Rachel Zegler prepares for comeback with first movie since Snow White flop as fans share mixed reactions

Daily Mail30-04-2025
is set to star in her first movie since Snow White bombed in the box office.
Though the Disney remake has been widely considered a flop, the 23-year-old actress has already lined up her comeback and will be starring opposite Marisa Tomei, 60, of My Cousin Vinny fame in her next movie role.
In the upcoming comedy-drama titled She Gets It From Me, Zegler will play the daughter of the Oscar-winning actress's wild, unruly and free-spirited character, according to the synopsis reported by Variety on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, her onscreen adversary Gal Gadot, who played the Evil Queen in Snow White, is also moving on from the controversies as she was seen filming for her new thriller film over the weekend.
She Gets It From Me 'follows Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother Charlotte (Tomei)', per the outlet.
'Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect after being estranged.'
The synopsis reads: 'YouTube is packed with tearful family reunions, but nobody films the messy aftermath.'
The forthcoming film, directed by Julia von Heinz, is based on a true story.
Since the reporting, many fans have reacted to Zegler's new project following her portrayal of the famed princess in the live-action remake of Disney's Snow White.
The movie, which saw Zegler star opposite Gal Gadot's Evil Queen, continues to tank at the box office and has been branded as the worst-performing film in Disney's history.
Many of Zegler's fans showed their support for the actress as they praised her for staying 'booked and busy.'
The Snow White remake was heavily hyped up until its release, however, it has faced a string of controversies after Zegler's controversial comments about the original cartoon film.
In 2022, she called the original movie dated and 'weird' and compared the prince to a 'stalker.'
Zegler has also come under fire for her political comments, which fans speculated had sparked a real-life feud between her and her co-star Gadot as they did not do interviews together amid the limited press tour.

Since then, they have not directly addressed the controversies but the film was still panned by critics and fans, with poor office performance worldwide.
As Zegler and her co-stars prepare to move on past the drama and controversies, many fans are skeptical about whether or not their forthcoming projects will do well.
After news of Zegler's new movie project was revealed, social media was alight with both fans and trolls sharing their mixed reactions to the casting.
About Zegler and her future co-star Tomei's mother-daughter comedy drama, one person tweeted on X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: 'That actually sounds like it could be fun.'
However, there were also many people were not as faithful after how badly Snow White was panned by critics and fans alike. An X user tweeted that they were 'waiting for the flop lol.'
'She still getting roles after Snow White is insane lol,' another person wrote about Zegler.
'There's no way someone hired Rachel Zegler,' one person wrote in agreement. 'I just don't believe it.'

ALISON BOSHOFF: Terence Stamp's last role: How the Sixties star made a dementia documentary at his own care home

