Shannon Matthews detective reveals 'remorseless' Karen's chilling request days after arrest

Daily Mirror17 hours ago
EXCLUSIVE: One of the main investigators in the Shannon Matthews case has revealed the chilling words Karen Matthews said to him just days after her arrest
Hero retired Detective Constable Nick Townsend, one of the main investigators in the Shannon Matthews case, has revealed her mother Karen Matthews' startling words to him just days after her arrest.

Nine-year-old Shannon Matthews was reported missing on 19 February 2008, sparking a huge police investigation and community search in Dewsbury's Moorside Estate in West Yorkshire for almost a month.

Three weeks into the investigation, Nick received a tip off which became a break through moment. He raced to the home of Michael Donovan in Lidgate Gardens, where himself and his colleague Paul Kettlewell discovered Shannon hiding under a bed with her captor. It comes as Shannon Matthews' mum Karen's life in prison is revealed.

It later transpired that Karen Matthews had plotted the entire thing with Michael, who was the uncle of her former partner Craig Meehan. It later transpired that Karen had planned the kidnapping with Donovan to make money from the publicity.
In new Amazon Prime documentary, The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, a number of people revealed they had picked up on "strange behaviours". During the documentary Journalist Richard Edwards recalled Karen"tickling him" when her daughter was still missing.
It appears her 'strange behaviours' didn't stop after Karen was exposed for her wrongdoings. Detective Constable Nick Townsend recalled one startling comment she made days after her arrest, which showed she had "no remorse" for what she had done.
Asked on whether Karen ever showed any remorse, Nick told the Mirror: "No, she didn't show any remorse whatsoever."
Just days after her arrest, Nick recalled taking Karen back to New Hall Prison at Flockton after a series of interviews. He revealed Karen barely said anything during the journey, but the words she did say still stay with him to this day.

"The only thing that she said during the whole journey was, can you get me back before 6 o'clock?," Nick recalled. He then asked Karen why she was in such a rush to get to the prison, and her response left him in shock.
"She said, 'Well it's chilli con carne tonight, that's my favourite'," Nick told us. He then continued: "She never once asked about her daughter, she showed no remorse. It was all about her, and that's quite a startling thing to say really. She didn't question about how Shannon was."

Karen and Michael were later sentenced to eight years in jail, but were released after four.
At the end of the documentary, we see Nick in tears as he reflected on the investigation. "I'm proud of being part of a team that was highly professional in the way that we conducted that investigation. I'm proud of the outcome.
"The thought of what would've happened had we not have pursued that line on enquiry on that particular morning.... We were heroes for a day but we'd have been chumps for eternity if we'd have walked away."

Expanding further, Nick told us that the case was one of the most emotional in his long serving career as a police officer. "It was the most emotional I've ever felt on an enquiry," he said. "At that moment in particular, when we discovered Shannon in the flat.
"There have been other emotional times with detective crime, but that one took so much out of everybody."
Nick, who said he could only describe the feeling of finding Shannon as "jubilant," said the new Amazon Prime documentary is more "in depth" than the others he's done.
"I hope it's also come across in the documentary how much the community on Dewsbury Moor pulled together, and how amazing they really were. I hope the amount of effort from all parties has come across."

