Seven years after kate spade's suicide, best friend elyce arons shares their story

Express Tribune04-06-2025
Spade, known to close friends as 'Katy,' died by suicide on June 5, 2018. Arons met Spade when they were freshmen in college, and their friendship blossomed into a business partnership that helped build the iconic Kate Spade brand. The memoir offers a rare glimpse into their personal connection and Spade's private struggles, which Arons describes as 'a permanent ache.'
In an excerpt published by PEOPLE, Arons recalls visiting Spade's Park Avenue apartment days after her death. The once bright and meticulously kept home was dark and chaotic. As Arons opened the closet door to retrieve clothes, a swarm of moths flew out. She instinctively yelled, thinking Spade might be playing one of their old pranks. The moment underscored the painful reality that her friend was truly gone.
Their story began in 1981 at the University of Kansas and continued through the rise of their handbag business in the '90s, alongside Spade's husband, Andy, and partner Pamela Bell. The brand's success grew quickly, leading to CFDA honors and global expansion. Despite professional triumphs, Spade's private life became more complex. After launching a new brand, Frances Valentine, in 2016, she died two years later.
Arons admits she's still processing the loss. 'Those who loved her continue to grapple with her loss, seeking peace with a decision that left lasting heartbreak,' she writes. Her message now is simple: cherish the people you love and never take their presence for granted.
We Just Might Make It After All will be released June 17 and is available for preorder.

Brandy and Monica launch Dunkin' Cereal ‘N Milk Latte ahead of reunion tour

Brandy and Monica are blending music and nostalgia with a new collaboration alongside Dunkin'. The R&B icons have partnered with the coffee chain to launch the Cereal 'N Milk Latte, set to debut nationwide on August 20. The drink combines espresso with cereal milk and a marshmallow flavor, aiming to evoke the nostalgic taste of the last sip from a cereal bowl. The release coincides with the kickoff of The Boy Is Mine reunion tour — the first-ever co-headlining tour for the two artists, marking 25 years since their Grammy-winning 1998 hit of the same name. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Brandy explained that the idea stemmed from a creative pitch by Dunkin', which played off the title of their iconic song with the tagline 'The Latte Is Mine.' Brandy recalled, 'They reached out to us and had this exciting idea to play off of our song. We just thought that was so cute — and we fell in love with the drink!' Monica highlighted the drink's nostalgic flavor, describing it as 'a creamy espresso latte blended with cereal and milk — something we all grew up eating anyway.' She added, 'It has a familiar, nostalgic taste to it.' The duo also stars in a promotional commercial by Betches Studios, in which they humorously compete over the new latte, echoing the rivalry theme of their hit song before Brandy jokingly demands peace and a latte. As for the tour, both artists are keeping much of it under wraps. 'We aren't sharing any details about it,' Monica said, emphasizing their intention to preserve surprise for fans. 'You don't get to be genuinely surprised like you used to back in the '90s.' Confirmed guest appearances on the tour include Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and American Idol winner Jamal Roberts. Brandy promised audiences 'one of the best shows ever — vocally, stage, everything.' The Cereal 'N Milk Latte will be available at participating Dunkin' locations, as well as through the app and online, beginning August 20.

Jana Duggar expecting first child with husband Stephen Wissmann

Jana Duggar is expecting her first child with husband Stephen Wissmann, nearly one year after the couple tied the knot. The Counting On alum, 35, announced the pregnancy on Instagram, sharing joyful photos with her husband and revealing that their baby is due in January 2026. 'We are so excited, January 2026 is going to come with a little bundle of joy joining our family!' the couple wrote in the caption. 'We're counting down the days and eagerly looking forward to this thrilling new chapter in our lives!' The announcement comes almost exactly a year after Duggar and Wissmann were married in a 'classic, elegant' ceremony on August 15, 2024, in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. The wedding took place at The Grand at Willow Springs and was attended by 500 guests. Jana's sister Jessa Duggar Seewald served as maid of honor, while other family members, including Joy-Anna Forsyth, Johannah Duggar, Jinger Duggar Vuolo, Jordyn Duggar, and sister-in-law Abbie Duggar, were bridesmaids. In a pre-wedding interview with PEOPLE, Duggar spoke about how the experience felt surreal after years of wondering whether she would ever get married. 'It felt like, 'Okay, it's never coming.' But now it's starting to sink in,' she said. 'It's a dream come true.' Duggar also shared that she had initially been cautious about falling in love, but Wissmann's patience and consistent support helped build trust. 'He must really, genuinely care about me,' she said, adding that he never pressured her and remained a steady presence through life's ups and downs.

Is Taylor Swift's new song about Blake Lively?

Taylor Swift and Blake Lively, once one of Hollywood's most famous best friend duos, are reportedly no longer on speaking terms. The shift in their friendship comes at a time when Swift is preparing to release her highly anticipated new album The Life of a Showgirl, set for October, and speculation is mounting that one of its tracks may shed light on their current rift. According to People, a source close to the pair has revealed that the two have not been communicating in recent months. Their friendship, which dates back to 2014, first faced public scrutiny when Swift's name became tied to Blake Lively's legal battle with her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni. Baldoni's team at one point alleged that Swift had influenced him to accept rewrites proposed by Lively, a claim later dismissed. Although Swift was eventually dropped from the case after a subpoena was withdrawn, her name had already become entangled in the ongoing feud. Swift's representatives argued at the time that her involvement was used merely to generate tabloid headlines rather than to address facts in the case. Now, attention has turned to Swift's upcoming single Ruin the Friendship, which appears on her new record. Fans online are speculating that the song is inspired by her deteriorating relationship with Lively. The timing of the track announcement, just as rumours of a fallout surfaced, has only fuelled further theories across social media. The friendship between the pop icon and the actress once seemed unshakable. Swift is godmother to Lively and Ryan Reynolds' children, and their daughter James famously featured on Swift's Reputation track Gorgeous, while all three of their daughters were name-checked on her album Folklore. While neither Swift nor Lively has directly commented on the state of their relationship, multiple sources suggest the two are not in the same place they once were. Whether Ruin the Friendship offers clues remains to be seen, but Swift's fans are already dissecting every lyric ahead of the album's October 3 release.