The iconic British actor Terence Stamp – who died at the weekend aged 87 – made one final filmed performance. Sources disclose that the actor was in a care home in Bickley, south-east London, in his final months. And earlier this summer, he and his family undertook some filming in the gardens. I'm told they were making a documentary about his amazing life story – he was nominated for an Oscar for his first film role, in Billy Budd; and went on to be synonymous with Swinging London. The doc is also understood to be about Alzheimer's and its effects. It's not clear when it might come out, and his representatives have not returned requests for comment about the project. Stamp never had children, and was married only once (briefly), when he was 64. However, he is survived by two younger brothers and a sister, and had a large extended family including nephews, nieces, and their children. They said in a statement on Sunday: 'He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time.' Born in Stepney, east London, in 1938, Stamp went to grammar school in Plaistow and took a job in an advertising agency, but longed for a life as an actor after seeing Gary Cooper in the film Beau Geste. He trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and then went on the repertory circuit, sharing a flat in London with Michael Caine. Instant stardom came after the 1962 film Billy Budd, based on the Herman Melville novella. He dated actress Julie Christie – the pair were immortalised in The Kinks' Waterloo Sunset ('Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station, every Friday night') – and also had an affair with model Jean Shrimpton, but he fell out of fashion. As he said: 'When the 1960s ended, I just ended with it. I remember my agent telling me, 'They are all looking for a young Terence Stamp.'' He travelled to India and lived in a spiritual retreat, before receiving a message in 1976 addressed to 'Clarence' Stamp, offering him the part of General Zod in Superman. Superman and the sequel, Superman II, put him back in the game and he went on to appear in western Young Guns; Neil Jordan's The Company Of Wolves and, in 1994, The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert. He played Bernadette, a transgender woman. He was also in Star Wars Episode I: the Phantom Menace in 1999 and was last seen alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in Edgar Wright's Last Night In Soho, in 2021. In 1995 he was nominated for a Bafta for A Song For Marion, 32 years after being nominated for a 'Best Newcomer' Bafta. Stamp was known for his frankness and said: 'I'm always amazed there's another job. I've done crap, because sometimes I didn't have the rent. But when I've got the rent, I want to do the best I can.' Red hot and vegan – why Pam's pickles are a very personal recipe even Meghan can't copy Is Pamela Anderson taking a little bite back at Meghan? Many were convinced the Duchess of Sussex copied the former Baywatch star's recipes and look in the first series of With Love, Meghan, released just a week after Pamela's own show, Cooking With Love. The executive producer of Pammie's series Jesse Fawcett said tactfully: 'We take pride in planting the first seeds – creating original, distinctive programming that audiences love – and it's a compliment to see our work with Ms Anderson resonate so strongly.' Now Anderson has launched a pickle brand via ritzy Californian company Flamingo Estate... which Meghan once wanted to work with. In this case, ALL proceeds (a jar costs $38) are going to the California Wildlife Center charity. The brand announced: 'After months of development with Pam in the Flamingo Estate kitchen, we're thrilled to announce that we've got a couple hundred jars of the most delicious pickles we've ever tasted. The secret to Pamela's Pickles is an award-winning recipe that was passed down to her by her great-aunt Vie. 'The delicious base is packed with rose, dill, mustard, and garlic – the perfect partner for the signature flavors of Flamingo Estate: pink peppercorns, Guajillo chili, and smoky sea salt. 'Like the legendary icon whose name they share, Pamela's Pickles are both hot and vegan.' Zendaya's in training to cash in Zendaya has enormous commercial clout – both on the screen and on a billboard. The actress, who is 28, is probably the most bankable young A-lister in Hollywood and is already a 'brand ambassador' for Lancome perfume, Louis Vuitton fashion and Bulgari jewellery – plus the Swiss athletics brand On. And now, perhaps inevitably given the money she just can't stop making, she is dipping a toe into the world of designing. Zendaya, who is engaged to British actor Tom Holland, has released a pair of trainers, designed with her stylist Law Roach, for On. The company confirms that she will shortly release a collection of sportswear, which she designed. Cathy and Heathcliff get Saltburned Bouncy director Emerald Fennell has given Wuthering Heights the Saltburn treatment: adding nuns, crotches, erections and more to her very sexy, very gothic, very bondage film adaptation of Emily Bronte's beloved novel. The movie, which completed filming earlier this year, features two Aussies – Margot Robbie (right) and Jacob Elordi – as Cathy and Heathcliff. I hear she is planning to take a leaf out of the Saltburn film with the music as well, which will feature modern-day 'bangers', even though the story – published in 1847 – has not been transposed to the modern day. Saltburn, which Fennell wrote and directed, made a renewed hit of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder On The Dancefloor. And sources suggest that gothic pop will be where it's at for this film, too, which is to be released by Warner Bros on Valentine's Day next year. Sadly – and you might think stupidly – there are no plans to use Kate Bush's 1978 megahit Wuthering Heights. Representatives for Bush and the film did not comment. The Hunt For Gollum is taking shape. Andy Serkis, who played the tortured creature in the original Peter Jackson films, will direct and star in this big budget movie, due to begin shooting in New Zealand next spring, with Jackson producing. Speaking at fans convention For Love Of Fantasy in London at the weekend, Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit trilogies, said: 'I hear there's going to be another movie set in Middle Earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum and it's all about Gollum.' He added: 'I'll tell you two secrets about the casting – there's a character called Frodo, and there's another called Gandalf.' Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in the LOTR trilogy, was in the room for the event. The film is set just before that story starts, and features Aragorn hunting for Gollum in order to keep the location of the rings of power secret. It's thought the original actors will return, using digital de-ageing technology. Dame Prue Leith complains ITV's budgets are now so tiny they don't even run to extra food – or reshoots – for her Cotswolds Kitchen show, which is filmed in her own home. 'There's so little money for this that if I make a mess – if I turn out a cake and it comes up cracked – I say, 'Ah, well, what you do is get some icing sugar to cover it up.'' So, like real life then. 'It's actually hugely popular,' she added. 'I should make more deliberate mistakes, because people love it when they learn how to fix it.' James Norton's ITV hit baby-swap thriller Playing Nice ended in the apparent death of baddie daddy Miles. But actor James McArdle, who played the villain, hints there could be a second series, and that he might have survived being shoved off a Cornish cliff. McArdle said: 'My character could well have survived. I know for a fact he was a very good swimmer.' All talk and no trousers for Sydney Is Sydney Sweeney's hot streak over? Her controversial advert (slogan: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans') may have put American Eagle denim in the headlines. But research suggests punters lured to their website clicked right out again, without buying. CARMA, a media intelligence specialist, says search interest for the brand jumped to a five-year high, thanks to the fuss over 'supremacist' vibes in the ad (were they talking about jeans... or genes?) and reports Sweeney registered as a Republican voter. However, the advert did not translate that into sustained interaction or sales. CARMA says page visits to the website fell 6 per cent month-on-month, visit duration dropped by 8 per cent — and bounce rates (visitors who leave a website after looking at only one page) rose 4 per cent, while in-store footfall declined for two weeks following the ad's release. Consultant Orla Graham says although the ad generated a cultural conversation, its commercial outcome was another matter. Speaking of which, Sweeney's arthouse film Americana was released last week and there was no lightning strike of interest there, either. It took just $500,000 on 1,100 screens in the US.

