Strong multilateral cooperation vital amid global volatility

The Sun27-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing volatility in global affairs demands stronger international cooperation, particularly among nations in the Global South, said world-renowned economist Prof Jeffrey D. Sachs.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit here today, Sachs urged countries to enhance strategic partnerships and resist unilateralism.
Citing China's approach in managing its complex relationship with the United States, particularly in regard to President Donald Trump's massive tariff, he said Beijing had acted with restraint and strategic foresight in response.
He also commended the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, describing it as a symbol of multilateral resilience.
However, Sachs, a professor at Columbia University and President of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Solutions Network, cautioned that unpredictability remains a significant concern.
He said China must prepare by diversifying its economic ties, especially with ASEAN and the GCC.
'It's a clear signal that China places high priority on its relations with ASEAN and the GCC. These are major trade and diplomatic partners,' he said.
The ASEAN-GCC Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, hosted by Malaysia as ASEAN Chair, brought together ASEAN leaders and their counterparts from the Gulf nations and China to deepen political, economic and strategic cooperation amid rising global tensions.
The two summits were held today, after yesterday's 46th ASEAN Summit, which was staged under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.

Asean TVET Council must chart a clear path forward, says Zahid

MELAKA: The Asean TVET Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue (ATC 4th RPD) must chart a clear way forward for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ( pic ). He said the dialogue is about building an Asean-wide ecosystem, one that places TVET at the centre of the region's future, with the Asean TVET Council as the nerve centre that connects policies, aligns standards, and drives shared growth. "First, we must expand TVET access to rural communities, especially youth, because the future cannot be built on urban skills alone. "In Malaysia, GiatMara, a long-standing TVET institution under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and my ministry, has shown what's possible. It has equipped rural youth with skills, and over 50 graduates have become millionaires in various technical fields," he said in his keynote address at the ATC 4th RPD, themed "TVET for Rural and Regional Advancement" here on Wednesday (June 11). Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and representatives from Asean, Germany and Australia. He emphasised that Asean must work to bridge the skills gap by promoting industry-driven, demand-based training programmes. According to him, the region needs a talent pipeline shaped by the needs of factories, plantations, and emerging green industries across Asean, and to achieve this, it requires industries to co-develop training, share apprenticeships, and open cross-border job opportunities. "Thirdly, we must build TVET as a full ecosystem, aligning education, industry, infrastructure, certification and digital access, all guided by data and coordinated by ATC," he said. Ahmad Zahid said that as Asean Chair this year, Malaysia is ready to coordinate and lead. "We propose the formalisation of Malaysia as the Asean TVET Certification and Excellence Hub, and we look forward to the full support of all member states in making this a shared regional legacy," he said. He said TVET is no longer on the sidelines, as it now stands at the very centre of national economic strategies, and in this global race for relevance, skills are the new currency. "Malaysia is not only championing skills development, but also laying the groundwork for Asean to become a TVET powerhouse. "Let us work together to ensure TVET remains accessible, relevant and future-proof for all. Let us commit to building an Asean where no talent is left untapped and no community is left behind. "With the right mix of training, mentorship and market access, TVET becomes a powerful tool for poverty eradication and generational change," he said. – Bernama

Maybank underwrites RM2.5bil of Asia Pacific's largest Islamic syndicated financing for data centres

KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) is underwriting RM2.5 billion of multi-billion ringgit data centre projects in Johor by a Singaporean firm. The RM2.5 billion represents one-third and the largest share of Asia Pacific's biggest syndicated Islamic financing deal for data centres. In a statement, Maybank said it is supporting DayOne Data Centers Singapore Pte Ltd's green data centre projects in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The overall financing involves an onshore ringgit Islamic tranche of RM7.5 billion, complemented by an equivalent US dollar-denominated offshore conventional tranche. Together, the five-year, dual-currency green financing package totals RM15 billion. The funds will be channelled to WG Data Hub Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DayOne, which is developing 'Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified' data centres. LEED is a globally recognised green building certification system that promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly development practices. A consortium of local and international banks is participating in the financing, with Maybank taking on multiple key roles including joint shariah adviser, joint coordinator, mandated lead arranger and bookrunner, joint hedge coordinator and joint green financing and loan coordinator. President and group chief executive officer Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said the landmark transaction represents Maybank's largest Islamic financing commitment to the data centre sector. He added that this highlights the bank's unique position and global leadership in structuring and promoting Islamic and green finance. "As the only homegrown Asean bank with a presence in all 10 key markets, Maybank's regional footprint and insights give us a distinct edge in supporting clients entering the JS-SEZ. "This is backed by establishing a dedicated JS-SEZ desk, and commitment to position the zone as a vibrant regional hub," he said. Headquartered in Singapore, DayOne is a global pioneer in digital infrastructure platforms with a growing presence across both tier-one and emerging markets including Singapore, Johor (Malaysia), Batam (Indonesia), Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Its anchor data centre campuses will be located in Nusajaya and Kempas Tech Parks, both within the JS-SEZ, and is expected to comprise a commanding share of its planned capacity across Asean and Japan.
