M&S will be over the worst of cyberattack impact by August, says CEO

CNA7 hours ago
LONDON :Marks & Spencer will be over the worst of the fallout from this year's damaging cyberattack by August, its CEO said on Tuesday as shareholders questioned the British retailer over whether it could have prevented the incident that caused a 300 million pound ($413 million) hit to profit.
The April attack on M&S, one of the biggest names on UK shopping streets, forced the group to close its online store for nearly seven weeks and led to empty shelves at its shops during May as automated stock systems were shut down.
"I'm really hoping by August, the majority of this is behind us," CEO Stuart Machin told shareholders at the company's annual meeting, their first chance to press the company publicly on the attack and its consequences.
Asked whether the attack could have been stopped, Chairman Archie Norman said there was always something that could be done and M&S continued to examine the incident.
Machin emphasised how M&S had quadrupled investment in cyber security and trebled the number of colleagues working on protecting its systems over the 12 months before the attack.
"I'm glad we invested then. I'm glad we continue to invest," he said.
One investor asked whether Machin's bonus should be cut because the cyberattack happened under his watch. Norman said the group's philosophy was to adjust incentive pay to reflect shareholder rewards but it was too early to say how that might look this year.
Machin's total pay package in the company's past financial year jumped 39 per cent to 7.1 million pounds.
He said the focus now was on recovery and strengthening training to help staff guard against the type of social engineering that allowed hackers into M&S systems via a third-party contractor.
M&S's online shop is still only partially open but is expected to be fully restored within the next four weeks, Machin said. The company had warned in May that there would be disruption to online services until July.
Internal systems including automation at its Donington logistics warehouse are expected to be back up and running by August, Machin said.

Premier League forms five-year AI partnership with Microsoft

The English Premier League and Microsoft on Tuesday announced a five-year partnership where the cloud giant will infuse its artificial intelligence Copilot into the league's digital platforms to provide quick facts and statistics about matches. Audiences and fans will be able to learn about Premier League clubs, players, matches through an AI companion powered by Microsoft's Copilot which can pull information from over 30 seasons of stats, 300,000 articles and 9,000 videos, they said. AI has strongly resonated with sports leagues and sports entertainment companies as they look to streamline the vast troves of data to attract larger audiences and drive engagement. Spain's LaLiga soccer league, which features clubs such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, also uses AI in match analysis and media production while clubs roll out AI-driven experiences to engage more fans. The Premier League, England's top soccer league, is also migrating its core digital infrastructure to Microsoft Azure to allow for easier AI integration and create a unified platform for the league.

Italy's Leonardo takes a stake in Finland's SSH as European defence M&A inches forward

HELSINKI :Italy's Leonardo will buy a 24.55 per cent stake in Finland's SSH to expand its cybersecurity business, the companies said on Tuesday, in a sign of some progress in European defence consolidation and cooperation. The deal will see the Italian aerospace and defence group become SSH's biggest shareholder, highlighting Leonardo's belief that cybersecurity has become essential to the interconnected multi-domain warfare systems it develops. SSH's chief executive Rami Raulas said the Western defence industry was turning away from national protectionism towards more international cooperation, and that Leonardo's stake was part of that trend. Raulas said large defence groups had begun to establish joint ventures to share costs and risks in projects such as the new combat jet being developed by Britain's BAE Systems, Japan's Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement and Leonardo. "The geopolitical situation and concerns over U.S. investments will further promote this 'European for Europeans' thinking," he told Reuters, alluding to U.S. President Donald Trump's view that the U.S. should be less involved in European defence. Leonardo, which made 18 billion euros ($21.2 billion) in revenue last year, sees double-digit percentage growth in cybersecurity business in the coming years. "The digital and cybersecurity portion will be more embedded in (defence) platforms and will be an increasing portion of the global security offering," Leonardo's head of M&A Giuseppe Panizzardi told a conference call, adding it was fundamental for the company to have the core cyber security technology at hand. The deal, subject to conditions, involves SSH issuing 20 million euros of shares to Leonardo. After completion, SSH's current top investor, Accendo Capital, will hold a 20.87 per cent stake. SSH offers technologies including quantum-safe encryption. The deal is a significant step towards the development of a "Made in Europe" Zero Trust ecosystem, Leonardo said, referring to a cyber security approach in which all users are viewed as potential risks. Man who'll enter workforce at 28 asks if he'll be 'too old to live the Singaporean dream?'

SINGAPORE: A young local Reddit user anxious about his future asked others if he would be 'too old to live the Singaporean dream' if he started working at the age of 27 or 28. In a Monday (Jun 30) post on r/askSingapore, u/GamingAsset explained that he's 23 years old and on national service (NS), which will end next year. He will then head to university at 24 for an IT degree in fintech, which will take another four years. By the time he joins the workforce, he will be 28, and then he will go into cybersecurity, which he originally specialised in. However, if he is able to skip some modules, he may be able to start working at 27. 'The reason why I'm taking a degree is because I feel it is required to climb higher in SG,' he added, but wondered if he started working at 27 or 28, he would be too old to achieve financial stability — his notion of the 'Singapore dream'. He also expressed concern that rising living costs were 'making it even worse' and asked whether he should start working after NS or obtain a degree first. 'Ngl, I'm so lost on what to do,' he added. When commenters asked him to define what he meant by Singapore dream, he wrote, 'Honestly, just have a condo and a nice car.' The post author received a lot of advice from commenters, including one who wrote, 'It would be nicer if your dream isn't solely tied to just a materialistic goal. In the case you own these two, what then? Always have a backup goal, like what is your passion or hobby?' 'Seeing your comments for Singapore dream for you is to have a condo and a nice car… so basically live in debt? Doable if you save and invest well, you can easily achieve it after your degree within five to seven years. You're still young, learn about financial knowledge and invest what you earn in NS,' added another. Other Reddit users sought to reassure him. 'I think you'll be absolutely fine,' wrote a commenter. One added that everybody's timeline is different. 'Some people retire sooner, maybe you'll retire a little bit later. Who knows, maybe after a few years you'll start your own business and make significantly more, and can achieve your condo and nice car dream. Anything is possible here.' Someone who appears to have many more years under their belt wrote, 'You're 23. You don't even realise how young you are. When you hit 30, you will think you're old. You are not. Same with 40. 'You have a long time to go and achieve your dreams and make your money. Don't worry about where you are compared to your peers; we're all on our own journey. You are right where you need to be.' /TISG Read also: 'At the end of the day, it's just a job,' SIA flight attendant gets her life back after quitting dream job due to health issues
