Future of INDIA bloc not so bright: Chidambaram
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has openly questioned the cohesion of the Opposition alliance, warning that it appears 'frayed at the seams' and might not withstand the political juggernaut that is the BJP.
Speaking at the launch of Salman Khurshid and Mritunjay Singh Yadav's book 'Contesting Democratic Deficit', Chidambaram said, 'The future (of INDIA bloc) is not so bright, as Mritunjay Singh Yadav said. He seems to feel that the alliance is still intact, but I am not sure. It is only Salman (Khurshid) who can answer because he was part of the negotiating team for the INDIA bloc. If the alliance is totally intact, I will be very happy. But it shows at the seams that it is frayed,' Chidambaram, a Rajya Sabha MP, said.
He also hoped that the alliance can 'still be put together, there's still time'.
The former Union finance minister warned that the INDIA bloc was fighting against a 'formidable machinery', which must be fought on all fronts.
'In my experience and my reading of history, there has been no political party so formidably organised as the BJP. It's not just another political party. It's a machine behind a machine and the two machines control all the machineries in India.
'From the Election Commission to the lowest police station in the country, they (BJP) are able to control and sometimes capture these institutions. It is a formidable machinery, as much as can be allowed in a democracy,' Chidambaram said.
In the book, Khurshid and Yadav reflect on the Congress' revival efforts ahead of last year's Lok Sabha elections -- from the emotionally-charged 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' to the 'historic' formation of the INDIA bloc comprising diverse political forces.
Khurshid and Yadav recount how the opposition parties rallied 'to defend the idea of an inclusive, pluralistic India'.
Chidambaram said that poll results have shown that no one can undermine elections in India, which 'still remains an electoral democracy'. 'You can interfere with elections in India. You can tinker with them. But you can't get away with elections. You can't have elections where the ruling party gets away with 98 per cent of the votes... That is not possible in India,' Chidambaram said.
The Congress leader added that if the 2029 general elections take a decisive turn to strengthen the BJP, 'we are beyond repair'.
'The 2029 elections are critical and must return us to a full-fledged democracy,' he said. Concurring with Chidambaram, Khurshid said there were issues concerning the INDIA bloc that needed to be addressed.
'We need to address the concerns. The takeaway from Chidambaram's views is that we have to be prepared for a very major battle in 2029. We have to deal with the whole idea of how to get the alliance partners together,' the former foreign minister said.
He added that the opposition parties needed to think on a larger scale if they were to 'make a massive reversal' in the electoral trends.
'What we have learnt is that we must think on a larger scale. If we only think how many seats we will contest and what will happen once the results are out, we will miss out on the major thing we set out to do, which is to affect a massive reversal of electoral trends in the country,' the Congress leader said.

The CM said that under the 'Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan', all government buildings and sports stadiums in the city will be made disabled-friendly. She also said the government is planning to extend the campaign at the city level and transform Delhi into India's first 'Purple City', a model of urban accessibility and inclusion. The campaign is structured around the 'Sarkar, Samaj, Bazaar (government, society, marketplace)' framework. Infrastructure will be aligned with national accessibility standards in collaboration with government agencies; inclusion will be promoted at the grassroots level by engaging all 21 categories of disabilities, senior citizens, and the local community; and cost-effective, sustainable solutions will be developed in collaboration with vendors, innovators, and CSR partners, the CM said. Gupta also said that there also plans to organise 'Purple Fest' as part of the Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan. The CM has directed the officials concerned to draft a detailed plan for the event. "Visit very good, Germany condemned terrorism": Ravi Shankar Prasad
Berlin [Germany], June 7 (ANI): BJP MP and all-party delegation leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday described the visit to Germany to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism highly successful, noting that Germany has condemned terrorism as well as expressed solidarity with India. Following an interaction at a community event in Berlin, Prasad highlighted the enthusiasm of the Indian diaspora inspired by India's growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and emphasised that the delegation's concerns were heard across six countries, with their mission to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism gaining traction. 'There is a lot of enthusiasm among Indians in Berlin. They are very inspired by India's growth story and the action taken by the country against terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Our visit to Germany has been very good. Germany has also condemned terrorism. We are very satisfied with the visit. We were given a lot of respect in the six countries we visited, and our concerns were heard, and our stance has been made clear,' Prasad added. Former Union Minister and part of Prasad's delegation, MJ Akbar, underscored PM Modi's leadership in the global fight against terrorism, particularly along religious pretexts. He further expressed optimism about the mission's success, suggesting a positive outlook for India-Germany bilateral ties. 'We hope we have played some part in ensuring that the mission that Prime Minister Modi sent us on has been successful. We have conveyed the message that PM Modi will lead the global fight against barbaric terrorism in the name of religion, and that has risen. The reception in Germany has been the most sympathetic. This also speaks well of the future of our bilateral relations,' he added. BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, who is also part of Prasad's delegation, echoed her sentiment, highlighting the delegation's call for close monitoring of IMF funds availed by Pakistan and emphasising the unified global solidarity with India's position. 'We are very happy because we started with a friendly nation, France, and are ending with a friendly nation, Germany. The diaspora has shown a lot of enthusiasm... When we spoke to the governments of different countries, they showed sympathy towards India and are ready to stand with and support us. We emphasised with them that the IMF, which has been availed by Pakistan, needs to be monitored very closely. All the countries have expressed solidarity with India, and they will stand by us,' she stated. The delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, also includes BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, Congress MP Amar Singh and Gulam Ali Khatana, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, AIADMK MP M Thambidurai and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. The delegation arrived in Germany after concluding their visit to Belgium to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism. (ANI)
