Op Shield: Punjab all set for mock drills today
With a statewide civil defence mock drill scheduled for Saturday, Punjab's special director general of police (DGP) Sanjeev Kalra said large-scale emergency situations will be simulated in all districts, starting 6 pm. Kalra said, 'The mock drill is a part of Operation Shield and is being conducted in all districts of states on the Western border.'
Additional deputy commissioner (ADC), urban development, Amritsar, Amit Sareen, said, 'A blackout drill will be conducted in the district from 8 pm to 8.30 pm. Inner areas of the district will be exempted.'
In Ferozepur, deputy commissioner Deepshikha Sharma said sirens will be sounded in the city and cantonment areas between 6 pm and 6.30 pm, followed by a voluntary blackout from 9 pm to 9.30 pm in the same zones.
In Fazilka, DC Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu said the drill will be carried out from 6 pm to 7 pm.
ADC Sareen appealed to residents to switch off all exterior lights, including automatic lights on cameras and lights running on inverters, as soon as the sirens go off at 8 pm.
'If you need to keep lights on inside the house, make sure to use heavy curtains or similar arrangements so that light does not escape outside through windows. During the blackout, the safest place is the ground floor or basement. So, practice sitting in the middle of a room on the ground floor. Try to sit in a place where there is no glass window nearby,' said Sareen.
He added, 'Do not go to the rooftop, street, or any open space during the blackout. Those who are driving on the road at that time should turn off their vehicle's lights — whether it's a car, scooter, or motorcycle — and pull over to the side of the road'.
Authorities of all three districts assured residents that it is a routine preparedness exercise aimed at enhancing public awareness and readiness in case of emergencies and said that there is no reason to panic.

Punjab Police dismantle Babbar Khalsa-linked terror module in Amritsar, two arrested
In a major success in the ongoing crackdown on Pakistan's ISI-backed terror networks, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police have successfully dismantled an extortion module linked to the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). The module, allegedly orchestrated by BKI operative Jeevan Fauji, has been neutralised following the arrest of two key associates. Karajpreet Singh, a resident of Verowal, Tarn Taran, and Gurlal Singh alias Harman from Goindwal Sahib, Tarn Taran, were apprehended during a targeted operation. Both men were reportedly operating under direct instructions from Jeevan Fauji, who remains an active BKI member. 'Preliminary investigation reveals that Jeevan Fauji, an active BKI member, was orchestrating an extortion racket targeting individuals in Punjab's border districts. He had provided a .30 bore pistol to Karajpreet and Gurlal and directed them to fire at a furniture shop in the Amritsar area. This firing incident was part of an extortion attempt, with Jeevan Fauji demanding ransom from a relative of the shop owner based in Canada,' Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, IPS, stated in a post on X. 'Based on the disclosure of accused Gurlal Singh, Harman, a police team took him along for the recovery of the weapon used in the offence,' the DGP further noted. However, during the weapon recovery operation, Gurlal allegedly attempted to fire at the police party, resulting in a swift response from the officers. 'In the exchange, Gurlal sustained a bullet injury to his left leg. He was immediately shifted to Civil Hospital, Amritsar, for treatment,' Yadav added. An FIR has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are focusing on identifying and arresting the remaining members of the module and fully dismantling the network. Punjab Police reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order: 'Punjab Police remains steadfast in its mission to crush terror modules and ensure peace and harmony in the region.'

