Uber Intercity grows to 3,000 routes; unveils premium Motorhomes service

Uber has expanded its Intercity services across India by nearly 50 per cent, now covering over 3,000 point-to-point routes. Company executives expect this growth trajectory to continue in the next calendar year as demand for intercity travel picks up.
"We are growing roughly in the range of 40 to 50 per cent year-on-year. I think that's the kind of growth we continue to anticipate for the years to come, and hopefully even break that record," said Shweta Mantri, head of rider verticals at Uber India and South Asia, speaking on the sidelines of a company event in New Delhi on Thursday.
Among the most travelled Intercity corridors over the past year were Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Agra, Bangalore–Mysore, Lucknow–Kanpur, and Ahmedabad–Vadodara—especially around long weekends and holidays. Fridays emerged as the most preferred departure day, with travellers choosing early morning hours or the mid-afternoon lull (2 PM–3 PM) to beat traffic.
To further accelerate adoption of Intercity services, Uber announced the pilot of a premium offering—Motorhomes—in Delhi's National Capital Region. The one-month pilot, starting August 7, is aimed at travellers seeking luxury and comfort for short getaways.
Bookings for Motorhomes will open on August 4 and can be made through the Uber Intercity or Uber Reserve options. The vehicle can accommodate four to five riders and comes equipped with premium amenities including a television, lavatory, microwave, and mini-refrigerator—effectively creating a private lounge-on-wheels.
"Our objective is to bring this elevated experience to life for our consumers, see how the pilot goes, what the demand is, and other factors," said Mantri. She noted that given the nature of the offering, pricing will be higher than Uber's regular services.
The pilot coincides with the onset of India's festive season and a string of long weekends—periods during which rider interest typically spikes. Uber expects strong demand around Diwali, Holi, Eid, and the summer wedding season.
With Intercity travel on the rise and premium services being tested, Uber aims to enhance its platform with both scale and variety, catering to budget-conscious travellers and those seeking curated experiences.

'Believe me, we're still working on a week we deserve to be off. But now they want us in office. We've saved leaves and WFHs all year for this,' she added. The situation turned quickly got heated, which led to a 'crying sobbing angry argument' with the user's senior manager as she asserted 'I HAD TO GO HOME. It's the ONE time I get to.' A resolution only came when another colleague from the same city as the original poster decided to cancel their leaves to come into the office since they'll suffer the least damage. 'So technically this wasn't resolved, someone just sacrificed,' she said. The reddit post ended with a comment on corporate empathy as the user stated, 'Your company truly never cared, never will. Always knew this, but some days are truly frustrating.' Most of the comments on the post emphasised with the user, while some others shared their personal experiences of working with a western MNC. A Reddit user said, 'Well, that's pretty much how things work in Indian MNCs. I do empathize with you, but unfortunately, you wont find any respite here. Everything is 24/7 and #1 priority.' Another user mirrored this thought and said, 'It is not you, it is your managers. I am Indian working in Germany. Our project has a small team in Pune, and the managers always keep proudly proclaiming in the meetings that his team is so dedicated that they can work on weekend and holidays as well.' Among those negative experiences, some users had a completely different story about working with an MNC. A user claimed that not all workplaces are toxic, further reiterating 'I work with a small performance marketing shop, the client is based in Europe, for some reason I can't get into to maintain secrecy, they have the entire first half of August off. They told us no one at their end is going to be working till the 20th atleast. We decided to do the same.'

Expansion efforts are ongoing, with the cooperative reaching out to other cooperative bodies to widen its driver base. The ride-hailing service will function through a single app nationwide. A tender has been issued to finalise a technology partner for developing the app, which is expected to be ready by December. 'We will finalise the technology partner in a few days,' Gupta said, as quoted by PTI. To drive national-level marketing and strategic planning, the cooperative has engaged a technology consultant and the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The Bharat taxi service will adopt a cooperative pricing model aimed at affordability for customers while improving driver incomes. Eight cooperatives join hands to launch 'Bharat' taxi service, onboard 200 drivers
India's cooperative sector is set to challenge ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber with the launch of a taxi service under the brand Bharat by the end of this year, backed by Rs 300 crore authorised capital and having already onboarded 200 drivers across four states. The Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd, registered on June 6, represents a consortium of eight prominent cooperatives, including the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). Last month, Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had indicated that a cooperative taxi service will be launched by the end of 2025, while unveiling a comprehensive cooperative policy for the sector. "The key objective is to ensure better returns to drivers and provide quality, safe and affordable services to passengers," NCDC Deputy Managing Director Rohit Gupta told PTI. The venture operates without any government stake, being entirely funded by the participating cooperatives. The founding members also include Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL). Around 200 drivers have already joined the cooperative, with 50 each from Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The cooperative is actively reaching out to other cooperative organisations to expand the network, he said. The cooperative has floated a tender to select a technology partner for developing the ride-hailing application. "We will finalise the technology partner in a few days," Gupta said, adding that the app is expected to be ready by December. A technology consultant and IIM-Bangalore have been roped in to formulate the marketing strategy for the pan-India platform, which will operate as a single app across the country. The service will adopt a cooperative pricing model, with membership drives currently underway to scale operations. The move comes as the cooperative sector seeks to leverage its collective strength to compete with established private players in the rapidly growing ride-hailing market.
