Bombs hurled at cops as Ganjam village fest turns violent
Berhampur: A peaceful evening meant to mark the beginning of the revered 'Jogamma Yatra' took a violent turn on Sunday night at the tranquil village of Pati Sunapur under Marine police station limits. What began as a gathering of villagers soon spiralled into a violent confrontation with the police, leaving six officers injured and multiple government vehicles damaged.
In a dramatic standoff that unfolded around 9 pm, nearly 100 to 150 villagers, both men and women, armed with weapons and petrol bombs, barricaded the main village road at Pati Sunapur Square. Their motive was to halt the ongoing yatra in protest. According to sources, while one group of villagers was in favour of Jogamma Yatra in the village from Sunday, another wanted to defer it to the last week of this month.
Despite the prompt arrival of Marine police station personnel and Executive Magistrate-cum-Tehsildar of Chikiti, the protesters remained defiant. What ensued was a tense dialogue that quickly gave way to hostility. The mob, allegedly led by 22 individuals, including 18 women and 4 men, resorted to hurling stones and incendiary bombs at police personnel, endangering lives and disrupting public order.
The sudden eruption of violence left a trail of shattered glass, scorched jute threads and gunpowder-scented debris, grim remnants of the confrontation. Authorities swiftly acted, arresting all 22 accused individuals from the village.
Those arrested were P Kamamma (55), B Debaki (40), B Sunita (40), Ch Hema (40), Ch Gureya, B Parbati (40) G Tulasamma (35), B Nolama (40), B Sitamma (40), G Jogamma (50), L Tulasamma (40), D Parbati (50), B Saraswati (45), W Mutalayaama (40), B Kamudu (45), B Ramlu (35), P Dhana Laxmi (45), R Kumari (40), B Sakuntala (45), K Krishna Rao (32), G Tateya (25), L Gopal (24) and P Koteshu (34) all belonging to Pati Sunapur village.
The accused face charges under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Explosive Substances Act, and Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act. They were produced before the court on Monday.
This eruption of violence during a sacred community observance has cast a shadow over the Jogamma Yatra. As the village grapples with the aftermath, law enforcement remains on high alert to prevent further escalation.

37-year-old man dies in car-truck collision in Wagholi
A 37-year-old man lost his life after his car collided with a truck in the Wagholi area on Saturday. The incident took place at around 4 am at Gade Wasti Chowk when the car, driven by the victim, crashed into a truck that allegedly took a sudden turn without warning. The deceased has been identified as Yuvraj Patil, a resident of Dudulgaon Alandi. Preliminary investigation suggests that the truck driver made an abrupt turn, leaving the car driver with no time to react. Appropriate legal action will be taken after reviewing CCTV footage and eyewitness statements,' said a police officer. Based on the complaint filed by the brother of the deceased Aniruddha Patil, an FIR has been filed against the unknown truck driver under sections 281,106(1) of the BNS and sections 184,132(1),134 of the MVA.

Cops attacked in bid to rescue wedding procession vehicle in Azamgarh, 17 arrested
Varanasi: At least five police personnel were injured and their vehicle was damaged when they reached Barra village under Bardah police station in Azamgarh district on Friday night to resolve a dispute involving a wedding procession. Regarding the incident, Azamgarh SP Hemraj Meena said that Bardah police station in-charge Rajiv Kumar Singh suffered serious head injuries while four other police personnel were also injured as the villagers resorted to brickbatting when the police attempted to retrieve the vehicle being held by the locals. A police public response vehicle (PRV) was also damaged in the attack. The station officer was admitted to a hospital while a named FIR against 34 natives of Barra village was lodged under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita(BNS), 7 CL Act, and the Prevention of Damages to Public Property Act. By Saturday night, police arrested 17 accused, including Phool Chand, Sarvesh, Lucky, Gautam, Akash, Sinku, Vipin, Chandresh, Ritik, Rakesh, Vishal, Manoj, Sharmila, Shivmurat, Sangam, Manku, and Rishabh from Barra. Teams were carrying out raids to nab other 17 accused, said the SP. The incident started when some locals intercepted a wedding procession passing through Barra village and held an SUV hostage over objections to the loud volume of DJ music. When the public response vehicle of police arrived and the cops attempted to pacify the crowd, tensions escalated. The villagers turned violent and started hurling bricks at the officers. Additional police forces were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, and senior officers also reached the site. Ludhiana: Groom's dad attacked over inter-caste marriage tiff
A man was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted in Ludhiana by the family members of a woman who had recently married against her their wish. The incident happened in Gill Colony, Daba, on Saturday night. The victim, Jayant Kumar, was reportedly taken from his home by the woman's angry relatives after his son, Sooraj Kumar, married Mandeep Kaur through court on June 3. The couple had gone into hiding after their marriage. Sooraj's mother, Sarita Devi, said her son worked in a private company and was in a relationship with Mandeep, his colleague. Despite opposition from Mandeep's family, they got married and went to live together at an unknown location. Sarita said that on June 7, Mandeep's brothers — Vikramjit, Jaswinder, and Narinder Singh — along with their uncle Manjeet Singh and an associate named Kaushal, came to their house and demanded to know the couple's location. When the family said they didn't know, the group forcefully took Jayant Kumar with them. 'They kidnapped my husband and left. I saw Kaushal, my son's friend, helping them. I called the police right away,' said Sarita. She added that after the police contacted the accused, they sent her husband back in an auto-rickshaw. He had been badly beaten. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurwinder Singh from Daba police station said an FIR has been registered under Sections 140(3) (kidnapping) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused, who are all from the Sahnewal area. He said arrests would be made soon. 'The medical report of Jayant Kumar is awaited. More charges could be added based on the report,' he said. Similar incident in May Earlier, on May 17, a woman was abducted from her home in Ghalib Kalan village by the enraged family members of a girl who had allegedly eloped with the woman's nephew. The Jagraon Sadar police rescued the woman within hours and arrested four persons involved in the crime within hours. The victim, Kirna Devi, aunt of migrant labourer Jai Kumar, was forcibly taken from her home around 11pm by four members of the aggrieved family. Jai Kumar, a native of Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh and currently working at a farmhouse in Ghalib Kalan, had reportedly eloped with a girl from the Jhansi-based family, promising to marry her. A case in connection with the elopement had already been registered against him at a police station in Jhansi.
