KUCHING (April 26): Sarawakian students pursuing higher education at public and private institutions across Malaysia can apply for the state's Special Financial Assistance (BKK) starting this May 1.
State Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, encouraged all eligible students to seize this opportunity, which offers RM1,200 annually — disbursed in two instalments of RM600 each semester via SPay Global.
'This assistance is open to all students regardless of economic background. No other state has implemented such an initiative. The application period is open from May 1 to June 1, 2025.
'For those who miss the first application round, another opportunity will be opened in September, specifically for students enrolling later this year,' he told a press conference at Wisma Adenan at Yayasan Sarawak here today.
He was accompanied by Yayasan Sarawak director Datu Mohamad Junaidi Mohidin and chief assistant director of the Scholarships, Programmes, and Assistance Division, Zamahari Saidi.
Dr Annuar said that the initiative is expected to benefit around 60,000 Sarawakian students.
It will be officially launched by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on June 28, and approved applicants will receive their first disbursement immediately after the launch.
To qualify, applicants must be Sarawakians — meaning at least one parent or guardian is a Sarawakian — and must be enrolled full-time in a diploma or bachelor's degree programme at a public or private institution recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
Endorsement from their institutions is also required.
Applications must be submitted online through the Yayasan Sarawak portal at https://myys.yayasansarawak.org.my with the necessary supporting documents.
Students are reminded to ensure they have a valid Sarawak ID and an SPay Global account before applying.
Introduced as part of Abang Johari's winding-up speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, the assistance was initially targeted at students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below.
However, the eligibility has since been broadened to include all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students with Sarawakian status, regardless of socioeconomic background.

Tmn Impian Emas folk use recycling revenue for events to foster ties
Muhammad Imran weighing a bag of recyclables at the Perita recycling centre in Taman Impian Emas, Johor Baru. A neighbourhood-led recycling centre in Iskandar Puteri is quietly making an impact, having collected nearly 20 tonnes of recyclable materials since it was launched almost four years ago. The Community Recycling Centre under Impian Utara 6B Residents Association (Perita) has become a key part of daily life for Taman Impian Emas residents, offering a convenient way to manage waste and contribute to sustainability. Its recycling committee chairperson Muhammad Imran Ismail said the centre was part of a wider movement to empower residents to manage recyclable waste at a time that suited them. Established in October 2021 through funding from the Iskandar Puteri Low Carbon Community Grant 1.0, the centre started with regular awareness campaigns to get residents on board with the idea of sorting recyclables at home before disposal. 'The initiative is guided by local academics who also reside in the area, forming a close-knit partnership with Perita,' he said. Muhammad Imran said the recycling centre had collected 19,967kg of recyclable items, including paper, aluminium cans, glass bottles, plastics and e-waste. He said this had generated an income of RM9,577, which was used to support centre operations and community programmes in the area. In addition, he said the centre had collected 660 litres of used cooking oil, equivalent to RM1,077. 'Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many residents requesting expanded facilities, such as specific stations for electronic waste and workshops for upcycling old items into useful products,' he added. Muhammad Imran said based on its records, paper-based materials accounted for 59.4% of all items collected, making it the top category. He said this included boxes, newspapers, coloured paper, and books while plastic accounted for 13%, glass bottles 10%, scrap metal 7.6%, e-waste 6.6% and used cooking oil 3.4%. 'Revenue from recycling is primarily used to cover operational costs and maintenance of the centre. 'Any surplus funds are channelled into the Perita community fund, which benefits all residents. 'While there is no fixed allocation for the proceeds, the funds have allowed us to organise community events like Malaysia Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival,' he said. Muhammad Imran said these events helped to strengthen neighbourhood bonds while promoting sustainability and collective responsibility. He said the association planned to explore more upcycling workshops and expand recycling categories in response to residents' feedback and growing environmental awareness.

KTC buys RM40mil plot in Sabah industrial hub
KOTA KINABALU: Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Bhd (KTC) has made heads turn with the acquisition of land worth RM40 million here. The six-hectare plot at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) will be for the development of KTC Industrial Park, the group's integrated hub for operations, logistics, and manufacturing. KTC executive director Datuk Dexter Lau said move is expected to elevate the company's annual revenue of RM1.5 billion to RM1.6 billion, strengthening it's position a leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) distributor in East Malaysia. "This strategic investment also marks a major milestone in the group's long-term growth strategy and is expected to support its expansion plans for the next five years," Lau said of the land in the heart of the industrial zone. The development is expected to improve operational efficiency, streamline supply chain capabilities, and further strengthen KTC's presence in both existing and new markets across Malaysia, he added. "The KTC Industrial Park is also set to become one of the largest FMCG distribution centers in the region, designed to efficiently serve markets in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesia. "This investment is a strategic move that puts us on the path of sustainable growth and provides the space and infrastructure needed to meet growing demand while serving our business partners more effectively," he said, when announcing the acquisition here. Lau also said that KTC had surpassed RM1 billion in revenue as of June this year and continues to be on a strong growth trajectory. He added that KTC's total operational footprint currently covers 500,000 square feet. "We will commence construction of the KTC Industrial Park in KKIP as soon as possible, with a total investment of RM100 million. "The industrial park is expected to generate 500 new jobs, and we will prioritise hiring locals from underprivileged backgrounds to support the government's efforts in eradicating poverty," he said.

Aminuddin urges Selangor to expedite repairs on Genting Peras-Kuala Klawang road
SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has called on the Selangor government to expedite repair works on the Genting Peras-Kuala Klawang road that was damaged by floods four years ago. He said the road, which connects Jelebu in Negeri Sembilan and Hulu Langat in Selangor, could help ease traffic congestion, especially during festive seasons and school holidays, besides serving as an alternative route for motorists heading to Kuala Lumpur. 'The damaged section in Jelebu has already been repaired, but the part at the Selangor border isn't. I will write to the Selangor Menteri Besar urging prompt repairs. Since it was damaged in 2021, we have not been able to use the route fully until now. 'If the road is repaired, it can become an alternative route to the Klang Valley. Motorists won't have to go through Seremban, they can go via Genting Peras from Jelebu into Hulu Langat and straight to Kuala Lumpur or Selangor,' he told a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting here today. The Kuala Klawang-Genting Peras road has been closed to traffic since December 2021 after it was damaged by floods and landslides. Meanwhile, Aminuddin, who is also the Port Dickson Member of Parliament, said the state government has allocated RM1 million for a solar-powered lighting programme in rural areas, including Orang Asli villages. 'The RM2 million allocated by the Public Works Department for lighting is insufficient, as there are still poorly lit areas, so we've added another RM1 million. 'This is to ensure that attention is given to marginalised rural areas. It's part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and provide comfort and security to road users,' he said. On a separate matter, Aminuddin also extended condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the accident along the East-West Highway, near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, on Monday (June 9).
