Homi Bhaba university asks state for 10,000-sq-ft space for satellite campus
Mumbai: Dr Homi Bhabha State University (HBSU), Maharashtra's only govt cluster university, is seeking 10,000 square feet of built-up space from the state govt to establish a satellite campus. The university is in talks with the govt to seek the campus in a location that is well-connected by the city's railway network, to make it accessible for students, even from the underprivileged background. HBSU, which currently comprises six prominent colleges, including Sydenham College, the Institute of Science, and the historic Elphinstone College, is planning significant expansion over the next five years. This includes both the introduction of new academic programmes and the development of additional physical infrastructure. Established in 2019 with four constituent colleges, HBSU recently added two more institutions to its cluster. "We are looking at offering varied undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programmes in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cyber security, blockchain technology, quantum computing, robotics, internet of things, among others. The other direction of growth is in the area of climate change, sustainability and green economy. There is a lot of scope towards carbon accounting and green finance and students can make use of the city as a living laboratory to engage with pressing challenges such as waste management," said Rajanish Kamat, vice-chancellor, HBSU, adding the humanities and sciences departments will also start inter-disciplinary programmes in health informatics and digital health. AP to launch smart ration cards on Aug 25
1 2 Visakhapatnam: Civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohar stated that the government has developed a strategy to provide better quality services to the citizens of Andhra Pradesh. As part of this initiative, smart ration cards will be distributed on Aug 25. These cards will be issued to all current ration beneficiaries, as well as to new ones. This initiative aims to implement a transparent system supported by technology, he explained. The government will also promote international marketing for tribal products through the Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) and will launch a digital wallet system as a pilot project in the NTR district. During regional meetings in North Andhra districts, along with civil supplies commissioner Saurabh Gaur, joint collectors and GCC MD Kalpana Kumari, the minister conducted a comprehensive review of the Deepam-2 scheme, rice distribution, illegal transportation of ration rice, weights and measures, food quality, and other related issues. The minister stated that the government had purchased paddy during previous seasons for the benefit of farmers, paying Rs 12,000 crore. Despite financial constraints, the government eliminated Mobile Delivery Units (MDUs), made ration shops more accessible, and is committed to ensuring the supply of quality goods to the public. He emphasised the need to curb illegal transportation of ration rice and to increase surveillance. Civil supplies commissioner Saurabh Gaur provided guidance on various issues, and suggested improved coordination between the legal metrology and food safety departments. The minister also spoke about the identification and prevention of ration rice diversion, strict legal action against violators, and implementing necessary legal reforms. He noted that vigilance checks have been intensified and legal metrology activities expanded. Currently, rations are being distributed to 4 crore people across the state, with 1 crore beneficiaries under the Deepam-2 scheme. Quality goods are being supplied through ration shops for 15 days each month. For the elderly and disabled, home delivery of rations is arranged at the end of the month. Additionally, three free LPG cylinders are being provided annually, and efforts are underway to ensure timely credit of subsidy amounts.
