Wynne Evans says he is not a misogynist after remarks during Strictly tour

Leader Live25-05-2025
The Welsh tenor and BBC Radio Wales presenter, also known for his Go.Compare insurance adverts, was touring with the live show after competing on the BBC One programme with Katya Jones last year, when reports by the Mail On Sunday claimed the singer had made sexual remarks about Janette Manrara during a cast photocall.
Evans issued a statement apologising and said: 'I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing.
'I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection.'
Speaking to the Sun on Sunday, he claimed he had not seen the statement apologising for the remark.
He told the newspaper the comment was not sexual or directed to Manrara but was a nickname for fellow contestant, EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick.
He said: 'I didn't see the statement. Old Spit-roast Boy was a nickname for Jamie Borthwick. I'm not a bad guy, I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things.'
'It's been heartbreaking. 'Spit-roast boy' was a nickname we all gave Jamie Borthwick because he could contort his legs over his head like a spit-roast chicken.
'But it absolutely wasn't meant sexually – and the fact I used 'boy', all right it's nuanced, but it shows I was talking to Jamie, not Janette.
'And of course, your natural reaction is, if you're told you've offended someone, you say, 'God, I'm so sorry'.
'And so I went, 'I'm so sorry'. And that was taken as a formal apology, so the press team issued a statement. I didn't see it.
'When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified.
'It's been a truly awful past few months, having to keep my counsel and let the narrative that I'm some sort of weirdo run.
'I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things.'
Evans was also criticised when a video showed him place his hand on professional dancer Jones's waist, which she moved, during last year's Strictly Come Dancing competition.
He claimed this was a 'body language experiment' from TikTok that Jones had suggested, and added: 'We did it, we laughed, we went downstairs to make-up and my phone explodes and I look at it… and let me tell you the body language experiment worked.'
Later Evans and Jones apologised claiming that it had been a 'joke'.
The singer performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and also won 2023's Celebrity MasterChef.
He was eliminated during the Blackpool week of Strictly last year.
BBC Studios, which produces the Strictly tour, said: 'Any statement issued on Wynne Evans' behalf was fully approved by Wynne Evans. Wynne posted his own statement on Instagram in which he apologised.'

James Whale's last social media post with touching message to fans days before death

TalkTV star, James Whale, has sadly died, with his wife, Nadine, sharing the heartbreaking news James Whale left a poignant post on social media before his sad death today. The veteran broadcaster has died, aged 74, after a long battle with cancer. ‌ James released his final podcast with his wife, Nadine, just days before died and on July 28, he posted a link to his final newspaper column in which he thanked fans for their tributes as he lived out the 'last of his days'. Sharing a photo of himself and his wife on X, he wrote: "Thank you for all your kind messages," with a emoji of a whale. ‌ The TalkTV star was moved into a hospice recently as he told fans he'd come to the 'end of his cancer journey'. It comes as it was confirmed that James has sadly died today with his beloved wife by his side. ‌ Issuing a fresh health update for the presenter on GB News, Eamonn explained how James' illness is now impacting his vocal chords, making it hard for him to communicate with his loved ones. Speaking on his GB News show today, Eamonn said: "A friend of ours James Whale, who I have been to see, is nearing the end of his life maybe this week". As his guest Christopher Biggins revealed that the pair went to visit James at the hospice over the weekend, the former Strictly star said: "We went on Saturday to see him, and he looks terrific, I have to say, and it was great to see him but it's his voice that's the trouble. "The irony of being a journalist and using his voice on the radio brilliantly over the years, but now his voice is going." Giving viewers an insight into what James' care facility is like after he made the move to a hospice this week, Christopher added: "What was so wonderful is the hospice that he's staying in, which I think needs something like £12million a year or something to survive, it was just wonderful." ‌ The host had remained committed in sharing updates with his fans as he carried on his podcast, Tales of the Whales alongside his wife Nadine. On the final, emotional episode posted on Saturday, August 2, recorded after half a century as a broadcaster, James issuing a six-word statement to listeners. ‌ The radio star has been battling cancer for the past five years and has been dealing with 20 tumours throughout his body, including in his brain, spine, and lungs. Doctors recently informed James he has just weeks left to live, leaving his friends, family, and fans heartbroken. A touching clip from the columnist's last podcast was recently shared on TalkTV, with the journalist summoning the strength to say to his wife Nadine, "We've had a good time together, haven't we?" ‌ A supportive Nadine, who was next to him while the episode was being recorded, replied: "The best," before James whispered the words "I love you" to her. Clearly emotional, Nadine said: "I love you too. Shall we sign off on the podcast now?" His wife Nadine confirmed the news of James' passing on Monday, telling the Express: 'James slipped away very gently this morning. It was a beautiful passing and he left with a smile on his face.'

