Kusal Mendis had a debut to forget in the IPL as he dropped two big chances to dismiss Rohit Sharma early into his innings.
It was definitely not a debut to remember for the Sri Lankan international, Kusal Mendis, who was asked to replace the in-form English keeper, Jos Buttler, for the playoff stages of the Indian Premier League 2025 edition. In the first eliminator clash against the Gujarat Titans at the Mullanpur Stadium in Mohali, Mendis made two big mistakes, which could prove to be costly for the franchise.
Mendis was roped in as Jos Buttler's replacement after the latter had to leave due to England's upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies at home. In turn, the Sri Lankan was roped in for Rs 75 Lakh.
He had a debut to forget in the IPL as he dropped two big chances to dismiss Rohit Sharma early into his innings. These drops proved to be costly as an Indian veteran went on to score 81 runs off 50 deliveries to push Mumbai Indians over the 200-run mark.
Rohit was dropped twice during the powerplay, allowing the veteran to capitalize on the opposition's fielding errors. First, Gerald Coetzee dropped him in the deep, and then Kusal Mendis, on his GT debut, mishandled a straightforward catch behind the stumps off Mohammed Siraj. It was Bairstow (47 off 22) who provided the Mumbai Indians with momentum in the powerplay through some superb hitting.
The out-of-favor England batter, who joined the Mumbai Indians shortly after scoring consecutive fifties in county cricket for Yorkshire, took his chances early and was well rewarded. He targeted the Titans' best pacer of the season, Prasidh Krishna, smashing him for 26 runs in the fourth over, including three sixes. The first six was a pull shot that cleared the square leg fence effortlessly, followed by a clean hit down the ground.
Rohit also joined the action when spinner Sai Kishore was introduced during the powerplay. The former MI captain executed the sweep shot perfectly, collecting two fours and a massive six, bringing his team to 79 for no loss in six overs, their best powerplay of the season.
The top order's confidence rubbed off on Tilak Varma (25 off 11), who has had an off-season by his standards. He hit three sixes in quick succession before falling to Siraj.

Shoaib Akhtar gets legal notice from broadcaster
Islamabad, May 31 (UNI) Veteran sports broadcaster and former PTV Sports anchor Dr Nauman Niaz has served a legal notice to former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, alleging a sustained "malicious defamation campaign" over a period of three years, conducted via television channels and digital media platforms. In a post on social media platform X, Dr Niaz stated that the campaign against him had been "one-sided" and included repeated personal attacks and "derogatory remarks contrary to reality." He specifically cited Episode 31 of Dug Out, streamed on the Tamasha app on May 25, as a recent example, where Akhtar allegedly made fresh defamatory statements. "Eventually, the silence could no longer be mistaken for acquiescence," Dr Niaz posted. "On the advice of counsel, a line has now been drawn formally, firmly. A legal notice has been issued to Mr Shoaib Akhtar." The notice was served on May 29, by Advocate Qazi Umair Ali on behalf of Dr Niaz. The defamation claim centres around remarks made by Akhtar in which he allegedly described Dr Niaz as a kit man who carried players' bags during his tenure with the national team, an assertion Dr Niaz has labelled as false, derogatory, and damaging to his reputation. The legal notice demands an unconditional public apology and a formal retraction of the remarks made. The notice also sets a deadline of 14 days for compliance, failing which defamation proceedings will be initiated under Pakistan's Defamation Ordinance 2002, including a claim for Rs 1 billion in damages. Dr Niaz has emphasised that he has held significant administrative roles within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and has contributed extensively to the field of sports journalism over the years. He contends that Akhtar's remarks are part of a broader pattern of targeted attacks intended to undermine his professional standing. This is not the first time the two public figures have clashed. In October 2021, a widely publicised incident during a live broadcast on PTV Sports saw Dr Niaz asking Akhtar to leave the studio mid-show following an on-air disagreement. The episode sparked national debate and led to both figures being taken off-air temporarily pending an inquiry. The double Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) title holder is the first player to be auctioned for over Rs two crore three times in PKL history, as per a statement from PKL. The other leading player to breach the Rs 2-crore mark was the Best Raider of PKL 11, Devank Dalal. Having led the Patna Pirates line during their final appearance in the previous season, Devank was ultimately purchased by Bengal Warriorz for 2.205 crores, becoming the fifth-most valuable player in the PKL Player Auction.
