The schedule makers presented the Yankees with a gift this week. An antidote to their struggles. A magic elixir.
Coming off a disappointing series against the Astros, engulfed in an extended dismal stretch that has seen them play their way from the top of the AL East to nearly out of a wild-card spot, luck would have it that the stripped-down Minnesota Twins would be visiting The Bronx starting Monday night.
Suddenly, their woes disappeared. The Twins, the personal punching bag for the Yankees over the past two decades, have that effect on them.
They played their part to a tee, as they have since 2002. The Twins only managed two solo homers off Will Warren in 6 ²/₃ strong innings and the Yankees did enough offensively for a much-needed 6-2 victory, improving to an almost incomprehensible 124-44 (including the playoffs) against the AL Central foe since said year.
The Yankees have beaten them eight straight times and are 30-5 against them at the Stadium since 2015.

Considering how the Yankees have played for a while, entering the night 11 games under .500 since June 12, they'll take wins any way they can get them. The four-run margin was their largest in a victory since an 11-0 rout of the Cubs on July 11. That was before the All-Star break.
So consider this a minor step in the right direction, a start to a soft portion of the schedule the Yankees really need to take advantage of. Warren fanned five of the first six Twins he faced, Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton all went deep in the first three innings, and the result was never really in doubt.
Warren continued his recent run of strong work. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts. In that span, he has a 2.84 ERA. Warren needed just 50 pitches to get through the first four innings of one-hit ball, and became the first Yankees starter to complete six innings since he himself went six on July 30.

It wasn't until Warren's 65th pitch, a slider that got too much of the plate, that the Twins scored. Byron Buxton went deep with two outs in the sixth inning for his 24th homer of the year.
An inning later, Trevor Larnach went yard, and Warren was pulled in favor of Luke Weaver. Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge added run-scoring singles to extend the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

The Twins never threatened again, as the Yankees cruised to a rare stress-free victory.
There were a number of positives, from Warren's sterling effort to Judge coming through with a key hit late after struggling since coming off the IL.

But perhaps the biggest one was this: Two more games against the Twins.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit back-to-back home runs, and Ryan Pepiot went 6 1/3 innings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Athletics 7-4 on Monday night. Lowe's 23rd and Caminero's 33rd home runs of the season stretched a 6-1 Rays lead in the seventh inning that was cut to three in the bottom half. Lowe added a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Pepiot (8-9) pitched six innings of one-run ball before allowing the three-run shot to Tyler Soderstrom in the seventh. Shea Langeliers hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Zach Neto hits 2 homers, Angels overcome Shohei Ohtani's 42nd HR for a 7-4 win over the Dodgers

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Zach Neto hit his eighth leadoff home run of the season and added another homer in the sixth, and the Los Angeles Angels overcame Shohei Ohtani's 42nd homer during an eighth-inning rally in their 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Mike Trout had a two-run single and Yoán Moncada drove in two runs for the Angels, who are improbably 4-0 in the Freeway Series this season. The defending World Series champion Dodgers' lead over San Diego in the NL West also slipped to just one game for the first time since June 14 with the Padres' win over San Francisco. The Dodgers trailed 7-0 before Ohtani homered in his third straight game, driving a solo shot to right in the eighth inning. Ohtani has a 10-game hitting streak in August, and he has four homers among his nine hits in the Dodgers' last five games. Max Muncy followed with a three-run homer to slash the Angels' big lead, but Connor Brogdon ended the eighth before Kenley Jansen earned his 22nd save. Angels right fielder Gustavo Campero got injured while chasing Muncy's drive into the short porch. He was taken off the field on a cart. José Soriano (8-9) allowed only two singles and two walks while throttling the Dodgers over six scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Neto reached base five times during his third career multihomer game, starting when he crushed Yoshinobu Yamamoto's first career pitch in Anaheim for his 18th homer. Yamamoto (10-8) had one of the poorest outings in his solid season, yielding six runs on six hits and five walks while failing to get out of the fifth inning. Bryce Teodosio and Neto scored in the fifth on Trout's bases-loaded single. Moncada and Campero added RBIs while the Angels chased Yamamoto. Key stat The Dodgers are 10-12 since the All-Star break. Up next The Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan (3-2, 3.00 ERA) will start against Angels reliever Victor Mederos, who will be the opener in a bullpen game Tuesday after Tyler Anderson was ruled out with a back injury. ___

