Geraldine Viswanathan Brings Bold Energy to the Marvelverse
Pullover, shorts, Sacai. Boots, Ugg x Sacai. Necklace, bracelets, Bulgari.
When she was six, Geraldine Viswanathan auditioned for a spot at a performing arts school in her hometown of Newcastle, Australia. The task? Pretend to walk a dog. 'I rocked it,' she says, smiling at the memory. 'They saw the dog. They
felt
the dog.'
Less than two decades later, the actress faced an entirely different challenge: losing her virginity on prom night. In 2018's
Blockers
, she stole the show as John Cena's sporty, sex-positive daughter, exuding a cool confidence well beyond her years. Her career took off from there—she exposed Hugh Jackman's fraud in the HBO film
Bad Education
, tempted fate alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi on TBS's
Miracle Workers
, and unleashed cross-country chaos with her lesbian bestie (played by
Drive-Away Dolls
.
Most recently, in Prime Video's rom-com
You're Cordially Invited
, she played Will Ferrell's daughter, a pairing that sparked some palpable comedic chemistry. 'He made me laugh so hard,' she says. 'I've had some really great dads.'
Viswanathan thrives on pushing herself into uncharted territory with each new role. She's not just showing up and delivering a deadpan punch line—each performance feels like an invitation to watch someone redefine what we think they're capable of.

Her chameleon talents will be on display soon in
'Oh, Hi!'
, a rom-com-gone-wrong directed by Sophie Brooks and co-written with
recently rebranded as
*The New Avengers
in a unique marketing move—where she'll take on the role of Mel, the assistant to Julia Louis-Dreyfus's domineering CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. She thinks the role was meant to be: 'When I was 18, I came to L.A. with my family, and my mom saw a psychic who said I'd be in a superhero movie,' she says. 'I need to get that psychic's number!'
Filming the movie was unlike anything she had ever encountered before: 'There was no green screen, and it was the craziest set that I've ever been on, just the sheer number of extras.' And contrary to what some fans might expect from a big-budget franchise, there was no special initiation: 'The most Marvel-y thing I had to do was meet with the security team and get a little badge.'
'Feeling undervalued inspired me to act because I love to do it—not because anybody is asking me to do it.'
With precious few women of color taking on leading roles in Hollywood, the space can be frustratingly limited. Viswanathan—born to an Indian father, who's a nuclear medicine specialist, and a Swiss artist mother—is keenly aware of this, having felt her ethnicity was a barrier to getting cast in Australia. 'It was an experience that has defined who I am, especially growing up as the only person of color in a small, white town,' she says. 'Feeling undervalued inspired me to act because I love to do it—not because anybody is asking me to do it. When you approach life that way, it becomes more magnetic.'
She's also managed to reach It girl status, recently attending her third Paris Fashion Week, where she sat front row beside fellow Aussie Rose Byrne at the Zimmermann show. 'She's had some of my favorite roles,' Viswanathan gushes. '[Byrne] is so brilliant, cool, kind, and funny—she was killing me.'

When it comes to her own viewing habits, Viswanathan gravitates toward ensemble comedies like
The Hangover
. As for Harry Potter, which stars her
Miracle Worker
s castmate Radcliffe, she admits, 'I was, like, seven when I went to see the first movie and had to leave the theater because I was scared....There was a scene where a troll put a wand up his nose. It was too much for me.'
So does that rule out the fantasy genre in the future? If Viswanathan has taught us anything, it's that the unexpected is her baseline—but she's always grounded in an unapologetic authenticity. 'I could see myself going there…it's not my first instinct, because I always try to do things I'd actually want to watch,' she says, before adding wryly: 'And I'm still a little bitch.'

