What should FD investors do now as interest rates to fall further with RBI cutting repo rate again by 50 bps

Time of India15 hours ago

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cut the repo rate for the third time by XXXX basis points. With the latest cut, the repo rate now stands at XXXXX. The cut in the repo rate brings cheers for borrowers but bad news for fixed deposit investors. The banks have been cutting the
FD interest rate
as the RBI started reducing the repo rate at the start of 2025.
How FD rate has been impacted since February 2025
The RBI has cut the repo rate by 25 bps each time in February and April 2025. Due to two successive rate cuts, banks have aggressively reduced FD interest rates.

According to the SBI Research report, "FD rates have been reduced in the range of 30-70 bps since February 2025."
Along with the reduction in fixed deposit interest rates, banks are also reducing the interest rates on savings bank accounts. "Banks have already reduced interest rates on savings accounts to floor rate of 2.70%," said SBI in its report.

How much FD rate cuts investors should expect in future?
The RBI has cut the repo rate three times till now. According to the SBI research report, "Transmission to deposit rates is expected to be strong in the coming quarters. 100 bps repo rate cuts are expected in FY26."
This is likely to happen if the CPI inflation remains below the medium-term target of 4%, supporting growth in fighting cyclical downturns, and if credit growth remains muted.
What should be investment strategy as FD interest rates fall?
There are very limited options available to
FD investors
when the interest rates are falling in the economy. Here are the steps which they should take to minimise the loss and make the maximum advantage of the current situation.
Book FDs at current high rates
The interest rates on fixed deposits are expected to fall in the upcoming months, however, it may take some time before it actually happens. There are many banks which are still offering FDs at attractive rates. Therefore, it is essential for FD investors to book FDs at current higher rates as soon as possible.
Certain banks are still offering interest rates of 8% or higher for longer-term fixed deposits. However, as most of the highest interest rates currently available on FDs are being offered by Small Finance Banks so you should check the safety of your principal amount. If you book your FDs with any bank which is considered risky it will be better to book your FD in such a way that it is covered under Rs 5 lakh deposit insurance cover. Many major banks are currently offering interest rates of 7% or higher for longer-term fixed deposits.
Going for medium to long term FD can be beneficial
As interest rate cycle has reversed from rising interest rates to falling interest rates, it may take a while for the interest rate cycle to reach its bottom and make a turn around. While short term FDs will see quick reduction in interest rate, it may take a while for interest rate on medium to long term FDs to fall. Therefore, if you do not have any short-term need, a strategy of locking FDs for medium to long term can be beneficial.
Count on laddering to save from lowest yield
Senior citizens can still count on the laddering strategy to manage their fixed deposits (FDs) in terms of liquidity, returns, and interest rate fluctuations in the future.
FD laddering strategy allows senior citizens to break the investible surplus into different tenures. As the FDs are divided into many parts and different FDs mature regularly, it saves the depositors from the eventuality of renewal risk when interest rates are low. Only a part of the FD corpus will get renewed at lower rate while rest of the FDs will still keep enjoying a higher interest rate. With time the interest rate cycle may turn again. As the FD matures, the proceeds can be used to reinvest at the prevailing rates or utilised as needed. Thus, the depositors can expect to keep getting above-average returns from the laddering strategy.

Kashmir to Kanyakumari no longer just a slogan: LG Sinha

JAMMU: J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha lavished praise on PM Narendra Modi Friday for making the 'Kashmir-to-Kanyakumari slogan' a reality and carrying forward what he said was 'a socio-economic revolution in J&K' since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. 'He has connected the hearts of millions of Indians, forging an unbreakable bond from north to south,' Sinha said in Katra after PM Modi inaugurated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link and flagged off the Valley's first Vande Bharat Express service. The LG said the world's tallest railway bridge, built over the Chenab, and Anji rail bridge were representative of this progress. 'The skills of our engineers to build the Chenab and Anji bridges, and the toil of our workers who carved a rail route through the mountains have eliminated the gaps that existed between India's crown jewel and the rest of the country.' Sinha pointed out that since April 2022, the PM had commissioned or inaugurated Rs 1.15 lakh crore worth of projects for J&K.

Relief for parents as notebooks cost less after raw paper prices fall

Pune: Parents across Pune are breathing easier this school season after a noticeable drop in the prices of notebooks and school stationery. The academic year will begin in 10 days for most govt and private schools and the markets are bustling. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The price reduction is largely due to a steep fall—around 40 to 50%—in the cost of raw paper imported from abroad. This led to a 15 to 20% drop in the prices of notebooks, registers, and other paper-based school materials. Retailers confirmed that notebooks which cost ₹400–₹450 per dozen last year are now available for ₹300. A4-size notebooks, earlier priced at ₹600 per dozen, are now being sold at ₹450–₹480. Drawing books, which were ₹42, are now ₹32 per book. However, prices for felt pens and whiteners remained unchanged. "Prices have come down by at least 10-15%," Rajiv Chandak of Trimurti Traders said. "Medium-quality A4 notebooks that sold for ₹540 are now ₹450. We've revised our cash memos to reflect the new rates." Sachin Gaikwad of ABC Stationers added, "Last year, A4 notebooks were priced between ₹700 and ₹800 depending on the brand. This year, they are available for as low as ₹300. It's a 5–8% dip across various formats." Nikhil Shah of Bombay Book Manufacturing Company said, "Paper rates have stabilised. Last year, during the peak season, prices shot up. This year, the same A4 notebook from a top brand like Classmate, which cost Rs 75, is available for Rs 65." Kothrud resident Suhas Kulkarni said, "We have two school-going children, so every rupee matters. Compared to the last year, our stationery bill is down by nearly 20%. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It's a big relief. We could buy everything—bags, notebooks, lunch boxes—within our budget." Kondhwa resident Vaishali Kedari said, "Usually, we spend a lot on notebooks and registers. But this year, the prices are really reasonable. We didn't have to cut corners and were able to buy everything our daughter needed without stress." With school reopening just a week away, shopkeepers expect more crowds during this weekend and over the next week. For now, the price correction is happy news.

HC bench orders UP govt not to demolish any madrassa in Shravasti

Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has ordered that the Uttar Pradesh authorities would not take any coercive action against more than two dozen madrassas of Shravasti district. It also cautioned the state that it would not demolish any madrassas which have approached the court. The bench asked the state government to file its reply against the writ petitions till July 3. A bench of Justice Jaspreet Singh passed the order on the petitions moved by Madarssa Moinul Islam Qasmiya Samiti and 26 other madrassas individually in Shravasti. In April, the UP had govt launched a major drive against illegal encroachments in districts near the India-Nepal border, Bahraich, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, and Balrampur, demolishing hundreds of unauthorised structures, including unrecognised religious institutions. Illegal constructions were demolished in Shravasti and Bahraich, while in Siddharthnagar, 12 illegal structures were identified and notices issued. In Lakhimpur Kheri, a day-long survey found no illegal encroachments. These actions target long-standing illegal occupations of valuable border land, which the Yogi govt is determined to reclaim, the UP govt order said. In his order on Friday, Justice Singh observed, "It is now equally well settled that where any notice in the nature of a show cause is issued, it must be issued with sufficient particularity so that the noticee can respond specifically and can know what charge is to be replied." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The bench had already passed a similar order allowing a petition filed in connection with another such madrassa, Maktab Anwarul Uloom, Shravasti, on May 14. The state had issued notices to the petitioners restraining them from imparting religious education in these madrassas.
