Cabinet approves free bus ride for women in Andhra Pradesh from August 15

The Hindu4 days ago
The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved a series of transformative welfare initiatives ahead of the National Handloom Day, significantly impacting women, weavers, and small business owners across the State.
These include the free bus ride for women and handholding to the weaver community and Nayee Brahmins (who are into salon services).
Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday, I&PR Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy said, among the flagship measures, was the free bus travel scheme for women, set to be launched on August 15, under the 'Stree Shakti' initiative, which was one of the government's Super Six election promises.
'The scheme will allow over 2.6 crore women, girl students, and transgender individuals to travel free of cost on APSRTC buses, including Palle Velugu, Express, and Metro Express services. Valid ID proof is required, and services such as inter-State, chartered, or package tours are excluded,' the Minister said.
Cost to exchequer
'The scheme will apply to 74% of the APSRTC fleet (about 6,700 buses), benefiting nearly 27 lakh commuters daily. The annual cost to the exchequer is expected to reach ₹1,942 crore. To meet increased demand, the State will procure 3,000 electric buses this year, with 1,400 more over two years. Safety upgrades include body cams for female conductors and CCTV cameras on buses, along with improved bus station facilities,' he said.
Mr. Parthasarathy said, in a major boost to the traditional weaving sector, the Cabinet approved a comprehensive ₹648.59 crore relief package.
'The measures include free electricity (200 units for manual looms and 500 units for power looms), 5% GST reimbursement, and revival of the Thrift Fund Scheme, wherein the government matches 8% of a weaver's savings. Additionally, ₹5 crore has been allocated for 2025–26, and pending dues of ₹17.17 crore from 2017 onwards will be cleared,' the Minister said.
Further, the Cabinet approved 150–200 units of free electricity for 40,808 hair-cutting saloons, both AC and non-AC, imposing an estimated ₹100 crore annual burden on the State.
In other decisions, the Cabinet approved the formulation of a Social Media Policy and extended the ban on the CPI (Maoist) and its affiliated organisations such as RYL, RSU, SIKASA, and RDF until August 2026, under the Public Security Act.

Fault in the stars: Communist leader's photo with astrologer causes stir in Kerala's ruling CPM

Kerala CPI(M) state secretary and politburo member M V Govindan has found himself embroiled in a controversy after photos of him with a well-known astrologer were widely shared on social media. The issue has been smouldering within the CPI(M) after the matter of party leaders clandestinely visiting astrologers came up in its state committee meeting held on Thursday. The issue intensified after a photograph of Govindan with prominent Kannur-based astrologer Madhava Poduval circulated on social media. On Saturday, Govindan denied reports that some leaders in the party had criticised him for meeting the astrologer. 'There was no such criticism,' he said. The astrologer, Poduval, however, told the media that he has a long-standing relationship with Govindan and that the CPI(M) leader had visited him earlier this year 'out of love' and not to avail his services as an astrologer. 'Govindan met me with his family… I have known him for several years, and he came to meet me when I was recovering after a surgery. He did not meet me as an astrologer; he came out of love, and someone took a photo,' Poduval said in Kannur district's Payyannur. The astrologer also said that he had breakfast with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during the Nava Kerala Yatra — a state-wide tour undertaken by the Kerala Cabinet last year. He also said that he has met several prominent figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Even as Govindan tried to play down the incident, senior party leader A K Balan came out with a defence of CPI(M) leaders meeting astrologers. 'There is nothing wrong with Communists meeting astrologers. Meeting with astrologers or maintaining a relationship with them does not mean that we agree with their ideology. It is quite normal that we meet the astrologers. Govindan has not met the astrologer to find an auspicious time for something. We are all staunch advocates of dialectical materialism,' he said. In 2021, Govindan, then a CPI(M) central committee member, sparked a major debate within the Left after he said that dialectical materialism, a philosophical approach associated with Karl Marx, was not practical in the Indian context. He subsequently said that the Left must bring both atheists and believers under its umbrella. The CPI(M), which has always claimed to stand for scientific temperament, has previously taken strong exception to party leaders taking to astrology. In 2008, A P Abdullakuty, then a CPI(M) MP, had courted controversy after turning to a form of astrology known as Nadi astrology. This was one of the incidents that led to Abdullakuty's estrangement from the party and later his ouster. He is now a BJP national vice-president.

All govt buildings to be solar powered: Bhatti

Hyderabad: Solar power plants will be installed on all Gram Panchayats and government buildings including the state Secretariat, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has said on Saturday. The Deputy CM held a video conference with district Collectors and reviewed the implementation of Green Energy Policy under which solar power plants will be installed on all government buildings. Bhatti instructed that plans of all district collector offices, parking areas, and canteens should be sent to Hyderabad. Since all collectorates in the state have been built in the same design, the designs required for the installation of solar power plants would be sent from Hyderabad. However, if any collectorate has better designs, the respective collectors may send them to Hyderabad. He stated that solar power plants will be installed in all government offices across the state, from Gram Panchayat buildings to the Secretariat, to produce power on a large scale. A questionnaire related to the details required for setting up solar power plants will be sent to the collectors, and they must fill it in completely and send it to the office of the Principal Secretary for Energy within a week. Apart from government buildings, the Deputy CM directed that solar power plants should also be installed on government schools, junior colleges, degree colleges, and higher education institution buildings, and details of these buildings should be sent. The collectors were also instructed to send details of the large vacant lands available under the jurisdiction of the Irrigation Department and the Roads & Buildings Department. The Deputy CM explained to the collectors that under the ROFR Act, 6.70 lakh acres of land were distributed by the then Congress government in agency areas, and that, under the Nallamala Declaration, the government plans to provide free solar pump sets in these lands through the Indira Solar Girijana Vikasam scheme. As part of the Nallamala Declaration, the programme has already started in Achampet constituency, and the state government is planning to launch it in certain areas of Adilabad district this month.

Germany suspends arms trade with Israel due to plans of total occupation of Gaza

Berlin, Aug 9 (UNI) Germany has suspended its arms delivery to Israel, following the Israeli Cabinet's greenlighting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plans of occupying the whole of Gaza Strip, reports RT. The Israeli premier announced his annexation plan as part of a wider aim to demilitarise the war-torn enclave, free the hostages, and disarm or eliminate Hamas terrorists, paving the way for a transitional authority free of oversight from either Jerusalem or the Palestine Authority. Netanyahu, some time back said that he was aiming to gain full military control of the enclave. The move has been criticised in both the political and military circles, as potentially putting the remaining captives in danger, as well as lead to more IDF casualties. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stressed that while Berlin supports the Jewish state's struggle 'against Hamas' terror' and prioritises the return of Israeli hostages, it remains unclear how the new military push will achieve those goals. 'Under these circumstances, the German Government will, until further notice, authorise no military equipment exports that can be used in the Gaza Strip,' he said in a statement on the website of the federal government on Friday. Merz added Berlin is 'profoundly concerned' about the ongoing crisis in Gaza, and that Jerusalem's military entry will only make it more obliged to provide humanitarian aid to Gazans. The German decision was criticised by Israel, with the Prime Minister's Office stating that Netanyahu called the German leader and expressed 'disappointment with Merz's decision to embargo arms to Israel.' 'Instead of supporting Israel's just war against Hamas,' Berlin is 'rewarding Hamas terrorism by embargoing arms to Israel,' the office said in a statement on X on Friday. UNI ANV RN