Your ultimate Indiana State Fair food guide
As you make your 2025 Indiana State Fair plans, be sure to show up hungry. Why it matters: This year's Taste of the Fair lineup features 40 culinary creations that you need to see to believe and taste to understand. Driving the news: We had the chance to sample the full menu before opening day to give you the inside scoop on what vendors have been cooking up. Here is some of what we tried. 🥬 All Vegan Indianapolis Philly from the Black Leaf Vegan food truck Slices of plant-based meat, sautéed peppers and onions are smothered in a creamy "cheez" sauce on a toasted gluten-free hoagie. Arika's thought bubble: It's great to have vegan and gluten-free options at the fair. It's even better that they're delicious. While the texture of the plant-based meat is slightly different from your traditional philly cheesesteak, all the flavors worked well together. I would totally order this. Justin's thought bubble: A little softer than an OG cheesesteak, but I didn't miss the meat at all. Flavorful and filling, I'd actually opt for this over the real thing if I was in the mood for something a little lighter. Big kudos on the "cheez" sauce. 🍹 Brunch Mimosa from Urick Concessions This isn't your average mimosa. It's served with skewers of a mini sausage breakfast sandwich, fruit kebab, bacon, donut holes and a waffle stick — all inside your glass. Arika: Once you get to the actual drink, it's a classic (and not too sweet!) mimosa made with bubbly from Indy's Easley Winery. 🍪 Cookie Butter Cold Brew Float from Hooks Drugstore Museum Vanilla cold brew and ice cream get topped with whipped cream, cookie butter drizzle, cookie crumbles and a cherry. Arika: 10/10. Why aren't we doing cold brew floats all the time?! Justin: A top three flavor of the fair for me. Delicious and visually appealing to boot. Expect to see this all over Instagram this summer. 🦞 Lobster Mac and Cheese from Freund Family Foods Chunks of lobster meat are tossed in garlic butter and folded into homemade cheese sauce. Arika: I didn't have lobster on my state fair food bingo card but this was super solid. 🥒 Pickle Fried Oreos from the Pickle Barrel There were fried pickles and there were deep-fried Oreos and now there are pickle fried Oreos. A golden Oreo with a pickle slice placed on top is dipped in batter and fried, topped with dill pickle seasoning and served with a side of ranch. Arika: This is a crime. Justin: This is a dream! Eat it all in one bite. The sweetness of the batter, which is similar to what you get on a corn dog, helps the Oreo and pickle pairing make sense. But getting too much of one flavor without all three is a recipe for disaster. 🍍 Pineapple Whip Shake Up from Hi & Mighty A fair favorite in canned cocktail form, it's slightly effervescent and tastes of pineapple, coconut and summer. Arika: Another winner from the folks at Hi & Mighty, who produce canned cocktails and spirits from their distillery at the Fairgrounds. This might be my favorite of the shakeup flavors — it's super refreshing and not too sweet, perfect for a hot day at the fair. Justin: Light and refreshing with a lovely level of carbonation. It's also a nice palate cleanser after eating some of the more extreme flavors on offer at this year's fair. 🧀 The Smoked Gouda'cue from the American Dairy Association Smoked gouda, sharp cheddar and tangy barbecue sauce get melted between two slices of buttery, golden Texas toast. Arika: This is what fair food is all about for me. It's indulgent, it's comfort food and it's got a little twist with the barbecue sauce. The Texas toast adds a crunch and holds up well without being too dry. I'll be going back for this bad boy. 