N-Dubz star Tulisa Contostavlos opens up on suicide attempts and sex tape leak

The X-Factor and I'm A Celebrity star has opened up about her struggles with addiction and two attempts to take her own life in her new book. One of the most harrowing chapters in Tulisa Contostavlos's life unfolded in June 2013. ‌ It was a Friday evening when she discovered she was being charged with suspected involvement in supplying Class A drugs. ‌ The N-Dubz sensation had been ensnared by a sting operation orchestrated by undercover journalist Mazher Mahmood - known as the Fake Sheikh - concerning cocaine supply allegations. ‌ The drugs case ultimately crumbled when the reporter was exposed for lying in his testimony - yet the trauma of the experience left Tulisa shattered, reports the Mirror. According to Tulisa, it became her "year from hell" and drove her to two suicide attempts. Her heartfelt new memoir, Judgement: Love, Trials, and Tribulations, begins with Tulisa intoxicated on her bathroom floor after learning at 11pm on a Friday that she faced charges for being concerned in supplying Class A drugs. She's clutching a fistful of tablets, she's unsure what they are; she attempts to Google them but has no mobile signal. Regardless, she prays they will end her life. She consumes them in pairs. ‌ She writes: "I can't do this anymore, I thought, not another six months of this. I just about got through the first six, but I'm not built for this. "Why is this happening to me? What's the point in being alive just to be miserable? How am I ever going to find happiness after this? "Even if I'm found innocent, I'll be empty inside by the time I get to the end of it, and my life will be ruined." ‌ It was her former best mate and PA, Gareth Varey, who discovered her unconscious on the floor, surrounded by empty packets of sleeping pills. Paramedics arrived and insisted they needed to take her to hospital for a check-up, but Tulisa refused. Instead, the medical team stayed until they deemed it safe to leave, instructing her loved ones to keep a close eye on her. ‌ But that night in June wasn't the only time Tulisa made heartbreaking attempts to end her life. A second incident occurred shortly after, between her trial - which ultimately fell apart - and Mahmood's trial for tampering with her evidence. This attempt, she says, was 'more definitive'. "I felt empty inside as if all the joy had been sucked out of me and would never return. So I took a cocktail of sleeping tablets in a bid to never wake up." ‌ Fortunately, she had sent a series of odd messages to friends, and best friend Cat immediately sensed something was amiss and managed to get her to unlock the front door, just before she lost consciousness. "She later said when she found me that she thought I was already dead as I was seemingly blue from head to toe – she could see veins running up my neck and through my face – so she rang for an ambulance. ‌ "Cat told me a few years later when I finally asked, and how the ambulance crew were desperately trying to keep me alive and how Cat thought I was going to die. I was in hospital for three days and when I finally came around the first thing I said was, 'Why the f**k am I still here? !' That moment I did remember." In other parts of the book, Tulisa candidly discusses her chaotic upbringing in a home plagued by her mother's schizoaffective disorder and domestic violence. Throughout the memoir - which chronicles the ordeal of her drugs charges and the trial's collapse - she frequently retreats to the bathroom, poignantly describing it as her sole sanctuary. ‌ She reveals she spent five nights sleeping on the bathroom floor after her intimate video with former partner Justin Edwards was made public in 2012. "When I was a child, the bathroom was the only room in my house with a lock. I had always locked myself in there in times of distress, whether it was because my parents were going at it like two bulls in a china shop again, or my mentally ill mother was going off the rails. ‌ "It had always been my place of safety. And twenty years later, here I was: back lying on the bathroom floor. Deeprooted issues, I suppose. When the sex tape had come out, I had slept on the bathroom floor for five days." Tulisa also reveals her struggle with mental health issues and her reliance on sleep medication and benzodiazepines, which she finally overcame in 2024 after she 'found her peace and faith'. ‌ She speaks openly in the book about her intimate life and romantic relationships, including her connections with former footballer Danny Simpson, an ex called Adam, Jack O'Connell, and with an older gentleman named Jacob, who she has had an "almost ten-year journey with that still in a way continues to this day". Describing him as 'no angel', and their romance as 'rocky', she says their 'drama' has prevented them from settling down together. Discussing her three and-a-half-year period of celibacy following her break up from Miles, she clarifies that rather than being extreme, she consistently preferred to wait until a relationship was exclusive to become intimate. ‌ Fast-forward to today, and Tulisa reveals she is pushing herself to date once more in pursuit of a fresh beginning. However, it's not a process she relishes, confessing she is frightened to settle down. Indeed, she has since frozen her eggs to allow herself more time to heal from her 'deep scars' and to discover someone she wants to 'heal and grow with'. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! She now relishes a peaceful existence in Cheshire, where she can remain close to her 'soul family', and concentrate on her wellbeing, spiritualism and wellness. For the past year, she has been residing in her dream home, which she spent six months renovating, in a tranquil rural area in the middle of nowhere. ‌ Meanwhile, Tulisa discloses how she sabotaged her opportunity to return for another X Factor series because she was so preoccupied pursuing the Fake Sheikh's bogus film offer, and discusses her choice to retreat from public life following her stint on I'm A Celebrity, confessing she felt completely overwhelmed after her time away from the limelight. She also recalls in disturbing detail the terrifying encounter with an unknown man in a secluded park whilst alone, calling it "every woman's worst nightmare". "He was grinning at me evilly, showing his teeth. He stayed crouched and still, watching me with his evil eyes glistening through the shadows. I was frozen in shock and fear, when all of a sudden he made a loud sound. 'Hssssssssssss,' he hissed like a snake." It was only Jacob's arrival behind her that frightened the man away.

