In 1996, Eric Wynalda feuded so badly with San Jose Clash coach Laurie Calloway that he paid for a plane to fly a banner over Spartan Stadium calling for Calloway's firing. That's next-level player-coach drama — even for Wynalda, who has never shied away from conflict throughout his career. David Beckham Booed by His Own Fans Despite being the league's biggest star, David Beckham was booed by LA Galaxy fans in 2009 after returning from a loan to AC Milan. Fans saw him as a part-time player who cared more about Europe than MLS — and let him know it, loudly and repeatedly. Inter Miami's Backdoor Into the Club World Cup Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Advertisement When FIFA announced its new Club World Cup format, most assumed the MLS Cup winner would represent the league. But after Inter Miami won the Supporters' Shield with Lionel Messi, FIFA and MLS quickly named them the 'host representative,' bypassing the eventual MLS Cup winners, LA Galaxy. A convenient loophole? Absolutely. FIFA needed the ticket sales. MLS Abandons the U.S. Open Cup In 2024, MLS shocked fans by sending mostly reserve teams to the U.S. Open Cup, citing scheduling concerns and player fatigue. Critics saw it as disrespect toward the historic tournament — and a sign MLS is prioritizing its own competitions like the Leagues Cup. The panned move seems to now be taking a turn to redemption as some MLS teams have returned to the competition. Claudio Caniggia Deal Collapses Over Drug Test Shaun Botterill/ALLSPORT Advertisement In 1999, the MetroStars were reportedly close to signing Argentine legend Claudio Caniggia. Local Spanish-language media even broke the story. But according to a former team executive, the deal fell apart after Caniggia was asked to take a drug test and pulled out in protest and feeling insulted. He later returned to Serie A with Atalanta and made Argentina's 2002 World Cup squad. The MetroStars, meanwhile, continued to linger in mediocrity. Freddy Adu: The 14-Year-Old Savior Who Never Was At just 14, Freddy Adu became the youngest player in MLS history and was hailed as the next Pelé. Despite flashes of brilliance, he never lived up to the hype. His journey through Europe and lower-tier teams turned him into a symbol of mismanaged youth talent rather than a star. It also did not help the image of MLS that 30-year-olds were taking pride in smashing into a 14-year-old kid. Clint Mathis Blocked From Bayern MunichAdvertisement After starring in the 2002 World Cup, Clint Mathis drew interest from Bayern Munich — but MLS reportedly blocked the transfer. His form dipped, and he left on a free two years later. A prime example of MLS getting in its own way during the early days of player movement. The MLS Shootout: So American It Hurt From 1996 to 1999, MLS didn't allow regular season draws. Instead, tied games went to a 35-yard breakaway shootout, where players had five seconds to score one-on-one against the keeper. It was meant to appeal to American fans — but instead became a symbol of how out of touch the league was with global soccer norms.
