Sri Lankan Navy apprehends 7 Indian fishermen for allegedly crossing maritime border
As per the association, at around 5 am, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended the crew of the fishing boat 'IND-TN-10-MM-746', belonging to V Isaac Paul of Rameswaram's Thangachimadam, on the charges of crossing the international maritime boundary, ANI reported.
According to Rameswaram Fishermen Association, a total of 456 fishing boats had ventured into the sea on Saturday after obtaining permits from the Rameswaram fishing port.
The arrested fishermen, identified as P Tuthar (40) of Thangachimadam Raja Nagar, P Edison (51) of Thangachimadam Walasai Street, Shanmugam (50) of Rameswaram TSM Nagar, Sakthivel (47), Jagadish (48), Dalvin Raj (46), and Anbazhagan of Manthope, were taken to Kankesanthurai port in Sri Lanka for investigation.
Earlier this month, four fishermen from Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district safely returned home after being rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy when their boat capsized at mid-sea. Although no formal charges were filed against them, the fishermen were held in custody for several days before being taken to Colombo.
Fisheries Department officials received the fishermen in Chennai and arranged for their transport back to Rameswaram via a private vehicle.
The fishermen expressed their gratitude to the Sri Lankan Navy for saving their lives and ensuring their safe return.

HC rejects Pune teacher's plea against FIR for posts against PM, country
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea by a 46-year-old teacher from Pune, seeking quashing of FIR for allegedly posting objectionable messages on a WhatsApp group against the Prime Minister and the country after the armed forces carried out 'Operation Sindoor' in May this year. The court held that contents of FIR and material on record 'constitute the ingredients of the alleged offences' and the plea with 'no merit' deserved to be dismissed. In doing so, the Bombay HC said it was in 'agreement with the view' taken in the July 2 order of Allahabad HC that rejected bail plea of a man booked for objectionable posts against PM and armed forces. The Bombay HC reiterated, 'it has become a fashion among certain groups of people to misuse social media in the garb of freedom of speech and expression by making baseless allegations against high dignitaries, posting such material that creates hatred and disharmony among the people.' It added, 'such action shows disrespect not only against the Prime Minister of the country but also against the Indian military and its officers.' A division bench of Justices Ajey S Gadkari and Rajesh S Patil on Tuesday passed a verdict on plea by a 46-year-old woman from Pune, seeking quashing of an FIR lodged by Kalepadal police station in Pune on May 15. She was booked for offences punishable under sections 152 (acts endangering sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India), 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race etc), 197 (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 353 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The FIR alleged that the petitioner and complainant reside in the same housing society and were members of a women-only WhatsApp group of nearly 380 members. On May 7, the members praised the Indian armed forces for conducting Operation Sindoor, while the petitioner allegedly claimed that the group should not be used as a National News Channel. Another member replied it was the time to show solidarity towards the nation, to which the petitioner allegedly reacted with a laughing emoji, leading to certain exchanges of messages. Subsequently, as per FIR, she posted messages against PM and the country, based on which FIR was lodged. Advocate Harshad Sathe said his client was not in a sound condition during exchange of messages and she deleted the same as soon as she realised reactions of other members and had apologised to the complainant. Sathe argued that the 'petitioner is already at a loss' being expelled from the school and an FIR without merit should be quashed and set aside. The HC observed that the petitioner was a 'well educated' person and though she tendered her apology to the complainant, 'innumerable damage has already been caused' by her already circulated messages. It also referred to 'unrest in local areas' after her messages, resulting in people approaching the local police station in groups. The court said that it was expected of a 'prudent person,' and 'well educated' petitioner teacher to consider 'pros and cons' before posting such messages and her defence that she had realised the messages being 'controversial' and were posting them due to 'deranged mental condition will not be helpful.' The court said her 'intention becomes an essential ingredient to be judged with the kind of language she has used for India, more particularly when the whole country was feeling proud of our army' and 'she could have probably avoided reacting with a laughing emoji.' The HC added the woman did not respond to allegations made in notice sent by police and as chargesheet is yet to be filed in the case, FIR cannot be quashed at this stage.

Indian-origin pilot arrested in US on charges of sex crimes against child
An Indian-origin pilot was arrested on charges of sex crimes against a child, shortly after his flight landed at San Francisco International Airport, US authorities said. Rustom Bhagwagar, 34, a Delta airline pilot, was arrested on the evening of July 26, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Investigation Division said in a statement on Monday. At about 9:35 PM on Saturday, authorities, with the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations, boarded the plane to arrest him, it County Office said it had been investigating since April 2025 after receiving a report of sex crimes against a child, and an arrest warrant was later secured for Bhagwagar. Bhagwagar, of Florida, was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on five counts of oral copulation with a child under 10 years of age. He is being held in lieu of $5 million bail, the statement said. A report in said that passengers reported seeing multiple federal agents push into the cockpit Saturday and arrest Bhagwagar shortly after the plane landed in San quoted a statement by Delta to say that the pilot has been suspended from the airline pending the investigation."Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful conduct and will fully cooperate with law enforcement," the Delta spokesperson said, according to the report. "We are appalled by reports of the charges related to the arrest and the individual in question has been suspended pending an investigation." The KTVU report said that a female has alleged that while Bhagwagar was dating her mother, he "sexually abused her from the ages of six until eleven years old." The girl alleges her mother knew about the abuse because she was present for some of the sexual acts.

In a bizarre case straight out of an Indian soap opera, two siblings in China's Tianjin city who had been fighting over a Rs 3.6 crore (three million yuan) inheritance left by their dead father, have now discovered that neither of them was the biological child. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Sun, the family head, died in March 2025. Before his death, he transferred ownership of the Rs 3.6 crore property solely to his son. Mr Sun also instructed his son to provide "reasonable compensation" to his daughter, who was adopted by him and his wife in 1966. "Our daughter is adopted, but we have always treated her as our own. In our later years, it was our son who took care of us. We gave the house to him, and he intends to compensate his sister. We hope you two can get along like true siblings," the statement read. The adopted daughter protested against the decision, arguing that the property transfer contract bore only the father's signature, implying that her mother's share should still be included in the estate. "Since the contract was signed only by him, my mother's share should be treated as part of the inheritance. This house was given to me by my parents, no one is taking it from me," she said. The dispute then turned into a legal battle at the Nankai District People's Court in Tianjin. In the court, the sister presented new evidence claiming that her brother's household registration documents were marked "adopted", proving he was not a biological child. The settlement Soon after the revelation, the brother broke down in the court but insisted that his sister had not been in the family picture since the 1990s. As per him, a property dispute decades ago led to his sister severing ties with the family, leaving him to take care of their parents until their deaths. The judge overseeing the case noted that the property was legally transferred and notarised in 2007, meaning it was no longer part of the inheritance estate. After some back and forth between the siblings, a settlement was reached. The property would stay with the brother, who would have to pay his sister Rs 66 lakh (550,000 yuan) in compensation. Social media users reacting to the verdict said that both kids were adopted, but the boy was kept in the dark about it while the daughter knew, which may have led to the rift.
