Scottish Premiership: VAR rules out 97th-minute Dessers winner for Rangers against Dundee
Update: Date: 20:42 BST 9 August Title: Post Content: Thanks for joining us for another fascinating day. Here's what you might have missed... Ryan Astley's header loops in to put Dundee ahead Update: Date: 20:38 BST 9 August Title: Rangers 'have to make sure aggression' is always there - Martin Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee Rangers manager Russell Martin told BBC Scotland: "I'm disappointed we didn't win the game, disappointed that we conceded a really poor goal. "There was just general lethargy and no speed in the first half. "There wasn't enough intent to disrupt them until we went down to 10 men. The mentality was much better in terms of aggression and speed with and without the ball, but it shouldn't take that. "I'm pleased with the response of the team when we went down to 10 men and we could've won the game in the end but the mentality has to come from the very first kick of the match. "In hindsight I should've made some changes to inject that energy in the team but I explained my decision before the game and maybe I could've changed that now the game is finished. "We're learning about the group all the time, so that's a lesson learnt today. "We have to make sure that aggression is there all the time. "The fans have lacked the success they want for quite some time so I understand the frustration. I didn't get too high on Tuesday so we're not going to get too low today. "We're going to give the fans something to cheer about and we will get better and better. We didn't lose today and we will improve, it'll just take some time. "Nico Raskin was great when he game on, he tackled more than the whole team. "We need at attack everything, it took us too long to attack the game tonight." Update: Date: 20:29 BST 9 August Title: Here's the reaction from Rangers fans... Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee The Old Firm will still be first and second in the league come the end of the season. Neither will run away with anything, though, they simply aren't good enough. Josh Rangers are perhaps starting to realise that their team is not as good as they were making them out to be. A lot of weaknesses are evident and will need sorting before the gap gets even wider. Celtic could arrive at Ibrox seven points clear which would put an enormous amount of pressure on this Rangers team. Martin Shocking performance from Rangers, unable to breakdown their defence, no passion or commitment and poor skill levels. What is the manager doing with these players? If they are unable or unwilling to put in the expected level of performance they should be shown the door. William Sadly Rangers still lack killer forwards. The stats tell it all, plenty of passing and possession but can't score. Craig Update: Date: 20:26 BST 9 August Title: Rangers 'have got to take the positives' Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee Ian McCallFormer Dundee & Rangers midfielder on BBC Sportsound Rangers kept moving forward and moving forward. In terms of the positives, I'm not sure. Rothwell did well driving with the ball. The two wide players are going to be good players, you don't want to ask too much of them too early Antman started really well and Gassama was their main threat today. You've got to take the positives, they were getting beat with 10 minutes to go and they never gave up. Update: Date: 20:25 BST 9 August Title: Your favourite Sportscene moments! "I said to them in the dressing room I could cry for them today because they left every last ounce out there on the pitch. "I'm hugely proud of the preface but it's still only one point and you can get relegated on one point. "We were a big threat on set plays today, we caused them problems, there were a number of really positive aspects about the game. "Today I saw further improvements and we'll work again tirelessly before the Kilmarnock game. "I couldn't be prouder of those group of players today. The most important thing for me is to see progression and I certainly saw that." Update: Date: 20:06 BST 9 August Title: Do Rangers need more egos? Pressley can take a lot of positive from that, Dundee looked dangerous. It's a tough day for Rangers, but Rangers deserve the draw and I think that was a fair result. Update: Date: 19:48 BST 9 August Title: Captain Tav to the rescue again Content: Rangers 1-1 Dundee James Tavernier's penalty rescued a point for Rangers Update: Date: 19:46 BST 9 August Title: Rangers 'deserved draw in the end' Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee Billy DoddsFormer Rangers forward on BBC Radio Scotland The second half had everything. It was nearly perfect for Dundee, it could have been a vital win but it's a great point. Rangers looked like they were playing with a man extra in the second half and it took a man being sent off to get them going but they deserved that draw in the end because they kept going at it. Update: Date: 19:46 BST 9 August Title: Post Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee There were boos at the final whistle, unsurprisingly. There's a European hangover, and then there's whatever Rangers seem to go through. So impressive on Tuesday, to that performance. A performance that for 90 minutes, saw them losing to a beleaguered Dundee side that have already been written off this season. Reaction to come. Update: Date: 19:41 BST 9 August Title: FULL-TIME Rangers 1-1 Dundee Content: Well, Dundee would have taken a point at kick-off. But how close were they to all three points? Ryan Astley's superb header had them in a commanding position, further helped by Nasser Djiga's red card. But Djeidi Gassama, who was lively all afternoon, won a penalty and James Tavernier subsequently converted. There were shades of the loss to Queen's Park here, but they come away with a point. However, it means Rangers have failed to win their first two games in the league for the first time since 1989. Djeidi Gassama is fouled by Drey Wright in the box Update: Date: 19:39 BST 9 August Title: DISALLOWED GOAL Content: Rangers 1-1 Dundee But wait! Cyriel Dessers is offside and VAR rules it out almost instantly! The joy at Ibrox is short-lived.