Rajasthan Officers Attacked By Bees During 'Operation Shield' Mock Drill
A blackout was observed at different times from 8 pm in the entire state, along with the districts bordering Pakistan in Rajasthan. There was a blackout in different cities from 15 minutes to 25 minutes. During this time, people switched off the lights of their homes, shops and offices. People stopped the vehicles on the road by switching off the headlights. During the blackout, there was complete darkness at some places, while at other places the whole city was lit except for a fixed area. Before the blackout at 8.15 pm in Jaipur from Khatipura Road to Hasanpura, a mock drill of the air strike was carried out under Operation Shield. During the mock drill at Kalisindh Dam in Jhalawar, a hypothetical situation of a drone attack was created. During this, a real emergency situation arose on the spot. In fact, many officers and employees, including the Collector-SP, present on the dam, were attacked by bees. All the officers ran away to save their lives. A real-time mock drill was conducted on the ground of a government school located on Khatipura Road in Jaipur. This mock drill was of a drone attack and a missile attack on the Army's residential colony. Jaipur collector Dr Jitendra Soni said, "Reached the spot immediately on the information of the attack. It was simulated that nine villagers were passing through this field. During this, one person died in the attack, while eight people were injured. During the mock drill, rehearsals were also done to rescue people trapped on the roof. During this, people climbed on the roof and shouted for help. After this, people's lives were saved with the help of a crane." NCC cadets also played a role in the mock drill. A mock drill of an air strike was conducted at Kalyan Medical College in Sikar. Four explosions were simulated here. As soon as the information was received, the fire brigade, ambulance, civil defence team and police reached the spot immediately. During this, a small girl got scared, who was taken care of by women police personnel. After the blast, many people were stuck on the 5th floor, who were brought down with the help of ropes. They were taken out. Before the blackout, the police team informed the people in the colonies. In Ajmer, a blackout was observed from 8 a.m. to 8.30 pm. During this, the government lights on the streets were switched off. People switched off the lights in their houses. The market was closed during the blackout in Barmer.

Before his appointment to the DGP post, Krishna had the double charge of the directorate general (DG) of vigilance and the recruitment and promotion board. Lucknow: Rajeev Krishna, a 1991 batch IPS officer, has been appointed the acting director general of police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, the fifth in a row. Reacting to the appointment, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav hit out at the Yogi government for not appointing a permanent DGP. 'UP gets another acting DGP today. While leaving, he (Prashant Kumar) must be thinking about what he got and who kept proving every wrong to be right. If he had been loyal to the Constitution and the law instead of the person, he would at least have got respect in his own eyes,' former chief minister Yadav said in a post on X. 'Now it remains to be seen whether the new person is able to free himself from the web that he has woven in the entire state and deliver justice impartially, or else he too becomes a victim of politics by getting trapped in the same web.' Earlier, the Centre had the final say, and the state had to send a list of eligible candidates to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which would recommend the name. However, despite the rules being framed last year, they had not been executed till now. Explaining the delay, sources said state government functionaries were discussing the repercussions of the change in rules with legal experts. Furthermore, the state leadership was trying not to increase its rift with the Centre anymore. In the past few years, there has been a growing confrontation between the Yogi government and the Centre over the selection of the DGP. Former DGP Prashant Kumar was the fourth acting DGP consecutively in the past two years. The last permanent DGP in the state was Mukul Goel, who was removed three years ago on the grounds of indiscipline. Since then, five acting DGPs have been appointed, which also included D.S. Chauhan, R.K. Vishwakarma and Vijay Kumar. SSP Agra—most impactful posting Hailing from Gautam Buddha Nagar, Krishna joined the Indian Police Service in 1991. He has previously been posted as superintendent (SP) and then as senior superintendent (SSP) and has been in Firozabad, Etawah, Mathura, Fatehgarh, Bulandshahr, Noida, Agra, Lucknow and Bareilly. In 2007, when the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) was formed in Uttar Pradesh, Krishna became its first deputy inspector general (DIG) and led the force. Sources in UP police said that, apart from the recruitment board posting, one of the most impactful chapters of Krishna's career was his tenure as SSP Agra in 2004, when he led crackdowns against notorious kidnapping gangs operating in the ravines. Krishna's wife, Meenakshi Singh, is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officer and is currently posted as an income tax commissioner in Lucknow. Additionally, his brother-in-law, Rajeshwar Singh, was a joint director in ED and is now the BJP MLA from Sarojini Nagar assembly segment.
