UNC basketball 2024-25 player review: Ven-Allen Lubin
The 2024-25 UNC basketball season is in the books, and with that, it's time for our player season reviews for the campaign.
We're continuing our review with Ven-Allen Lubin, the Vanderbilt transfer who transitioned from backup center to a permanent fixture in North Carolina's starting lineup.
The Tar Heels knew that filling the shoes of Armando Bacot would be a tough task. Bacot left UNC as the program's all-time leader in rebounds and double-doubles, production that can't be replaced overnight.
North Carolina hoped that after he waited two seasons behind Bacot, Jalen Washington could produce starting caliber-numbers. Inconsistency led to Washington flip-flopping between the bench and starting lineup.
Ironically, Lubin started his first season in Chapel Hill coming off the bench. Hubert Davis gave Lubin a couple spot starts here and then, but turned to Lubin as the full-time starter come February.
Though he's a bit undersized for a center at 6'8", Lubin makes up for that with his aggressiveness and strong rebounding ability. Without Lubin last season, the Tar Heels don't sneak into the NCAA Tournament.
2024-25 stats: 8.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 0.9 blocks, 0.3 assists per game, 68.4 percent field goal shooting in 37 games (20 starts)
Season in Review
After UNC struggled against tougher competition during the non-conference portion of its schedule, head coach Hubert Davis knew something needed to change.
What better way to create a spark than mix up the starting lineup?
North Carolina lost its first game of 2025 at Louisville, but Lubin started to show his rebounding prowess by grabbing nine boards. Five games later in a 1-point loss to Stanford, Lubin scores in double-figures, a feat he accomplishes again in the Tar Heels' 67-66 win over Pitt.
Lubin really started to shine during UNC's blowout (97-73) victory against NC State in February, scoring 13 points. This started a streak of 11 consecutive games in double-figures for the Vanderbilt transfer, highlighted by double-doubles in each of North Carolina's ACC Tournament games.
Though Lubin started his first year in Chapel Hill flip-flopping between the Tar Heels' bench and their starting lineup, Lubin ended his junior campaign as the Tar Heels' top rebounder.
What's next?
Thanks to his late-season surge, Lubin will be a crucial part of UNC's 2025-2026 roster. With 7-foot center Henri Veesaar's arrival via the transfer portal, plus Caleb Wilson's arrival as a Top-10 recruit and 6'9" power forward, Lubin may revert back to a heightened bench role.
Historically, North Carolina opts to start experienced guys over freshman. I have a difficult time imagining that Wilson comes off the bench, though, while I know Veesaar will start.
Lubin hasn't confirmed his plans to return, but the Tar Heels love him. I bet Lubin starts a few games early during UNC's upcoming season, particularly as Hubert tries to discover his best rotations.

It's not the first time that Sanders has confronted a perceived detractor in a public setting. In 2024, the then-Colorado Buffaloes quarterback caught up with Colorado State quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and refused to shake his hand following a 43-35 Colorado victory. Sanders finished 14-of-23 passing with 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns win. He played almost three entire quarters and showcased skill that led some draft analysts to believe he should have been a Day 1 selection. With more performances like he had on Friday night, Sanders may find himself speaking with plenty more critics in the coming weeks, months or years. Panthers' Xavier Legette, Browns' Rayshawn Jenkins ejected after exchanging blows during preseason matchup
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette started off his sophomore campaign with an ejection after he got into a physical brawl during the team's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns on Friday night. Legette, the Panthers' first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was ejected alongside Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter after exchanging blows on the field. This brawl happened after Jenkins appeared to continue to block Legette long after the play ended. Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters after the game that Legette had been doing what he was supposed to during the play, but added that both players deserved a disqualification after getting physical. "We ask our receivers to play with hands on – he was. He had his hands on the guy the whole time, through the echo of the whistle. The guy swung and chopped his arms down, and Xavier just kind of held on to his jersey. "Then they started exchanging punches – you can't do that. Neither side. Both guys got ejected, rightly so," he continued. "We can't have that as a part of our game. It's a physical game … tempers are gonna get hot, but as soon as you throw a punch all of a sudden we're at a disadvantage. So, we want to see better from X for sure." Legette apologized to fans after the game in a post on X. "Panthers nation I apologize It want happen again," his post read. "i appreCiate youu all." Bryce Young dazzles in 2025 NFL preseason debut originally appeared on The Sporting News While the NFL world was focused on the debut of Cleveland Browns rookie Shedur Sanders, little was said about Carolina Panthers starter Bryce Young. Young, who played just the first quarter last night against the Browns, looked like he did at the end of last season: poise, confident, and on the mark. For the evening, Young was 4 for 6 for 58 yards and a touchdown. Many fans were saying that Young looked like the Young of old, who played at Alabama, especially the way he moved in the pocket. Young also had a passer rating of 137.5. "Yeah, it feels great," Young said of his play via the Panthers website. "Offseason is so long you forget how much you miss playing this game. Definitely a blessing to be able to be out here with the best fans in the NFL. Come out here, it's not a weekend anymore, I guess not a Sunday, but go out here and play football. It's always great." Since being benched last year for backup Andy Dalton, Young has been nothing short of spectacular at times. He sees the field better, and the confidence he had shown while he was at Alabama is back. On top of all of that, he seems to be enjoying the game again, something we hadn't seen very often in his first few years. Losing can be hard on any player, especially when you come from a program like Alabama, where he was used to winning. It can wear you down and test your attitude, but it appears that Young may have gotten past all of that and is ready for a breakout season for the Carolina Panthers, at least the fans and coaches think so. If Young plays like that the rest of the season, the NFL may be in trouble.