Colson Montgomery hits his 10th home run — all since the All-Star break — in Chicago White Sox loss

Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery crushed another home run. But Spencer Torkelson hit a go-ahead solo home run off the left-field foul pole in the ninth inning and the Detroit Tigers held on to defeat the Sox 2-1 on Monday in front of 16,054 at Rate Field. The game featured a 63-minute rain delay during the top of the ninth. Montgomery homered for the second straight game. His liner to right leading off the fifth just remained fair for a game-tying home run. 'I feel great,' Montgomery said. 'I just feel like each day is a new opportunity for something to happen. Some nights aren't your night and some nights are. I feel like in this game, what I'm learning now, you have to try to stay as consistent as you can and as neutral as you can. 'You can't get too caught up in the highs and the lows. Every single night you are going to get your other team's best. It's business and you are trying to win games. I feel good.' He has 10 home runs, all since the All-Star break. 'I wouldn't really say I'm surprised by any of it,' Montgomery said. 'You just never know what's really going to happen until you get here in the big leagues and you face pitching. I'm pretty happy with how things are going right now. It just comes down to what me, (hitting coach) Marcus (Thames) and (assistant hitting coach) Joel (McKeithan) are doing in the cage every single day. Staying consistent in my routines. 'The biggest thing is not trying to do too much.' What Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable is focusing on during the final 2 months of the seasonThe Sox were in position to draw even thanks to solid contributions from the bullpen. Tyler Alexander allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five in 4 1/3 scoreless innings following opener Elvis Peguero, who allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. 'There was the one run but he did a really nice job,' manager Will Venable said of Peguero. 'We were going to go batter by batter after that first inning. There were a couple spots where we could have dropped Alexander in but that was the best-case scenario for us with Peguero. He did an amazing job.' Venable added: 'Tyler was outstanding. Another outing where we need coverage. We needed someone to step up and give us quality. And again, he stepped up and did that for us.' Peguero said through an interpreter of his Sox debut, which was also his first MLB start and first start at any level since Aug. 20, 2019, against Johnson City with the rookie league Pulaski Yankees: 'Ever since I knew I was starting today, my focus was on taking this game as a reliever. I wasn't thinking anything else about it.' Steven Wilson and Grant Taylor each pitched one scoreless inning. 'As far as today, those guys did an outstanding job and kept us in the game,' Venable said of the relief work. 'We couldn't muster anything offensively and they gave us a chance there throughout the game. We're in a tough spot bullpen-wise, we needed to get outs and they did that tonight.' Montgomery robbed Wenceel Pérez of a single, leaping to make a catch to begin the ninth. '(Reliever Brandon) Eisert, he's pitching his butt off,' Montgomery said. 'It was a late situation in the game, tried to stop their momentum and didn't really see it go in my glove. Just went in my glove.' Torkelson then hit a 1-0 fastball from Eisert for the go-ahead home run. The game was paused because of rain with two outs in the top of the ninth. It concluded with Cam Booser throwing one strike in the top of the ninth for a strikeout and then the Sox getting retired in order on a strikeout and two grounders in the bottom of the ninth. While the Sox came up short, they continued to see Montgomery's progression. He is the third rookie in Sox history to hit 10 home runs over his first 32 career games, joining José Abreu in 2014 (12) and Zeke Bonura in 1934 (10). 'He continues to have good at-bats and put himself in a really good position to hit the ball hard,' Venable said. 'It seems like every day he's doing something positive at the plate. Certainly doing positive things defensively. Really nice to see a young guy go out there and perform like he's performing. 'Just continues to throw out great performances night after night.'
