Marcos still mum on his next PNP chief
KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Tuesday that he has already picked the next Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.
Marcos, however, declined to disclose his choice but guaranteed that the government is clear on what to do next.
Speaking to the Philippine media delegation during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, Marcos said he wants to talk first to his choice before revealing it to the public.
Current PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil's extended term is set to expire on June 7.
In February, Marcos extended the term of Marbil by four months, which was beyond the cop's compulsory retirement age of 56 amid the election season. —RF, GMA Integrated News

VP Sara: Reconciling with Marcos not a priority
Vice President Sara Duterte said she is not prioritizing talks of reconciliation with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., saying the welfare of the public matters more than "personal issues." 'Unang-una, hindi muna siguro ako magsalita about reconciliation dahil hindi naman mahalaga siguro ang mga personal na problema... Ang mas mahalaga is 'yong taumbayan at iyong bayan natin,' she told reporters during an ambush interview at The Hague. She said she was able to see her father for an hour on Friday and that they talked about Eleksyon 2025. SWS survey Duterte also addressed the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey in which 88% of respondents said it was important for her to face the impeachment proceedings and answer the allegations. PH, US reaffirm alliance in 'pursuit of peace' of Indo-Pacific region
The Philippines and the United States reaffirmed their alliance and commitment to stability in the Indo-Pacific region as the countries' defense chiefs met at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. During the meeting, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, discussed deepening defense cooperation in support of regional peace, resilience, and a rules-based international order. 'The Philippines seeks peace, but it must be a sustainable peace—one grounded in our own resilience and reinforced through alliances with like-minded partners. We look forward to this meeting and to further strengthening our already robust defense relationship with the United States,' Teodoro said in a statement released on Saturday. Secretary Hegseth, meanwhile, committed to back the Philippines in its effort to push for stability in the region. "I want to applaud the Philippines for their courage and clarity in the South China Sea, and their clear-eyed recognition of the challenges we face. We stand shoulder to shoulder in our pursuit of peace and stability in the region,' Hegseth said. 'Our militaries exercised together in Balikatan in April—the largest in a long time with 14,000 troops. This speaks to the longstanding and ironclad relationship between our nations under the Mutual Defense Treaty,' Hegseth also said. China conducts 'combat readiness' patrols in Scarborough despite PH's assertion of sovereignty
China's Southern Theatre navy conducted combat readiness patrols on Saturday around the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, Reuters reported citing Xinhua news agency. China's navy has continuously intensified patrols and surveillance in the surrounding waters and airspace in the area, further strengthening control over the relevant maritime and aerial domains, Xinhua said. EXPLAINER: What is Scarborough Shoal and why is it important? Scarborough Shoal, which is also being claimed by the Philippines, is a triangular coral reef formation which surrounds a lagoon, is famed for its rich waters and marine resources. It is also referred to as Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal. Scarborough Shoal is located 124 nautical miles off Masinloc, Zambales and is considered within the Philippines' 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone, based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis." Last month, the Philippines cited its sovereignty in the area after China called out Manila for its alleged illegal intrusion into Scarborough Shoal. 'These are all part of shaping or malign info operations more likely for their internal audience,' Philippine Navy spokesperson for the Wet Philippines (WPS) Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad said. 'Only the Philippine Navy and other Philippine flagged law enforcement ships have the authority and legal bases to challenge any ship within maritime zones,' he added. Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim.
