Child injured in electric shock at Dataran Drawbridge, Kuala Terengganu council re-insulates cables, launches safety checks
Kuala Terengganu Mayor Datuk Jusman Ibrahim said the action was taken following an incident where a child was hospitalised for burns from an electric shock that jolted him while he was walking with his family in the area.
He said the council received a complaint at 11.18 pm yesterday and a technical team from the MBKT electrical department was dispatched to inspect the cause of the incident this morning.
'The investigation found the cause of the incident to be due to a damaged electrical cable that came into contact with an MBKT street lamp post.
'Immediate action was taken by MBKT by inspecting all cables, then re-insulating them using the 'heat shrink insulation' method,' he said in a statement today.
Jusman said to prevent the same incident from recurring, MBKT would also conduct a comprehensive inspection in phases at Dataran Drawbridge and surrounding areas, which is a popular tourist attraction.
According to him, they also view every complaint received through various media seriously because it involves public safety issues.
MBKT expressed hope that the child will undergo a full recovery and, at the same time, reminded the public that any act of vandalism is a crime that not only damages public property but could also endanger the safety of others.

Police tighten security for Rafizi's family after syringe attack on son
SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — Police have tightened security measures for Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and his family following the attack on his son at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. In a statement yesterday, Rafizi confirmed the victim was his son and that during the incident, two male suspects on a motorcycle, dressed in black and wearing helmets had tailed his wife's car. MACC: Five senior military officers accused of leaking intel to RM5m-a-month smuggling ring, among 10 remanded
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 — The Magistrate's Court today issued remand orders against 10 individuals, including five senior Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) officers, to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation into a smuggling syndicate operating in the country's south. The MACC said the others remanded comprise two journalists from an online media agency, a company manager, an administrative assistant at the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and a foreign woman. 'Four male suspects have been remanded for seven days until Aug 20, two men and one woman for two days until Aug 18, while two men and one Indonesian woman are remanded for three days until Aug 15,' it said in a statement today. The remand orders were issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin. According to sources, the five senior military officers and five civilians, aged between 30 and 55, were arrested around the Klang Valley yesterday in 'Op Sohor', carried out by MACC's Intelligence Division with the cooperation of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). The military intelligence officers are suspected of colluding with the syndicate by leaking operational information to help them evade enforcement. The smuggled goods allegedly brought into the country include drugs, cigarettes and other items from neighbouring countries, with an estimated value of about RM5 million a month. The raids followed about 12 months of intelligence gathering, and the suspects are believed to have received between RM30,000 and RM50,000 in bribes for each smuggling trip conducted. The network involving the officers is believed to be large and complex. In the Wednesday operation, MACC also seized over RM63,000 in cash, several packages suspected to contain drugs, weighing and measuring equipment, liquor and imitation firearms found at the raided premises. Meanwhile, MACC Intelligence Division Senior Director Datuk Saiful Ezral Arifin said the suspects are being investigated for corruption and money laundering offences. — Bernama

Chinese national arrested after allegedly assaulting KLIA immigration officer in scuffle over missing entry records
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 — A Chinese national was arrested after allegedly acting aggressively and injuring an Immigration counter officer during a departure inspection at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 yesterday. In the 7.40 pm incident, the woman, who was with a man and two children, approached the counter for immigration departure inspection when the officer on duty found that they had no records of entry into Malaysia, and referred the matter to the supervisor for further checks. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the suspect was dissatisfied when told to let other passengers through while the checks were being done, before hurling abuse at the officer, pulling her headscarf and pushing her head towards a pillar in front of the counter. 'A brief scuffle ensued, and the suspect refused to calm down even when instructed. AKPS enforcement officers then called in the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team to diffuse the situation,' the AKPS said in a statement today. Following the incident, the officer sustained swelling around her left eye, a headache on the right side of her head and body aches and was referred to Cyberjaya Hospital. A police report was made, and the suspect is under police custody for investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their public functions, Section 332 for injuring a public servant and Section 353 for using criminal force to deter a public servant from performing their duty. — Bernama
