SANDAKAN: Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih advised the public against falling for viral links circulating on messaging apps and social media offering applications for the People's Housing Project. (PPR) He said remaining vigilant is vital to avoid becoming victims of online scams. The public must verify PPR-related information directly with the Ministry, local councils or district offices, he said after officiating the 2025–2027 swearing-in and appointment ceremony for 18 new Beluran District Councillors on Thursday, attended by Assistant Rural Development Minister Datuk Samad Jambri. The new councilors are urged to prioritise community development and council performance. Isnin was proud of the achievements of various district councils, including Beluran, which reported higher revenue than last year. Samad hoped the newly appointed councilors would work hard together. 'Carry out your duties well, especially in helping the community and supporting the development of Beluran,' he said. Earlier, Isnin highlighted the importance of councilors in meeting the needs of the people. He was also proud that the Beluran District Council achieved a 5-Star rating in the Local Authority Star Rating System and the Human Resource Management Information System (SM2) for 2024. The council won a Silver Award in the Landscape Competition at the Sabah Landscape Architecture Awards (SLAA) 2024 and has maintained a Clean Audit Certificate with no remarks for its financial statements from 2008 to 2023.

Klias hardcore poverty initiative bears fruit

Published on: Friday, June 06, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 06, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: BEAUFORT: The government's efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty in Sabah have borne fruit, with the Klias constituency achieving zero hardcore poverty status. Klias Assemblyman Datuk Isnin Aliasnih said this success was the result of the continuous efforts of the State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as part of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda. Advertisement Isnin said E-Kasih data showed there were 168 hardcore poor in Klias in 2023, which decreased to 11 by the end of 2024 and finally reached zero this year. 'This year, it is zero, meaning there are no more hardcore poor in Klias. This shows that the government's various initiatives to address this issue have been effective. 'The government provided extensive assistance to ensure these individuals rose above the poverty line, as we understood their struggles, some earning less than RM250 a month and some even without homes,' 'We provided them with SMJ homes and enrolled them in the Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) programme to boost their economic standing. They have now successfully escaped poverty.' He said this to reporters after officiating the Klias Gagasan Rakyat Annual Delegates Meeting at Dewan Pa' Musa here. Isnin, who is also Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, said five dilapidated schools in the area will be upgraded with an allocation of RM118 million. The schools are SK Mempagar, SK Takuli, SK Rancangan Klias, SK Pintas and SK Kubu. Additionally, a RM35 million allocation has been approved for the construction of the Beaufort District Education Office. 'My voice was heard during the Gagasan Rakyat Annual Assembly debate last year on education issues, leading to this substantial allocation for Klias. 'Not just that, Beaufort is also set to become one of Sabah's industrial hubs with a 5,000-acre area to be developed as an industrial centre. 'Once this project begins, it will impact local development and the economy, especially in Klias. The community must seize this opportunity,' he said. When asked about preparations for the 17th State Election, Isnin, who is also a Gagasan Rakyat Supreme Council Member said the party machinery is fully prepared to defend the Klias seat at any time. 'All party wings, including grassroots machinery, have been instructed to be ready. 'Support from young voters (aged 18 to 30) for the government is very positive, thanks to various direct initiatives such as education aid, SMJ housing assistance and financial aid all of which meet the people's needs at all levels,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? US judge blocks Trump from invalidating 5,000 Venezuelans' legal documents

A federal judge prevented the Trump administration from invalidating work permits and other documents granting lawful status to about 5,000 Venezuelans, a subset of the nearly 350,000 whose temporary legal protections the U.S. Supreme Court last week allowed to be terminated. U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco in a Friday night ruling concluded that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem likely exceeded her authority when she in February invalidated those documents while more broadly ending the temporary protected status granted to the Venezuelans. The U.S. Supreme Court on May 19 lifted an earlier order Chen issued that prevented the administration as part of President Donald Trump's hardline immigration agenda from terminating deportation protection conferred to Venezuelans under the Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, program. But the high court stated specifically it was not preventing any Venezuelans from still challenging Noem's related decision to invalidate documents they were issued pursuant to that program that allowed them to work and live in the United States. Such documents were issued after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during former Democratic President Joe Biden's final days in office extended the TPS program for the Venezuelans by 18 months to October 2026, an action Noem sought to reverse. TPS is available to people whose home country has experienced a natural disaster, armed conflict or other extraordinary event. Lawyers for several Venezuelans and the advocacy group National TPS Alliance asked Chen to recognize the documents' continuing validity, saying without them migrants could lose their jobs or be deported. Chen in siding with them said nothing in the statute authorizing the TPS program allowed Noem to invalidate the documents. Chen, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, noted the administration estimated only about 5,000 of the 350,000 Venezuelans held such documents. 'This smaller number cuts against any contention that the continued presence of these TPS holders who were granted TPS-related documents by the Secretary would be a toll on the national or local economies or a threat to national security,' Chen wrote. Homeland Security Department spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin in a statement said the 'ruling delays justice and seeks to kneecap the president's constitutionally vested powers.' Chen ruled hours after the U.S. Supreme Court in a different case on Friday allowed Trump's administration to end the temporary immigration 'parole' granted to 532,000 Venezuelan, Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan migrants under a different Biden-era program.
