Bill Gates Celebrates Microsoft's 50th Anniversary, but Admits It's a 'Bittersweet' Milestone

Yahoo04-04-2025

Bill Gates felt a range of emotions ahead of Microsoft's 50th anniversary.
In a blog post published two days before the actual milestone on Friday, April 4, the billionaire philanthropist — who co-founded the company in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen — said he was "excited" to celebrate, but admitted that "reaching this milestone feels bittersweet."
"I always love reflecting back on Microsoft's history and dreaming about its future," he wrote. "But it's also hard to believe that such a significant piece of my life has been around for a half-century."

For Gates, 69, who has spent a lot of time reflecting on the early years of his life for his memoir Source Code, which came out in February, it's easy to remember the company's beginnings.
Before Microsoft was even Micro-Soft (yes, that's a thing), Gates and Allen, who died in 2018, shared a love of computers.

"The story of how Microsoft came to be begins with, of all things, a magazine," Gates wrote in his blog post. The cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Mechanics featured a photo of an Altair 8800, which Gates described as a "groundbreaking personal computer kit that promised to bring computer power to hobbyists'
'When Paul and I saw that cover,' Gates continued, 'we knew two things: the PC revolution was imminent, and we wanted to get in on the ground floor.'
The two friends knew that software would be the key to shaping how people interacted with computers, so they reached out to the company behind the Altair 8800 and told them they already had a version of BASIC – a programming language that's easy for even beginners to use – that would work for the machine.
The only problem? They hadn't actually built that software just yet — but after 'lots of sleepless nights,' they did. And that software, which is made out of code, became Microsoft's first product.

And in honor of the milestone anniversary, Gates shared a link to download that original source code.
"Computer programming has come a long way," he added, "but I'm still super proud of how it turned out."

Carlos Alcaraz's Family Includes a Former Tennis Pro Dad

Professional tennis player Carlos Alcaraz comes from an athletic family that includes a former tennis pro dad. A 2023 Vogue profile story on Alcaraz, 22, sketched out his family background. The Spanish tennis phenom is playing in the French Open final on June 8 against Italian Jannik Sinner. Advertisement According to People, Alcaraz's family includes his father Carlos Alcaraz González and mother Virginia Garfia Escandon, and his three brothers, Álvaro, Sergio and Jaime. Alcaraz was raised "in a village outside Murcia called El Palmar," Spain, which he still visits on weekends, according to Vogue. "Some 40 years ago, his great-uncle built a tennis club there, on what was a clay-pigeon shooting range," according to Vogue, which said Alcaraz's dad played professional tennis "until he couldn't afford to continue." Alcaraz told Vogue he was born "with tennis in my blood," and his dad "became the director" of the family tennis club. Alcaraz also has an older brother named Alvaro, who "played in tournaments before him" and two younger brothers who are "passionate about tennis." Advertisement According to that article, Alcaraz's mom "worked as a shop assistant at IKEA." Alcaraz "got his first racket at the age of four," and his father told Vogue he would cry as a kid when he had to stop playing tennis in order to have dinner. 'In my family, I think we have the sport in our blood,' Alcaraz told The New York Times. 'We all played from the time we were young.' He told "You have to be surrounded by great people. I'm a lucky guy to have such a great team. I'm going to say the best team in the tour right now,' Alcaraz says. 'But also my family, my friends are nice persons. For me, it's really, really important. As I said, doing great in tennis because of the people that I have around.' WWE news: Ric Flair confirms second cancer diagnosis in 3 years

The post WWE news: Ric Flair confirms second cancer diagnosis in 3 years appeared first on ClutchPoints. It's unfortunate to say, but Ric Flair is gearing up for another real-life fight. The two-time WWE Hall of Famer told PEOPLE magazine he has been diagnosed with skin cancer, making it the second time in three years that he's faced the illness, SI reports. Advertisement Flair confirmed he'll begin treatment next week and thanked his supporters for the outpouring of concern. After initially denying health reports on social media to keep the matter private, he decided now was the time to share the news. 'I appreciate the concerns!' he said, grateful for the messages from fans who have followed his storied career. The wrestling icon has stared down death before. In 2017, Flair suffered multiple organ failures due to alcohol abuse. Doctors gave him just a 20 percent chance of surviving. He was placed in a medically induced coma, had part of his bowel removed, and received a pacemaker. 'I crashed in an airplane and broke my back, I've been hit by lightning,' Flair told PEOPLE back then. 'But this is totally different. Anything I've been through before is nothing like this.' Resilience in and out of the ring Flair's journey has been marked by both triumph and trauma. His struggles with health and addiction were at the center of the 2022 Peacock documentary Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair. Former partner Wendy Barlow discussed how deeply the physical and emotional toll affected him behind the scenes. Advertisement Even after everything, Flair returned to the ring for one last match in 2022. He teamed with son-in-law Andrade to defeat AEW stars Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal in a match that felt more like a tribute to his legacy than a battle for bragging rights. He most recently appeared on AEW's Collision on May 17, participating in a tribute to former NFL player and fellow wrestler Steve 'Mongo' McMichael. For decades, Ric Flair has been known for his style, bravado, and unforgettable performances. Now, once again, he's showing the same strength that made him a legend. Microsoft reveals new handheld Xbox Ally gaming PC in partnership with Asus

As with the Xbox Series X|S, the ROG Xbox Ally will ship in two models: one aimed for power users (Ally X), and a cheaper model (Ally, shown here) with slightly lower specs. (Xbox Image) After months of rumors, Microsoft officially debuted its ROG Xbox Ally gaming PC on Sunday, made in collaboration with Taiwanese computer company Asus. The ROG Xbox Ally is planned to ship this holiday season with two separate SKUs, with the same scheme and coloration as the Xbox Series X|S console. The white Ally is a lower-powered model aimed at casual players, while the more expensive black Xbox Ally X is billed as the 'ultimate high-performance handheld.' No prices have been announced. Both models of Xbox Ally are custom-made versions of Asus' ROG Ally handheld unit, with exclusive features such as a dedicated Xbox guide button. They're designed to support local native downloads, remote play by connecting to a local Xbox console, or streaming gameplay through the newly-rebranded Xbox Cloud. According to Microsoft, the Xbox Ally runs an optimized version of Windows 11 Home that integrates features from both Microsoft's Game Bar and Asus' Armoury Crate app. The Windows OS also lets you install games from multiple digital storefronts such as and Steam, or use apps such as Discord. The Xbox Ally is also stated to feature a 'Xbox full screen experience' that aggregates all your games from every available library connected to the device, eliminating the need to hunt through all your various apps to find what you're looking for. Both versions of the Ally are planned to ship with the recently-announced Copilot for Gaming integrated into the Game Bar, billed by Xbox as an AI-powered 'personalized gaming companion.' The Xbox Ally X is also powered by an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, which is designed to 'power the latest AI features as they are introduced.' The Xbox Ally was revealed as part of this year's Xbox Showcase, a 90-minute presentation held as part of the annual Summer Games Fest in Los Angeles. While past Showcases have been broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater, this year's was pre-recorded, with segments hosted by Microsoft's Sarah Bond, Matt Booty, and Phil Spencer. Bond made a point of noting during the Showcase that every game that was shown this year will ship day-and-date on both Xbox Game Pass and will be compatible at launch with the Xbox Ally. One big surprise about the Xbox Ally, mentioned almost in passing during the Showcase, is that the long-awaited indie platformer Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently scheduled as a 'launch title' for the Ally. This is the first mention of Silksong anywhere during Summer Games Fest, which is a shock, as 'where's Silksong?' has been a running joke during every major gaming show for the last couple of years. In a slightly lower-key detail, this was the first Xbox Showcase held after Microsoft's recent move into cross-platform publishing. While no specific announcements were made on the topic, every game that's also headed to competing storefront like the PlayStation 5 or Steam was labeled as such during the Showcase. That was not the case before today. Obsidian's The Outer Worlds 2 lets you fight or potentially join the minions of 'Auntie's Choice,' the company that's bleeding the system of Arcadia dry.
