NEW YORK — A Filipina who was reported missing in Las Vegas, Nevada, has been found dead.
Seventy-five-year-old Lourdes Morin was reported missing by her family on July 27. She was last seen heading to attend Mass at St. Viator Church near Flamingo, but she never returned home.
According to a Missing Person Alert issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Morin was last seen around 7:00 a.m. on July 26 near Dorothy Avenue. She was wearing a white blouse and black pants at the time.
Three days later, her decomposing body was discovered by hikers in a ravine, approximately 10 kilometers from where she was last seen.
According to Michael Lampkin, the husband of Morin's daughter, her body was found face down in a gully and was already in an advanced state of decomposition.
Authorities have yet to determine whether foul play was involved. An autopsy has been conducted to establish the exact cause of death.
The victim's family is now asking: How did Lourdes end up in a ravine so far from where she was last seen?
Morin, a native of Victorias City, Negros Occidental, arrived in Las Vegas in May to visit her daughter and grandchildren. A green card holder, she was scheduled to return to the Philippines in January.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by a family friend to help raise funds for her cremation and the repatriation of her ashes to the Philippines.
Michael is also appealing to the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles for assistance in bringing Lourdes home.
He said they have been calling the consulate for several days but have only reached an answering machine.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Woman dies after truck crashes into store in Ibaan, Batangas

A woman was killed after a speeding truck that swerved to avoid another vehicle crashed into a barangay cooperative store in Ibaan, Batangas, on Sunday afternoon. In GTV's Balitanghali report on Monday, CCTV footage shows a truck about to enter the gate of the Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Barangay Bago. But as this was happening, another truck was seen approaching from the opposite lane. Instead of slowing down, the speeding vehicle continued moving forward and suddenly swerved to avoid the first truck at the very last moment but crashed into the roadside store. A few seconds later, a man was seen carrying an unconscious woman outside the store. The victim was buying goods at the cooperative store and was hit by debris from a wall that collapsed due to the collision. The driver of the truck that smashed into the store is now in police custody and will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property. He has not issued any statement. Police said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. — Sherylin Untalan/RF, GMA Integrated News

Senator urges BSP to apply stricter measures vs. online lending apps

Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva on Friday called on the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to implement more stringent action against online lending apps amid the rise of internet gambling in the country. Villanueva, who earlier filed an anti-online gambling bill, said the BSP's regulatory oversight on online lending apps, electronic wallets, and digital banks should complement the efforts of law enforcement agencies in addressing the ill effects of online gambling to society. "Kapag pinagsama po ang iligal na online gambling at ang mapagsamantalang pautang ng mga online lending apps, siguradong malulugmok sa kumunoy ang ating mga kababayan," the senator said in a statement. (When you combine illegal online gambling and the exploitative loans offered by the online lending apps, our countrymen will surely fall into quicksand.) "Regulatory agencies must exercise their oversight to support our law enforcement bodies, and do their fair share in slowing down the rampant use of online gambling platforms," he added. The Senate is set to hold an investigation regarding online gambling in the country, as announced by Senator Erwin Tulfo, chairman of the Senate games and amusement committee. Several other lawmakers have also called either for the total ban or strict regulation of online gambling, citing its negative impact on Filipinos who got addicted to it. Villanueva also disclosed that he received information that some employees of Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) have now shifted to online gambling operations, seeking electronic gaming licenses from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). "How does PAGCOR actually screen and monitor its licensees to ensure that these same individuals are not resurfacing under a different name or company? What concrete actions does PAGCOR take when irregularities are discovered?" he asked. PAGCOR Chairman Alejandro Tengco earlier noted that the gaming industry regulator recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ad Standards Council (ASC) to strengthen the monitoring of gambling-related advertisements across all platforms. It also recently ordered the takedown of all gambling ads in public spaces and primetime TV by August 15 this year. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
