From new rooms to smart classrooms: JNU's management, engineering await big upgrades
As part of a ₹483.66 crore infrastructure overhaul under the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) scheme, the university will construct a modern academic block and two purpose-built hostels for the School of Engineering and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurship.
Modern academic hub for technology and business
According to the report, the upcoming ₹142-crore academic centre will span 29,000 square metres and include advanced lecture halls, simulation labs, interdisciplinary collaboration zones, faculty offices, and subject-specific laboratories. The design aims to support both cutting-edge research and applied learning in technology and business studies.
These facilities are meant to match the academic demands of programmes that, unlike most JNU courses, charge significantly higher tuition fees. General category students pay ₹12 lakh for the full MBA, while OBC (non-creamy layer) students pay ₹8 lakh and SC/ST/PWD students pay ₹6 lakh—raising long-standing concerns about the mismatch between cost and infrastructure. New hostels with upgraded amenities Students will also get brand new hostels—JNU's first ever built specifically for a single academic programme. Together, they'll accommodate 2,600 students, helping end years of dependency on shared, cross-disciplinary housing. The School of Engineering hostel will cover 34,500 square metres and house 1,950 students at a cost of ₹126.69 crore. It will include furnished rooms, reading lounges, green spaces, and a dining hall, noted the news oulet. The management school hostel, sized at 11,500 square metres and costing ₹42.23 crore, will provide space for 650 students in modular rooms with shared workspaces suited for postgraduate life.
Part of a larger push to modernise JNU These upgrades are part of a broader development vision. Under the HEFA scheme, JNU has received clearance for nine major infrastructure projects. TOI further reported these include a trans-disciplinary research and academic block (₹41.24 crore), an advanced animal research centre (₹22.92 crore), a cutting-edge instrumentation facility (₹27.05 crore), a start-up incubation hub (₹17.69 crore), and a 2,000-seat lecture hall complex (₹52.85 crore).
'These projects mark a major milestone for JNU,' said vice-chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit. 'They reflect our commitment to creating a globally competitive, research-oriented university. As we align with the National Education Policy 2020, we're building a future-ready campus for both students and faculty.'

DK ZP to roll out state's first Akka Cafe Trucks
Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat is expanding its women-led food service initiative with the launch of Akka Cafe Trucks, marking a first‐of‐its-kind effort in the state to take Akka cafes on wheels and reach a wider public. The initiative follows the success of two Akka Cafes opened by Adiparshakti women SHG at Ujire and Snehasanjeevini Women SHG at Munnoor in Ullal. Akka Cafe outlets are being opened by women, through self-help groups under National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM). ZP CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari told TOI that women SHGs will be given financial aid of up to Rs 15 lakh and Rs 7 lakh for the purchase of trucks and operational costs, respectively. "The Akka Cafe Trucks scheme was announced for the first time recently, and we also received a circular a week ago. We are in the process of identifying locations for the trucks in the district," he said. A proposal for Akka Cafe Trucks will be sent after identifying suitable locations near hospitals and other crowded places, he said. The Kutumbasri National Resource Unit will check the feasibility and submit a report. Later, the zilla panchayat will submit proposals for additional locations, he said. Speaking of the Akka Cafe at Ujire, the ZP CEO said that the outlet gets an average transaction of Rs 9,000 to Rs 12,000 per day. Meanwhile, the outlet at Munnoor recorded an average transaction of Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 daily. "The zilla panchayat has plans to expand the cafe's network by checking feasibility at various locations in the district. The main purpose of the cafe is to empower women through SHGs," he added. Madurai corpn invites corrections in street vendors' draft voter list
1 2 Madurai: Madurai corporation on Tuesday announced that street vendors across the city can seek corrections, deletions, or modifications in the draft voter list prepared for them. According to a statement, the list, published on notice boards at the corporation's five zonal offices, covers a total of 19,549 vendors identified through multiple enumeration drives. Officials said the survey was undertaken to safeguard vendors' livelihoods, regulate footpath vending, and facilitate the issuance of identity cards. The initial enumeration covered 16,994 vendors. However, following representations from street vendor associations and other stakeholders, a door-to-door verification was conducted to include those left out. This exercise added 2,555 more names, bringing the final draft list close to 20,000. Street vendors have been asked to verify their details and file applications for corrections, deletions, or rectifications between Aug 20 and 26. Applications must be submitted with valid supporting documents to the respective zonal assistant commissioner.
