Natural health: How can I heal a stubborn bruise on my face?

Irish Examiner25-07-2025
I tripped on an uneven path about three months ago and cut the side of my face.
While the scars have healed and the pain has gone, the bruising on my cheekbone is still there, though a little lighter.
Is there a cream or remedy I could use to help it fade?
I'm glad to hear that the scars have healed well and you are no longer in pain. Bruising can take some time to heal, particularly when the tissue trauma is quite deep.
Two of my favourite remedies to support deep tissue trauma are Arnica montana and Bellis perennis in their homoeopathic form.
Traumeel is a product that combines the healing benefits of these two remedies with other supportive homeopathics for bruising, wound healing, and trauma.
The product is available as oral drops (30ml) as well as a topical cream (50g) with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Both can be purchased online or in health stores, costing €15.95 each.
If you are looking for herbal topical preparations rather than homoeopathic formulations, then try arnica balm or cream for bruising, but keep in mind that it should not be applied to broken skin.
For future reference, here are some beneficial herbal remedies to have on hand for injuries, bumps, and scrapes: St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is very effective in wound healing and to prevent infection, calendula (Calendula officinalis) soothes and heals, and comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is well known for repairing bone and tissue when applied as a balm, cream, or poultice to sprains, strains, and fractures.
One other, more unusual, topical treatment for persistent bruising is to apply a haemorrhoid or varicose vein preparation. Venaforce by A Vogel is an excellent option to help bruising dissipate more rapidly when it is slow to clear.
The skin on the soles of my feet is heavily calloused in places. I've tried filing it down, but it always grows back.
Wearing sandals during the summer doesn't help as the air exposure seems to toughen the calluses. What would you recommend?
Since the calluses continue to grow back, it is worth examining the type of shoes you wear and possibly getting your walking gait assessed to determine if this is contributing to the issue.
A podiatrist will not only help with a gait assessment, but can also help to remove the calluses and advise on ways in which you can maintain your feet at home more easily.
Many podiatrists recommend using a chiropody sponge. While the name 'sponge' is somewhat misleading (they are indeed porous, but very hard), these are often far more effective than a file device or pumice stone.
The 'sponge' is designed to be used together with soap — simply wet the sponge and then rub soap on one side of it, and use it as you would a file or pumice stone on the calloused areas.
You can use it daily as part of your shower routine to gently scrub the soles of your feet and make them a little softer.
However, the real results occur when you give your feet a good, long soak first. Try using a footbath of warm water to which a cup of apple cider vinegar has been added, to help the hardened skin soften and shed more easily.
Soak your feet in this solution for at least 30 minutes (or up to an hour) every night, if possible, then use the chiropody sponge. If the smell of vinegar puts you off, then stick to plain warm water.
You may also want to consider using a balm or salve nightly to help soften and heal your feet.
Wear a pair of cotton socks over the freshly soaked and prepared feet and leave the balm on overnight.

AFL world reacts as key figure set to follow Simon Goodwin out the door at Melbourne

The shake-up at the Melbourne Demons continues in the wake of Simon Goodwin's sacking as coach, with head of development Mark 'Choco' Williams also set to depart in a move that has sparked reaction around the AFL world. Williams is a highly regarded figure in the footy world and previously coached Port Adelaide from 1999 to 2010, where he helped the club claim the 2004 premiership. But the 66-year-old has been told by Melbourne's board that his services will no longer be required after this season, becoming the latest high-profile figure at the Demons to be shown the door. Speaking about the situation on SEN radio on Thursday, club legend Garry Lyon said he believed Williams still had plenty to offer the sport and that a rival club will inevitably come knocking for his services. 'One of the great men in footy, Mark Williams, departing Melbourne after the final game this weekend,' Lyon said. 'He's been there for five years, 2021 premiership, massive say. His impact on that footy club, in my eyes, has been enormous. 'I think it's very clear that he's not finished in footy. He still wants to keep doing it and from my experiences he would be a great man to have at any footy club." Williams joined the Demons at the end of 2020 and is regarded as a key figure behind their drought-breaking premiership success in 2021. Melbourne haven't been able to get close to hitting the same heights in the years since and failed to make the finals for a second-straight season this year. The Demons have also been plagued by off-field dramas in recent seasons, with the sacking of Goodwin and parting of ways of Williams clear evidence the board wants a fresh start for the club. Williams has over 40 years of playing and coaching experience at the top level of footy and helped build several AFL clubs - including Brisbane, Port Adelaide and GWS - from the ground up. He was also Kane Cornes' coach at Port Adelaide when they won the premiership in 2004 and the Power great believes Williams would be an astute addition to any footy department. AFL world reacts as Mark Williams set to depart Melbourne 'He started there and was appointed Melbourne's head of development in December 2020, and did a fine job, the premiership was clearly a highlight there," Cornes told SEN radio about Williams' time at the Demons. 'He's the most impressive football person that I have ever worked with, and I can also tell you that he's desperate to continue. 'He's 66 years of age and still as determined and hungry for success as ever. His phone is on, and he's ready to accept any opportunities in the AFL, and he's still as passionate as he always has been.' Cornes reckons Williams should be one of the key targets for the new Tasmanian team when they enter the AFL in 2028. 'He's the most impressive football person that I've ever seen, the only person to be there from the ground up at three clubs (Brisbane, Port Adelaide and GWS)," Cornes added. 'That's why I think it's a perfect fit at Tassie. No one has the experience with first-up teams like him. 'The passion to help young players and develop them has always been his biggest strength, even when he was a senior coach, that was where his passion lied. They're going to spend at least 12 months before they enter the main competition. So, to be able to develop those players at VFL level as they're playing and the side is developing under a coach, he'd be a great option." RELATED: Pies premiership star 'up for the taking' as rival clubs put on alert AFL grants Crows' request on Izak Rankine as Pies coach speaks Craig McRae's sad confession about Bobby Hill amid AFL absence Cornes also believes a club like Carlton would be a perfect fit for Williams after pointing out the Blues' shortcomings and labelling their skill level this season as 'poor'. Fans from several rival clubs have also taken to social media in numbers to urge their teams to sign the popular footy figure.
