Cal Raleigh to play for U.S. in World Baseball Classic, joining Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes and Bobby Witt Jr.
USA Baseball announced the decision before Raleigh participated in the All-Star Home Run Derby. The 28-year-old entered the All-Star break leading the major leagues with 38 homers and 82 RBIs.
The 20-nation WBC will be played from March 5-17. Japan is defending champion.
The World Baseball Softball Confederation said the baseball tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be played from July 15-20 at Dodger Stadium. MLB is considering whether it can interrupt its 2028 season to allow major leagues to participate.
There will be two groups of three teams during a preliminary round over three days, with two games per day. The group winners advance to the semifinals, while the other teams compete in a pair of quarterfinals. Semifinals will be played July 19, and gold and bronze medal games the next day.
The softball tournament will be played from July 23-29 at OKC Softball Park in Oklahoma City. A five-day round-robin will be played on July 28 followed by the gold medal game the next day.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles reinstated catcher Adley Rutschman from the 10-day injured list Monday and fortified their depleted bullpen by bringing back lefty Keegan Akin from the IL. The return of Akin coincided with the news that closer Félix Bautista will endure an extended stay on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since July 24. 'An MRI (determined) there was a lot of swelling in the shoulder,' interim manger Tony Mansolino said. 'We can't quite make a determination yet, or diagnose it until the swelling goes down. That's going to be probably more weeks than days.' Bautista underwent Tommy John surgery in October of 2023 before returning this season to reclaim his role as the team's closer. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 17 saves for the last-place club. 'It's incredibly disappointing,' Mansolino said of Bautista's latest injury. 'He's an important part of the Baltimore Orioles. A very unfortunate set of circumstances.' The return of Rutschman should improve the team's offense and lift the mood in the clubhouse. Rutschman — the top overall pick in the 2019 draft — was batting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs before going on the IL on June 20 with a left oblique strain. 'It's a big piece. He walked into the room and brought a lot of energy, right away,' Mansolino said. 'Lot of smiles, lot of hugs.' Baltimore cleared roster space for Rutschman and Akin by optioning pitcher Yaramil Hiraldo to Triple-A Norfolk and designating catcher Jacob Stallings for assignment. ___

Yankees RHP Clarke Schmidt aiming to return near 2026 All-Star break following elbow surgery
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Sporting a metal brace on his right arm a little over two weeks after undergoing an internal brace procedure on the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt said he is aiming to return after next season's All-Star break. 'It wasn't a full reconstruction,' Schmidt said before New York opened a four-game series against Tampa Bay on Monday. 'They didn't have to go in and put a new ligament in. Basically, what happened was the ligament was kind of tearing off the bone, so they just reattached it to the bone and they didn't have go to add any ligament. So that was very encouraging on that part.' Schmidt had the surgery performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on July 11 and was told the recovery would take about a year. 'When they say Tommy John, it's kind of like an umbrella term these days but from what I was told and everything that I've been informed of, it's kind of the best case of the Tommy John,' Schmidt said. 'So around a year, like 11 to 12 months, 11 to 13 months, so very encouraged by that. I think if it was full reconstruction, it would be looking at 14, 16 months. So I think we dodged a major bullet with that. 'Obviously it's hard to circle a day now, but a little bit after the All-Star break. I know that I'll definitely be a factor next year. So very encouraged by that.' Schmidt said he first felt soreness when he pitched 5 2/3 innings against the Cleveland Guardians on June 4. He made five starts after that, spanning 29 2/3 innings, and threw 103 pitches in seven hitless innings against the Baltimore Orioles on June 21. The Yankees pushed his next start to June 28 and he exited after three innings July 3 at Toronto because of forearm soreness. Schmidt began the season on the injured list while recovering from right rotator cuff tendinitis. Schmidt was 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 14 starts this season before having the surgery.