🇮🇹 Trio of Italy from Freund Family Foods A flight of three mini Italian-inspired funnel cakes: tiramisu, Italian wedding cake and cannoli. Arika: Please share this with friends. They call it a flight of "mini" funnel cakes but each was larger than my hand. The Italian wedding cake was my favorite, with cream cheese frosting, chopped pecans and shredded coconut. It didn't get soggy like the tiramisu and had some nice texture from the toppings. Justin: The crispy funnel cake made the cannoli my favorite of the bunch. Close your eyes and it's almost like eating the real thing. 🍯 Hot Honey Beignets from The Bakerman New Orleans-style beignets with a kick. Topped with the traditional powdered sugar and then drizzled with hot honey. Arika: This was a miss for me. The beignets fell a little flat and the hot honey had trouble sticking over the powdered sugar, rolling off the sides instead. 🥣 Cinnamon Toast Cookie Butter Pretzel Bites from Wilson Concessions Soft pretzel bites are covered in cinnamon and sugar then smothered with cookie butter, cream cheese icing and topped off with Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Arika: I thought this would have too much going on but it was great — the salty pretzel bites played nicely with the sweet toppings and the crunch from the cereal added a welcome texture. Justin: Cinnamon Toast Crunch is my favorite breakfast cereal, so me falling in love with this was no surprise. Get one ASAP. And if you don't like it, find me at the fair and I'll take your leftovers. 🍔 Yes Cer's Burger from Red Frazier Bison A bison burger comes stacked with pimento cheese, crunchy potato sticks and tangy horseradish pickles between two thick slices of Texas toast. Justin: If you're not a Pacers fan, this burger will turn you into one after one bite. The texture is top notch. The potato sticks pack some serious crunch that blends beautifully with the creamy pimento cheese and tender burger. Yes Cer, indeed. 🫐 Blueberry Breakfast Sausage Flapjack from Smokehouse Saloon (Red Frazier) House-made blueberry breakfast sausage wrapped in a flapjack. Served with fresh fruit, powdered sugar and syrup. Justin: Like the idea, but not the execution. It was suggested that we fold it up and eat it like a taco, but the flapjack lacked the fluffiness and flexibility to make it work. The sausage, however, was very tasty. 💃🏾 Dirty Dancing Egg Rolls from Taste of Home Catering & Food Truck Chicken Philly egg rolls dipped in homemade hot honey, lemon pepper buffalo sauce and drizzled with ranch dressing. Justin: If they turned up the heat on this, this could have been a game-changer. But if you like your buffalo sauce mild, you'll find a lot to like here. 🌶️ Jalapeño Popper Pizza from DG Concessions/Ginocchios Pizza Pizza with a garlic butter and light marinara base, topped with a mozzarella cheese blend, pepperoni, jalapeño poppers, bacon and a drizzle of ranch dressing. Justin: Two thumbs way up. The crust had some nice crunch, and the jalapeño poppers were plentiful. 🍋 Passion Fruit Boba Lemonade Shakeup from Indiana Ribeye Boba pearls provide a remix on the classic lemonade shakeup formula. Justin: In the running for one of my favorite State Fair drinks this year, and I'm not even a huge boba fan. It's a fun take on a summer staple. 🥒 Pickle Bacon Ranch Pizza from Swains Concessions Pizza with pickle ranch sauce, mozzarella cheese, bacon and even more pickles. Justin: I wish I could eat this year-round. A personal highlight, this pizza packs in the pickle without allowing it to overpower the rest of the pie. 10/10, will eat again. 🍫 S'mores Cookie from The Cavity Factory A graham cracker base with milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Topped with a marshmallow that can be torched.