'No quick fix' as Martin faces familiar Rangers problems
New ownership, a new head coach, nearly a full team of new players, but the man charged with improving fortunes on the pitch has been left insisting there is "no quick fix" after familiar failings reappeared to blight Rangers at the start of the new Martin's rebuilt side remain unbeaten in five games under the former Southampton two of those have been draws in their opening matches in the Scottish Premiership - something the former Rangers defender knows is not good enough for a side expecting to challenge reigning champions Celtic for the for their 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in Champions League qualifying on Tuesday, the same Rangers players were booed off after escaping defeat thanks to a late penalty against a Dundee side many expected to be lambs to the is a familiar story from previous regimes that Martin says will "just take some time" to change, so where does that leave Rangers and their new team boss? 'I should've made some changes' Having finished 17 points adrift of their city rivals last season, Rangers are already a one behind Celtic before Brendan Rodgers' side play their game in hand in Aberdeen on Rangers get through their Euro tie after Tuesday's second leg against Plzen, they will postpone the league match against St Mirren on 24 August to prepare for the play-off tie, which means they could be seven behind by the time Celtic visit Ibrox the following could have been even worse off. It can be argued they were fortunate to escape Motherwell with a point last weekend, while Rangers had to play the final half hour against Dundee with 10 men before captain James Tavernier came off the bench to rescue another with his late spot kick.A "disappointed" Martin admitted: "There was just general lethargy and no speed in the first half."After last week's draw at Fir Park, Martin had questioned the mentality of some of his players, complaining that some "have to drop their ego", and was delighted with the reaction against time, he was "pleased with the response of the team when we went down to 10 men and we could've won the game in the end, but the mentality has to come from the very first kick of the match". Martin accepted some of the blame, admitting: "In hindsight, I should've made some changes to inject that energy in the team, but I explained my decision before the game and maybe I could've changed that now the game is finished."We're learning about the group all the time, so that's a lesson learnt today."BBC pundit and former Rangers striker described them as "Jekyll and Hyde" but pointed out that the same happened under the previous two team bosses - Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson - last season."They would have a brilliant European performance and then fall flat," he told BBC Scotland's Sportscene. "It is something Russell Martin needs to get rid of quickly." 'Maybe not so quickly as everyone wants' Saturday's draw was particularly galling to Rangers fans considering Dundee arrived with a poor start to their season heaping pressure on their new head coach, former Rangers defender Steven who managed just two attempts on goal in their opening Premiership defeat at home to Hibernian, had not beaten Rangers in their previous 17 meetings and had lost their latest 19 visits to passing style being adopted under Martin meant centre-half John Souttar attempted 131 passes in this game, the highest of any player in the opening two weekends, the team overall attempted 709, again the highest of any team, and their 20 goal attempts were highest they still relied on a penalty to rescue a draw and have now failed to win both of their opening two league matches for the first time since could understand the reaction of the home support."The fans have lacked the success they want for quite some time, so I understand the frustration," he said. "I didn't get too high on Tuesday, so we're not going to get too low today."We are at a point now at this club where something needed to change."The ownership has changed, there's a new coaching staff, there's new players, there's hopefully a new way of behaving in the training ground - properly, every single day, regarding standards and what's expected at this football club. So it's not a quick fix and this is not me coming out and making excuses."I think we change the manager from year to year and nothing really changes."So now it's about really changing the culture and the feel of the club day in and day out. That will end up in a good outcome. Good process, good people, will always end up in a good outcome. But maybe not so quickly as everyone wants." More egos or fewer? Former Rangers striker and assistant boss Billy Dodds told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "Russell Martin wants the players to put their egos to bed and concentrate on the football."But I think they need more egos at the club because egos come with top players."It took a man being sent off to get them going, but they deserved that draw in the end because they kept going at it."Like last season, Rangers found it difficult to break down a team domestically who sat back to defend their penalty box at Ibrox - and Thompson gave credit to Pressley."He has had a lot of stick in the early part of the season, but he got his tactics spot on," he Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were two of four players dropped in midweek and were again on the bench against Tavernier came on to prove his goalscoring worth once more, while Martin admitted that "Raskin was great when he game on. He tackled more than the whole team".Meanwhile, centre-half Nasser Djiga is now in line to miss the Old Firm derby through suspension after his last-man red card against leaves Martin with questions over his personnel as matches come thick and Rangers forward Gordon Smith pointed out that Rangers were better when down to 10 men and were unfortunate that Cyriel Dessers was denied a late winner for he was left pondering: "How can they put that kind of performance in Europe and not in the league?"It is a conundrum that Martin is not the first Rangers team boss to have faced.

Don't panic! Scales isn't worried by lack of Celtic transfer activity as Champions League play-off looms
As the Celtic supporters' buses wind their way north this morning, there will be no shortage of angst and exasperation on board. Not for the first time followers of the Scottish champions are more than a little underwhelmed by the summer transfer activity at their club. Combined with the ongoing uncertainty over the future of manager Brendan Rodgers as he enters the final season of his contract, it adds up to a less than joyful mood among the punters. That can't be of any concern to the Celtic players who face Aberdeen at Pittodrie as they continue their defence of the Premiership title. While Liam Scales is appreciative of the fans' current perspective, he is confident their fears will prove unfounded. The Irish defender believes the Celtic squad are already in a robust position which leaves them capable of achieving their ambitions for the campaign ahead, irrespective of whether any more new faces are added before the transfer window closes on September 1. 'I understand that fans can be anxious to get new signings in,' said Scales. 'It's always exciting but these things take time. I don't know what's going on up above but I do know that, after being involved in transfers in the past, it's never as straightforward as fans think. 'I'm definitely comfortable with the squad at the moment. We have strengthened and brought in players. We had good games in pre-season and I think that's shown. 'We have a strong squad and every day on the training pitch the level is constantly improving because those standards are being driven. As a squad, I think all the players feel we're strong and we're just raring to go. 'I think we're in a good place and if one or two more (players) are added before the end of the window, brilliant. If not, we're still really strong.' Scales faces fresh competition for his own place at the heart of Celtic's defence following the season-long loan acquisition of highly-rated England youth cap Jahmai Simpson-Pusey from Manchester City. It's a challenge relished by Scales who began the season alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers in last week's 1-0 home win over St Mirren, with Auston Trusty on the bench. Having become a pretty regular first-team starter in the past two years under Rodgers, Scales is optimistic he can maintain that status. 'At the start of every season and in every transfer window, the manager is always looking to bring in players to strengthen the squad and you can't ever get complacent at this club,' said the 27-year-old. On-loan Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey will add to Celtic's options 'So I think that does help to keep everyone in every position at the top of the game because there's always going to be someone capable who can play in your position. 'It's really good for the dressing room and for the standards of the club, so it's definitely not a negative thing for me. 'The manager is brilliant. I've learned a lot from him and I really enjoy playing for him. 'It's been a really good two past seasons for me, so I'm just hoping to continue that and keep playing for him and keep doing the jobs that he asked me to do. It's been probably the best couple of years of my career and I'm just hoping it continues the way it has.' Scales is keen for Rodgers to extend his tenure at Celtic but remains in the dark over the manager's situation. 'I definitely want him to stay, I really enjoy playing for him, so the longer I can do that the better,' he added. 'But that's out of my hands, I don't know much about it. 'For me, the message from the manager is always clear, you can't question anything, it's always clear, it's always straight to the point. 'I've found that it's either a choice of following his instructions or not and I've been better off doing what he's said and doing what's been asked of me. 'That's helped me a lot because, as a player, it makes it simple. If you know your job, you know your role exactly how the manager wants it to be. 'I think his communication has been brilliant to get his point across, that has helped me improve as a player and I think playing games under him I've become more comfortable in that sense, so I think that would be a massive strength of his.' Scales is eagerly anticipating today's test at Pittodrie where he spent a productive season on loan with Aberdeen in 2022-23. It's Celtic's first meeting with the Dons since losing the Scottish Cup final on penalties to Jimmy Thelin's side at Hampden in May but Scales is adamant that revenge will not be their primary motivation. Celtic captain Callum McGregor in tears after suffering Hampden heartbreak against the Dons 'Listen, I think I speak for everyone here in saying it hurt to lose that game the way we did,' he said. 'But we've had time to get over it in the summer and it's a new season now. We're just excited to do all we can to win as much as we can this year, so that defeat is in the past now. 'At this club, you don't need any more motivation than what we already get week in and week out from the staff to the players. 'There's a massive drive to win and it comes from the fans as well. 'So I don't think we need any more motivation for this game against Aberdeen, it was just a sore one in the cup final. 'It happens in football, you can't win every game, you can't win every trophy, so we're all past it now. But we're ready to start this new season the best possible way.'