Death row killer gouged out own eyes and ate them after killing wife and kids

Andre Thomas was sentenced to death in 2005 for the murder of his wife Laura Christine Boren, his four-year-old son and Boren's 13-month-old daughter in Texas A man sentenced to death for the horrific murder of his wife and children, in which he removed their hearts, gouged out his own eyes and ate them in a desperate bid to avoid execution. ‌ Andre Thomas was handed the death sentence in 2005, but his execution was delayed after he gruesomely removed his own eyes. He was discovered in his cell, drenched in blood, prior to his court appearance in 2004, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. ‌ In another shocking incident, the man gouged out his remaining eye and swallowed it, leaving him completely blind. His legal team stated that he believed this act of self-mutilation would prevent the government from hearing his thoughts. ‌ The 39-year-old is currently incarcerated in Texas for a triple murder he confessed to committing. He admitted to killing his estranged wife, Laura Christine Boren, their four year old son, and Boren's 13-month-old daughter. He informed police he believed God had instructed him to carry out the murders, thinking the three victims were demons. Thomas also removed the hearts of both children, as reported by the Associated Press, reports the Mirror. He was found guilty in 2005 and automatically received the death penalty. His execution was scheduled for April 5, 2023. An agency spokesperson, Jason Clark, said: "Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it." In March 2023, Judge Jim Fallon issued an order to withdraw the execution warrant for Thomas. This decision came after his legal team requested more time to assess his mental state and determine if he met the competency criteria for the death penalty. ‌ The Supreme Court has stated while the death penalty is not illegal for those with severe mental illnesses, the individual must be competent. Marie Levin, Thomas' lawyer, said in a statement: "We are confident that when we present the evidence of Mr. Thomas's incompetence, the court will agree that executing him would violate the Constitution. ‌ "Guiding this blind psychotic man to the gurney for execution offends our sense of humanity and serves no legitimate purpose." Levin described Thomas as "one of the most mentally ill prisoners in Texas history ... not competent to be executed, lacking a rational understanding of the state's reason for his execution." After consuming his first eyeball, Thomas received treatment at a medical centre before being moved to a prison psychiatric ward. ‌ His trial lawyer, Bobbie Peterson-Cate, expressed relief that Thomas would "finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1." In March 2023, over 100 faith leaders and others issued a plea for mercy to halt his execution. However, J. Kerye Ashmore from the Grayson County District Attorney's Office, who prosecuted the case, claimed they knew "nothing about the case" and had not reviewed any reports or assessments concerning his mental condition. Thomas continues to be on death row.

Theme park ride 'derails' injuring 13 kids as thrillseekers left 'bloodied'

Witness Kieran Roche said the incident caused several injuries. A pleasure park ride has reportedly derailed leaving 13 children injured and thrillseekers "covered in blood." ‌ Police have asked members of the public to avoid a Coney Beach Pleasure Park in Wales following a reported ride derailment. ‌ South Wales Police have confirmed 13 children and one adult were left injured following the funfair incident at roughly 5.50pm on Wednesday. ‌ It is believed some of those involved in the incident were children, with guests later seen climbing off the Wacky Worm ride - while others were helped down with a ladder. The funfair said they were instructed by police to clear the site around the third-party ride, not owned by Coney Beach, for further investigation, reports the Mirror. The park said: "Due to an incident on a third-party ride not owned by Coney Beach, we were instructed by the police to clear the site for further investigation. "We apologise for the disruption and will be providing refunds to affected guests as soon as possible. We will be releasing instructions on refunds shortly. We thank you for your cooperation." Witness Kieran Roche said the incident caused several injuries, including bloody noses. Others said the ride derailed at approximately 5.50pm, before park owners quickly helped people off the ride, with ladders brought out for those who couldn't reach the ground on their own. Police and fire crews have been on the scene since the witness first reported the incident at 6.15pm. The park has closed and a cordon is in place while authorities work to manage the situation. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