Jinkx Monsoon Mocks J.K. Rowling's Hypocritical Transphobia: ‘Not a Feminine Name in the Slightest'
It is officially monsoon season, so it's no wonder why Broadway star and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Jinkx Monsoon is unleashing a deluge on Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. In a new clip from her upcoming interview with Ziwe, Monsoon answers a tongue-in-cheek question about whether or not Rowling would 'make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago' by pointing out why she feels the author's transphobic comments over the years feel deeply hypocritical. More from Billboard Jinkx Monsoon Will Sashay Into the Leading Role of Broadway's 'Oh, Mary!' This Summer Jinkx Monsoon Will Fight 'Tooth and Nail' to Keep Queer Talent in the Mainstream After Her 'Doctor Who' Arc Jade Thirlwall Leads Her Mighty Hoopla Crowd in an Anti-J.K. Rowling Chant Putting on a drunk affectation, Monsoon started off her answer by pretending she didn't know Rowling and actively using the wrong pronouns for her. 'Who is Jake? Who is he? Jake Hay Rowling?' she said, clutching a rocks glass. When Ziwe pointed out that Rowling is a 'she,' Monsoon quickly quipped, 'Oh, dear. That is not a feminine name in the slightest.' The performer then went on to use her faux-confusion as a jumping off point, saying that Rowling intentionally misled readers about her own gender at the outset of her career. 'I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer,' Monsoon explained, before adding with a smirk, 'I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived.' In past interviews, Rowling has revealed that she wrote under a pen name (her real name is Joanne) because her publishers wanted to 'disguise' her gender so the book would 'appeal to boys and girls.' It's worth noting Rowling also writes her ongoing Cormoran Strike crime series under the male pseudonym Robert Galbraith. In an FAQ on Galbraith's website, Rowling says that she writes under a male nom de plume simply because she 'wanted to take my writing persona as far away as possible from me.' Rowling has made headlines over the last few years for her transphobic comments online, and for actively campaigning against reformational laws in the U.K. that would allow transgender people to change their legal gender. When the U.K. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the legal definition of a woman only applied to those whose biological sex was female, Rowling posted a controversial photo of herself drinking a cocktail and smoking a cigar in celebration. 'I love it when a plan comes together,' she wrote. Monsoon, meanwhile, is currently transitioning between two massive theater projects. After playing the role of Ruth in the Tony-nominated Pirates! A Penzance Musical, Monsoon is gearing up to star as Mary Todd Lincoln in the Tony-winning play Oh, Mary! Monsoon takes over the role from Tituss Burgess starting on Monday (Aug. 4). Pokémon TCG Pocket Pulls Rare Card Artwork After Plagiarism Allegations
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The Pokémon Company launched a new expansion in Pokémon TCG Pocket today, but before it was even released, it was subject to major controversy, which has resulted in a surprising change to the game. Just prior to the launch of the Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion in Pokémon TCG Pocket, a datamine for the update made its way onto the internet. Among the cards leaked was an immersive rare card – some of the rarest cards in the game – for a Ho-Oh ex that bears a striking resemblance to fan art produced in 2021 by Chinese artist Lanjiujiu. Three starter Pokémon cards from the Pokémon TCG Pocket Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion. Three starter Pokémon cards from the Pokémon TCG Pocket Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion. The Pokémon Company Lanjiujiu noticed the resemblance and posted on X (formerly Twitter) in confusion, showing a comparison of the card with their artwork that shows it looking effectively identical. Many were quick to blame Pokémon TCG artist SIE NANAHARA, who's produced dozens of artworks for the Pokémon TCG, Pokémon TCG Pocket, and Magic the Gathering, among others, accusing her of plagiarism — but a new statement from The Pokémon Company has cleared up the situation. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), The Pokémon Company through the official Pokémon TCG Pocket account shedding light on the situation and pledging to make things right. According to The Pokémon Company, illustrator SIE NANAHARA was provided with "incorrect reference materials" upon which to base her illustrations, resulting in the similarity to Lanjiujiu's artwork. After the discovery was made, The Pokémon Company quickly moved to remove the artwork from the affected cards – both Ho-Oh ex and Lugia ex, which features the Ho-Oh card in its immersive animation – and will be replacing it with new artwork in the future. The company says it will also be conducting an extensive review of artwork in the game to ensure no similar issues exist within prior works released in the game. We'd like to share an update about the upcoming expansion in #PokemonTCGPocket. — Pokémon TCG Pocket (@PokemonTCGP) July 30, 2025 As of the time of publishing, if players pull the card in a set, they're greeted with a blank, artwork-free card that simply says "New art coming soon." Attempting to play the immersive animation for the card sees players greeted with silence and a black screen for a few seconds, before the placeholder card is displayed again.