BBC Homes Under The Hammer host warns 'that's not a good sign' as she spots 'costly' issue

BBC Homes Under The Hammer host warns 'that's not a good sign' as she spots 'costly' issue Homes Under The Hammer's Jacqui Joseph opened the front door of a property in Norfolk and instantly knew there was a major problem Before even setting foot inside the property, Homes Under The Hammer presenter Jacqui Joseph encountered a significant problem that could deter potential buyers. ‌ In the opening sequence of the repeat episode broadcast on BBC One on Monday, August 4, Jacqui was seen exploring the seaside resort of Hunstanton, situated on the north-western shoreline of Norfolk and famed for its stunning beaches. ‌ Jacqui informed viewers that the seafront was merely a short stroll from the semi-detached Victorian, four-bedroom house she was featuring on the programme. ‌ Initially, she was impressed by the property's "grand" appearance, noting that it had an auction guide price of £200,000 plus. After offering her expert opinion on the exterior and praising the Victorian features, off-road parking, and the considerable size of the red brick, Jacqui was eager to see the interior. But upon opening the front door, she noticed something unusual. Stepping through the entrance, she pointed out the brick at the bottom of the white PVC front door and remarked, "Oh, that's not a good sign. You've got some dry rot there, but that could be because of the step outside," reports Norfolk Live. Jacqui knew straight away that something wasn't quite right ‌ Homes Under the Hammer presenter marks huge milestone on BBC show READ MORE: Venturing further into the hallway, Jacqui quickly realised the problem was more extensive than she initially thought. Attempting to enter the front room, she exclaimed in shock, "Oh, wow, there are no floors." The property expert confessed, "I'm not sure what has happened here, but obviously the floors had to be removed for a reason. "It could have been due to some serious damp, it could have just been rotten floorboards, it could be woodworm. But also, the plaster has been taken off the walls here." ‌ Upon further inspection of the house, Jacqui concluded: "There was obviously some serious damp here." Jacqui hadn't even stepped inside the property when she spotted a major issue Despite the significant challenges presented, Jane managed to secure the property at an online auction with a winning bid of £232,000, marking her first foray into auction buying. ‌ Jane admitted that upon initial viewing, she and her family – her husband and son – had underestimated the extent of work required on the property. The new owners of the semi-detached house had no intention of flipping or renting it out; they envisaged the Victorian dwelling as their future holiday home. During their appearance on the show with local builder Ben, they confirmed Jacqui's earlier concerns, noting that the property suffered from damp issues due to cracked external render. ‌ Jane and Ben confirmed Jacqui's suspicions (Image: BBC) They further discovered that the lack of ventilation beneath the floorboards was another significant and expensive issue that needed rectification. With Ben's assistance, Jane realised that the house required a complete overhaul, far beyond the simple updates of a new kitchen, bathroom, and a fresh coat of paint they had initially planned. ‌ Fresh flooring, skirting boards, plastered walls, exterior rendering, a complete electrical rewiring, new radiators, and a boiler. Jane had allocated £50,000 for all the renovation work, but owing to some significant complications, she revealed: "The budget was significantly exceeded. We were about £20,000 over, and there is a bit more to pay for yet." She continued: "I guess we're going to end up about £30,000 over budget."
