‘What Maharashtra wants will happen': Uddhav Thackeray confirms talks with MNS; Sanjay Raut hints ‘process has begun'

Indian Express2 days ago

Amid growing talks over a possible reconciliation with cousin Raj Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday confirmed that discussions—at least informally—are underway with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), saying that the party is now looking into 'minute details' of a potential alliance.
'There is no confusion in my mind or that of my Shiv Sainiks. Even MNS workers are in touch with us, and there is no confusion in their minds either,' Uddhav told reporters at his residence, Matoshree.
When asked directly about the status of the talks, he replied, 'Let us contemplate some minute details.' He added, 'I will not give a message—I will give news. And what is in the hearts of the people of Maharashtra—that will happen.'
Uddhav's remarks come a day after Raj's son Amit hit out at Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders for giving sound bites daily and instead called for a direct conversation between the two cousins.
'Alliances are not formed through media sound bites or newspaper headlines. Direct dialogue is necessary,' Amit had said on Thursday, adding that the two leaders have each other's phone numbers.
He revealed that it was Raj who had taken the initiative to start talks, not just during the COVID-19 pandemic when he called Uddhav, then the Maharashtra chief minister, but also earlier in 2014 and 2017.
Asked about his own views, Amit said, 'Whatever Raj Thackeray wants is what I want,' but reiterated that 'two brothers should talk — others talking won't help.'
On Friday, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut added to the momentum, saying that the 'process has begun'. 'We Sainiks are positive because the two leaders—the brothers—are positive. When we talk about phone calls between them, who knows? Maybe they have already spoken. How would we know?' Raut told reporters.
'Once the due process is completed, you will see the fruits of it. There is positivity among the workers of both parties,' he said.
Raut also quipped that he may soon visit Raj's residence. 'I may drop by Raj Thackeray's house for tea. After all, it is my house too.'
The growing signals of rapprochement between the once-bitter rivals have now triggered responses across the political spectrum.
The Congress, a key ally of the Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), extended support to the development. 'If two brothers are coming together, we welcome it,' said party spokesperson Atul Londhe.
However, Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar offered a more guarded view. 'If the two brothers are coming together or not, it is their lookout. What and how can we comment on that?'
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray, speaking earlier this week, had also signalled openness to the idea of working together. 'Anyone who is committed to the welfare of Maharashtra and the Marathi people is welcome,' he had said, citing a recent protest jointly held by Sena (UBT)'s Deepesh Mhatre and MNS's Raju Patil as an example of coordination on the ground.
Despite the continued exchange of goodwill from both camps, political observers, however, remain cautious. 'Unless there's a face-to-face meeting between Uddhav and Raj, the rest is conjecture. But Uddhav's remark today is the closest we have seen to confirmation,' a senior analyst said.
Raj Thackeray had split from the undivided Shiv Sena in 2005 and launched the MNS in 2006, following a bitter succession dispute in the Thackeray family.

BJP replying to Rahul's Maharashtra poll questions instead of EC confirms match-fixing: Chennithala

BJP leaders replying to Rahul Gandhi's questions on the 2024 Maharashtra polls instead of the Election Commission of India confirms the "match-fixing" charge, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said on Sunday (June 8, 2025). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' article, with facts and figures to refute Mr. Gandhi's claims, was published in The Indian Express and the Marathi daily Loksatta during the day. Earlier, top BJP leaders, including party chief J.P. Nadda, had slammed Mr. Gandhi for casting aspersions on the country's electoral process. "BJP leaders are replying on behalf of the Election Commission, which is concerning. It only confirms that match-fixing did take place. Rahul Gandhi, in his detailed article, has exposed how the Maharashtra assembly elections were marred by fraud, manipulation, and a systematic violation of the people's mandate, amounting to a brutal assault on democracy," Mr. Chennithala said in a statement. The ECI must respond to serious questions raised by Mr. Gandhi, who has exposed a "disturbing truth", Mr. Chennithala said while asserting the happenings related to the state polls were not accidental but a meticulously-planned operation. "Maharashtra, once a beacon of democratic values, is now witnessing a deep erosion of those values. The Congress has been consistently following up with the Election Commission, but so far, the responses have been superficial and unsatisfactory," the AICC in charge for the state said. Mr. Chennithala said when the Chandigarh High Court ordered the release of CCTV footage in connection with the Haryana assembly polls, the Union government, with help from the EC, changed the rules and blocked that information. "Why was that done? And for whose benefit?" he asked. The Maharashtra polls involved manipulation in the voter list, large-scale bogus voting and artificial inflation of vote percentages, Chennithala alleged. "In the Lok Sabha election, Congress and its allies won a sweeping mandate. Then how could the outcome reverse so drastically within just five months? This reeks of electoral fraud," he said. The refusal to conduct a mock drill in Markadwadi (where some people sought a repoll after alleging EVM manipulation) itself is a sign that something was being hidden, he added. The BJP and EC are trying to hide the truth but the Congress will pursue it relentlessly till democratic integrity is restored, Chennithala asserted.

Maharashtra Congress calls Fadnavis's response to Rahul Gandhi ‘laughable', seeks narco test of chief electoral officer and his former deputy

Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal Sunday said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's counter to Rahul Gandhi's claims of 'matchfixing' in the 2024 Maharashtra elections was 'superficial' and 'laughable'. He also demanded a narco test on Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam and then-additional CEO Kiran Kulkarni. In an opinion piece for The Indian Express Saturday, Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, said the total electors in Maharashtra had increased more between the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections than between the 2019 and 2024 Assembly polls. He alleged that most of the additional electors were in 85 constituencies where the BJP had not done well in the Lok Sabha polls. In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition, which includes the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, secured a total of 235 seats. The BJP alone won 132 seats for its best performance in the state. In contrast, the opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi, composed of the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), was only able to win 46 seats. Replying to Gandhi, Fadnavis, in another opinion piece for The Indian Express, said the Congress leader was rejecting the people's mandate after they rejected him and his party. Sapkal said, 'Leader of Opposition (in Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi has raised some critical questions on the electoral process of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. However, instead of the Election Commission responding, it is the BJP and CM Devendra Fadnavis who have jumped in with a counter-article. His reply, however, is laughable and an evasive attempt to distract the public,' said Sapkal. Sapkal slammed Fadnavis, saying he should stop acting like a 'judicial icon'. 'His responses are weak, superficial, and fail to address the actual questions,' said Sapkal, adding that Fadnavis is a 'compulsive liar'. On Chockalingam and Kulkarni, Sapkal said, 'These officers were at the helm when voter scam took place in Maharashtra Assembly elections. To expose the truth behind the alleged vote theft in Maharashtra, these officers must be subjected to a narco test.' 'Every issue Rahul Gandhi has raised over the years has proven to be correct with time. He warned of the China threat, and now the dragon is encroaching on India. He warned that demonetisation would devastate the economy and lower GDP, and it did. He alerted the nation to the dangers of Covid-19 when the BJP government ignored it, and the country paid a heavy price,' said Sapkal. 'Today, questions are being raised over the transparency and integrity of the Election Commission's conduct. These are questions of democratic survival, and it is the Commission's duty to answer them. Instead, it remains silent, denies CCTV footage, and quietly changes the rules,' Sapkal added. On the EC's criticism that Gandhi was going to the media, Sapkal said, 'Does the Election Commission deny that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy? The questions raised by the Congress and Rahul Gandhi deserve factual, objective responses from the Commission.' Meanwhile, EC sources Sunday said Gandhi had not written to the body or sought a meeting so far and that the Commission would respond when he does.