BBC shares major update on Doctor Who future amid hiatus

Doctor Who will return with or without the extra funding from Disney, the BBC has now confirmed whilst the series is on hiatus following the departure of Ncuti Gatwa Doctor Who will return with or without the extra funding from Disney, BBC bosses confirmed yesterday. ‌ The sci-fi show is currently on a hiatus following the end of the two-year deal with Disney, which culminated with the departure of Ncuti Gatwa in the title role. ‌ Crushing rumours that the show would not return if Disney's huge cash injection did not return, the BBC's new head of content Kate Phillips said: "Rest assured Doctor Who is going nowhere. Disney has been a great partnership and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year." ‌ Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival Kate, who is just two months into her job, stressed: 'With or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC." The uncertainty around the series has been caused by Disney's continuing reluctance to commit to either renewing its funding deal with the BBC - or pull out. ‌ But show creator Russell T Davies has indicated he's already working on scripts for the next series, and also for another one after that. Later in the session, the BBC's drama controller Lindsay Salt said she had 'no update' in terms of timings " on Doctor Who but said that information would be made public as soon as it was possible. Agreeing with Kate, she said the BBC commitment to Doctor Who as one of its biggest brands was water-tight, adding that the show was "hugely important to us"." ‌ Now Doctor Who fans have the spin-off show, The War Between the Land and the Sea, which expected to start around Christmas. Disney reportedly injected around £100million into Doctor Who, which gave a a significant boost to the show's production budget, allowing for CGI use of dinosaurs and other stunts. ‌ There is still a chance that the deal will be renewed, or that BBC Studios will find another partner to join forces with. In the session about the BBC, Kate also said the corporation 'acted fast' after misconduct allegations against former MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace. And she urged anyone who felt they had grievances to air against top talent to come forward, stressing that they would be taken seriously. 'No one is irreplaceable,' she said. On MasterChef, she said she'd acted on the information she'd had in 2019. 'So there were two complaints. I dealt with them. I acted on them fast. I think I acted responsibly. I left him in no doubt of the expected behaviour that we expect at the BBC, if you like. I stand by the actions I took at the time with the knowledge that I had. Other allegations didn't come to us until much later, sort of at the end of 2023, and at that point we did act, and we acted fast.' Wallace was dropped from the series after multiple claims of inappropriate language and behaviour against him were upheld. Later his co-host John Torode was also dismissed after a complaint over his 'racist language' was upheld.

Disney desperate to win back Gen Z men following 'woke' flops like Snow White

Disney is reportedly desperate to win back young male viewers. According to Variety, 'leadership at Walt Disney Studios' are pressuring Hollywood creatives to find new movies and 'original concepts' that will appeal to Gen Z men aged between 13-28. The push comes as superhero movies from the Disney-owned Marvel have seen a huge decline in recent years. Other male-skewing fare from Disney, like 2023's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, flopped at the box office. Meanwhile rival studio Warner Bros. has recently produced a number of box office hits for young men, including Superman and A Minecraft Movie, which has grossed close to a billion dollars. Disney suffered a huge blow this year after the critical and commercial failure of Snow White. The big budget fairytale, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, was savaged by critics. In addition, the film faced severe backlash for its 'woke' changes, and leading lady Zegler's brazen comments about the original animated film is based off of while promoting the film. While Snow White ignited a plethora of controversies earlier this year, one major criticism from fans was how filmmakers transformed the dwarves into computer-generated 'magical creatures.' The decision angered actors with dwarfism, who blasted Disney's reliance on CGI as 'absurd' and 'discriminating.' The remake of the classic 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs film failed to land rave reviews from both fans and movie critics alike. Daily Mail's Brian Viner gave Snow White two out of five stars, calling it a 'painfully muddle-headed affair' and 'pallid reimagining,' but admitted Zegler 'plainly has oodles of talent.' 'Disney's contorted attempts not to offend anyone have somehow managed to offend everyone,' Viner noted. Meanwhile, The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw gave Snow White one out of five stars and called it a 'pointless' and 'exhaustingly awful reboot' with 'tiresome pseudo-progressive additions that tie the whole thing in knots.' 'Where other movies are playfully reimagining the backstories of famous villains, this one plays it straight, but with carefully curated revisionist tweaks,' Bradshaw wrote. 'Those otherwise estimable performers Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot are now forced to go through the motions, and they give the dullest performances of their lives.' Despite Snow White's failure, Disney has still produced a number of blockbuster hits over the last year. Lilo & Stitch crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, as did Moana 2. They're also predicted to bank more billion-dollar hits later this year with Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Disney is also enjoying a moderate hit with his new Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday. The movie, led by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, has already grossed double its budget at the box office.
