West Ham's Lucas Paqueta set to be cleared of FA spot-fixing charges

Times25-07-2025
Lucas Paquetá is set to be cleared of charges of spot-fixing in what would be a sensational victory for West Ham United's Brazilian midfielder.
The 27-year-old was facing the threat of a lengthy ban that could have ended his career after being charged by the FA with deliberately getting himself booked in four Premier League matches.
Sources with knowledge of the case have told The Times that the player is understood to have been cleared by an independent regulatory commission, with the decision due to be announced next week.
The FA could be facing the prospect of picking up the costs of Paquetá's legal fees which could be as much as £1million. The FA and West Ham have declined to comment.
Paquetá had always denied any wrongdoing, and said in a statement in May last year: 'I am extremely surprised and upset that the FA has decided to charge me. For nine months, I have cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can.
'I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name. Due to the ongoing process, I will not be providing any further comment.'
The midfielder was charged in May last year by the FA with deliberately getting yellow cards in matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.
The charges resulted in Manchester City pulling out of an expected bid for the player by meeting a £85million release clause in his contract. West Ham are now expected to be in a position where they will have a decision to make about whether to keep the midfielder or sell him to earn a transfer fee.
The original FA charges alleged that Paquetá got himself deliberate yellow cards so that 'one or more persons' could profit financially from betting on him being booked, though there was never any suggestion in the charges that he was benefiting himself financially or had bet on games.
Paquetá, who earns a reported £150,00-a-week, was charged with being deliberately booked against Leicester for a lunge on Boubakary Soumaré, against Aston Villa for a late tackle on John McGinn, against Leeds United for a challenge on Crysencio Summerville and against Bournemouth at the start of the 2023-24 season for handball.
Paquetá, who was represented by Nick De Marco KC, was the first Premier League player to be charged with spot-fixing. It is understood that although the FA did not seek a lifetime ban, a guilty verdict would have led to him being banned from football worldwide for many years.
Betting firms allow punters to gamble on whether a player is booked in a match, but Paquetá had denied the charges.
There had also been allegations that a fellow Brazilian, Luiz Henrique, was involved in spot-fixing for one match on the same day as Paquetá when he was playing for Real Betis in Spain's La Liga but the Spanish FA did not bring any charges and he denied any wrongdoing.
In 2022, the FA imposed a ten-year ban on a former Reading defender, Kynan Isaac, for spot-fixing by getting deliberately booked in an FA Cup tie in which he played in for Southern Premier League side Stratford Town. He was given a further 18-month ban for betting offences, and 12 more months for not cooperating.
In 2018, Lincoln City's defender Bradley Wood was banned for six years for two spot-fixing offences during the FA Cup. An FA regulatory commission said Wood would have been banned for life had the offence affected the outcome of the game.

David de Gea sends Man Utd message as goalkeeper prepares for Old Trafford return

Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea spent more than a decade with Manchester United but left the club in 2023 when Erik ten Hag was in charge at the Premier League club Manchester United will welcome goalkeeper David de Gea back to Old Trafford this weekend, two years after he left the club. And the Spaniard has sent a message to fans aead of his return. ‌ The former Atletico Madrid star saw his contract expire in 2023, joining Fiorentina a full year later. The Viola are due in Manchester on Saturday for what will be United's final warm-up game ahead of the new season - a year to the day after De Gea moved to Tuscany. ‌ "United Road. See you Saturday," De Gea wrote on social media. The keeper's comments were met with positivity from United supporters, some of whom even suggested he'd be preferable to the English side's current options in the home goal. ‌ "Right after the game, we won't let you out of Old Trafford. Fiorentina can go with [Andre] Onana," one supporter wrote under De Gea's message. "Welcome home Dave," wrote a second, with a third saying: "We miss you". "Will be great seeing you play again. Terrible how our club treat you," was the verdict from a fourth. De Gea's former club are looking to round off an unbeaten pre-season campaign by getting the better of Fiorentina. After a goalless draw with Leeds in Stockholm, Ruben Amorim's team claimed two wins and a draw in the Premier League Summer Series in the United States. There was room for improvement in the last of those games, a 2-2 draw with Everton, which prompted captain Bruno Fernandes to ask questions. Ruben Amorim's side will now hope to go out with a bang before beginning their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 17. United could find themselves without first-choice keeper Onana for the weekend friendly. The Cameroon international has been working his way back from injury and is optimistic about returning for the league opener, but the Fiorentina match-up may still come too early. "l'm good, I feel great," Onana told NBC during United's spell in the US. "It's been a few difficult weeks but yeah, hopefully, I will be back for the start of the season. I'm enjoying the training with my guys and we are looking forward." Reflecting on the tour, he added: "We're happy with the way things are going. We play well, score goals and I'm happy how the team is developing themselves. Let's see. I think it's going to be important to have a good start against Arsenal and then everything is possible."

Pep Guardiola tells Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers what he wants to hear about Simpson-Pusey as 'trust' made crystal clear

Rodgers knows Guardiola trusts Simpson-Pusey implicitly and you don't have to look far for cold hard proof of that Brendan Rodgers hinted Pep Guardiola's 'trust' in Jahmai Simpson-Pusey may have been one of the driving factors behind Celtic's decision to bring him in. ‌ And there's no denying the Man City boss rates the youngster after he delivered a public glowing verdict on the 'unbelievable' 19-year-old. ‌ The centre-back arrives at Parkhead after something of a breakthrough season at the Etihad where he managed six top-team appearances, which included starts in the Premier League and Champions League. on top of a number of cup outings. ‌ That experience with some of the best players in the world made it a no-brainer for Rodgers to bring him in and, speaking to Sky Sports, he admitted the faith shown by Guardiola in him last season made it an easy decision to bring him in. Rodgers said: "He's a young player that I feel can come into this environment and really support us in the games that we play. "We need a number of centre halves and he is one, with his profile and attributes that fit how we play. ‌ "He has got good pace. He is a good defender first and foremost but he can also play football because at Celtic, you need to be able to build the game from behind and progress it quickly. He can do that. "He has had some senior games with Manchester City and has had the trust of Pep (Guardiola) to put him in. Now he comes here for a year and continues that education at a massive club." And you don't need to look far for a sign of that 'trust' Rodgers is referring to. ‌ Simpson-Pusey is fancied to have a big future and, if Guardiola is to be believed, then it's a major coup for Celtic to bring him in. He threw him in for his Premier League debut against Brighton back in November, having previously started him against Sporting CP in the Champions League. ‌ City, struggling for form, lost that game 2-1. But Simpson-Pusey was one of the bright spots as he looked capable beside Josko Gvardiol and Kyle Walker in the back line. Speaking after the game, Guardiola said: 'Jahmai Simpson-Pusey played really good again, with this composure – the duels, everything was good. We have a central defender to help us for the next years. 'I'm really pleased. Always, there is good news when a situation is going bad – and this is one of them. It's not easy for him. ‌ 'Normally, the young lads come in with the support of the team – Rodri in front of them, the best Kyle Walker and other defenders. He's playing in a position that is difficult for him, and he performed unbelievably.' Ollie Watkins stance on Man Utd transfer after Benjamin Sesko bid

Ollie Watkins is keen on a move to Manchester United if the club are unable to sign Benjamin Sesko, according to reports. United have now tabled a €85 million (£73.8m) bid to sign Sesko from RB Leipzig but the Bundesliga side are also considering a rival offer from Newcastle. Sesko is yet to make a final decision over his future, although reports in Slovenia last Friday had suggested that the 22-year-old has opted to join Newcastle. United have alternative options to Sesko, who scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga last season, if he rejects a move to Old Trafford and Watkins is on the club's shortlist. An approach was made to Aston Villa last month but United were told that the 29-year-old is not for sale. Villa also rejected a £60m bid for Watkins from Arsenal in the closing stages of the January transfer window. According to The Sun, Watkins believes now is the right time to leave, while Villa would consider a £50m offer for their striker, who scored 16 goals in the Premier League last season. More Trending The report adds that United have also shortlisted Samu Aghehowa, who scored 27 goals for Porto last term and came close to joining Chelsea a year ago. Benfica's 26-year-old forward, Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored 30 goals last season, is also on United's radar. United have also been offered Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic but reports in Italy claim that the Serie A club have been informed that Sesko is United's priority target. Ruben Amorim could also have the option of signing Nicolas Jackson as Chelsea are open to selling the 24-year-old for £80m. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
