Moroccan football legend Ahmed Faras passes away at 78

Former Moroccan international Ahmed Faras passed away on Wednesday in Mohammedia at the age of 78, after a long illness, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sports Champions announced.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in Moroccan and African football, Faras left a lasting legacy with the Atlas Lions. As captain of the national team, he led Morocco to its only Africa Cup of Nations title in 1976. That same year, he was awarded the African Ballon d'Or, a prestigious honor recognizing his talent and impact across the continent.
A legend of Chabab Mohammedia, Faras also left his mark on the domestic league. He was the top scorer in 1969 and 1973 and won the Throne Cup twice, in 1972 and 1975.
His funeral will take place on Thursday in Mohammedia, following the Addohr prayer.

FIFA President to open Rabat office this Saturday

On Saturday, July 26, FIFA will officially inaugurate its regional office in Rabat, the first of its kind in North Africa. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is in Morocco to attend the milestone event. According to media reports, the opening ceremony will coincide with the final match of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations «Morocco 2024», set to kick off at 9 PM at the Rabat Olympic Stadium. Infantino arrived in Morocco on Saturday, July 19, where he was greeted by Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and a member of the FIFA Council. The agreement to establish the Rabat office was signed in December 2024 by Infantino, Lekjaa, and Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch during a ceremony held at the Conference Palace in Marrakech, following the CAF Awards. FIFA currently operates several regional offices around the world, including four in Africa: Dakar (Senegal), Brazzaville (Republic of Congo), Kigali (Rwanda), and Johannesburg (South Africa).

The FIFA Referees Committee has announced the list of match officials for the U20 World Cup 2025, with a total of 54 referees from 22 member associations, including three Moroccan officials.
