Perak MB: New route needed as East–West Highway concession ends

IPOH: Proposals to build a new highway or an alternative route to address the increasing frequency of accidents along the East-West Highway (JRTB) will be submitted to the federal government.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the highway's 40-year concession had expired, making it critical to review its alignment and overall condition.
"Earlier, I chaired the weekly exco meeting. We discussed at length the fact that this route runs partly through Kelantan and partly through Perak.
"We were informed that the highway's concession has actually expired — it was a 40-year concession that has reached its end and should be reviewed.
"We must remember that it was built during the time of the late Tun Razak (Tun Abdul Razak Hussein), and it was intended to curb the infiltration of communists from Thailand into Pahang," he said.
He told reporters this after closing Perak Export Day at Casuarina Hotel here, today.
The length of the JRTB is 123km, and it was constructed at a cost of RM205 million. It is one of the main routes connecting the western and eastern regions of Peninsular Malaysia (Perak and Kelantan states).
Its construction began in 1967 and it was opened to the public on July 1, 1982.
Saarani said that when JRTB was originally built, the circumstances were different, with no concrete and limited technology.
"It's time to review the alignment and the condition of the road itself. Some parts have already shown the foundation; the soil is exposed. You can't just patch it up — it must be looked at comprehensively," he said.
He said that during the exco meeting, state Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin and state Human Resources, Health and Indian Community Affairs Committee chairman A. Sivanesan were tasked with overseeing the matter.
"We asked Datuk Seri Nizar to prepare an exco paper and forward it to the federal government regarding the highway's infrastructure.
"Datuk Seri Nizar needs to prepare a list of what needs to be done, including the alignment, widening, construction materials, and everything related — such as street lighting," he said.
Saarani said he would also raise the matter personally with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the latter's visit to Lumut on Sunday.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously approved an allocation of RM30 million for repairs but acknowledged that the amount fell short of what was required to properly address the highway's needs.
"I believe the federal government will consider additional funding under the next Malaysia Plan," he said.
On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway.
Thirteen students died at the scene while two others were pronounced dead in hospital.

Perak MB: Malaysians' duty to respect Jalur Gemilang

IPOH: Every Malaysian who understands the meaning of a sovereign and independent country has a duty to respect the Jalur Gemilang flag, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said. Respecting the Jalur Gemilang flag is not a question of race, skin colour, religion or party affiliation, he added. "When we fly the Jalur Gemilang, let's do it properly and with respect, not upside down, don't let it get worn or torn. "If it's put up wrongly, let's correct it together, if there are those who don't understand, let's explain. This is how we show we understand and care," he said during his speech at the Perak-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign here yesterday. He said respecting the Jalur Gemilang flag showed respect for the country as the flag represented the country and stood for its dignity, history and the future of all Malaysians. "Every time it (the Jalur Gemilang flag) flies high, let us cheer with our spirit, and remind ourselves that we are united under one flag, we fight under one banner, and we bear this flag as we continue to blaze ahead to build our future," he added. Saarani reminded the public that all Malaysians need to commemorate the National Day celebrations as a way to live their lives in peace, unity and to build a country with all their strength and capabilities. "Don't let our independence be just a date on the calendar, let it live in our every heartbeat. As we enjoy the gifts of peace, let us be truly grateful and thankful," he added. There were various activities held during the launch since the afternoon, including exhibitions, a Rahmah Sale, a children's costume contest as well as booths offering services from various agencies, along with performances by local artistes, including Zamani Siam. – BERNAMA

GOF eyes more forward bases along Sarawak-Indonesia border ahead of Nusantara capital move

Mohamad Suzrin (centre) fields questions from reporters while Che Ghazali (left) and Lim look on. KUCHING (Aug 14): The General Operations Force (GOF) is proposing to set up more forward operating bases (FOBs) along the Sarawak-Indonesia border in light of Indonesia's capital relocation to Nusantara in Kalimantan. Deputy director of Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (GOF), DCP Dato Mohd Suzrin Mohd Rodhi said the proposals are aimed at strengthening security along the border. 'For Sarawak, one new battalion has been approved ― Battalion 23 in Sri Aman. 'For our upcoming border projects, we have more proposals to set up FOBs to strengthen GOF Sarawak, in line with the relocation of Indonesia's capital to Nusantara. 'Strengthening Sarawak's borders is essential to ensure the public safety in the state,' he told reporters after witnessing the handover of duties between outgoing GOF Sarawak commander between outgoing commander DCP Dr Che Ghazali Che Wang and SAC Lim Bak Phai here today. Mohd Suzrin revealed that the GOF Sarawak Brigade is expected to receive new assets by the end of this year or early next year, following approval from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) top leadership and the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN). The move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the force's capabilities under its reform and rebranding framework, which covers both administrative and logistical aspects. 'The strategic plan at Bukit Aman has been approved by the Director of Logistics, the Director of Internal Security and Public Order, the Inspector-General of Police, and KDN. It is also included in the Malaysia Plan and other border-related projects,' he said. He added that the approval would allow the addition of key assets to boost GOF operations from Tanjung Datu to Limbang, covering the South China Sea coastline to Long Banga, which borders Kalimantan. Among the new assets are FOBs, armoured personnel carriers (APCs), four-wheel drive vehicles, and surveillance drones. 'Some assets, such as robust vehicles, have been delivered in stages since late last year. We are also working closely with the Marine Police and Air Wing to ensure the deployment of personnel to forward posts can be carried out via land or air,' he said.
