Brake failure under investigation after truck crash on Christiaan de Wet Road

Authorities are investigating possible mechanical failure following a truck crash at the intersection of Christiaan de Wet and Wilgerood Road on Wednesday afternoon, July 23.
The accident, which occurred shortly after 14:00, brought traffic to a standstill during peak-hour congestion. The truck came to a halt facing oncoming traffic, blocking both lanes and creating a major obstruction.
The Roodepoort Northsider was on the scene and spoke to the driver, Siyabonga Ndlovu, who appeared visibly shaken. According to Ndlovu, he was travelling downhill on Wilgerood Road when the truck began losing air pressure in its braking system.

'I stopped at the traffic light and tried to pump air into the braking system, but the brakes gave in completely, causing the truck to roll into the busy Christiaan de Wet Road,' he said.
On its descent, the truck also struck and damaged a municipal dustbin. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
JMPD officers managed the scene by redirecting traffic and placing cones on the affected lanes. Tow trucks were called in to remove the vehicle and clear the intersection.
While no official cause has been confirmed, investigators are expected to examine the truck's braking system and maintenance records to determine whether mechanical failure was to blame. The outcome of the investigation will likely raise further questions around roadworthiness and heavy vehicle safety on the city's steep roads.

Flashy sports car seen drag racing on Midrand's Allandale Road

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe expressed grave concern about a group of motorists who were drag racing along Allandale Road in Midrand. Deppe said she saw these flashy sports cars on July 13 around 08:50 racing aggressively down the road, 'treating it as if it were a racetrack'. She said this reckless behaviour was completely unacceptable, especially on a peaceful Sunday morning when such disturbances disrupted the entire community. If anyone recognises these cars or knows the owners, I urge you to come forward with this information. We need to hold these individuals accountable to prevent such dangerous actions from recurring. Additionally, there was another car trailing the racers, with its boot open, apparently filming the cars. By working together, we can ensure the safety and tranquillity of our neighbourhood,' added Deppe. She suspects that this was the same crowd that had been racing in the Sunninghill and Waterfalls areas, especially in the wee hours between 22:00 and 04:00. 'The road infrastructure, particularly at intersections, has been destroyed by these people losing control of their vehicles. That's part of the reason why they do it at night; they do the race, and by the time anyone responds, they are long gone. I have reported these to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department [JMPD] control centre several times.' 'The JMPD is actively investigating these allegations. We will be deploying increased patrols to the Allandale Road area, particularly during weekend mornings, to deter similar future incidents and to monitor for any unlawful activities. We also encourage any other community members with information, including those who may have filmed the incident, to come forward and assist with the investigation. Information can be shared anonymously if preferred,' said Fihla. He added that drag racing and any form of reckless driving on public roads, especially residential ones, were unequivocally illegal and posed a severe threat to public safety. In cases where injuries or fatalities occur, more severe charges such as culpable homicide can be applied. Furthermore, the impoundment of the vehicles involved is also a possibility, subject to due legal process.' Fihla commended Deppe's vigilance and for bringing this serious matter to their attention, as the safety and tranquillity of communities were paramount. Two JMPD cops arrested after 'bribe money' found

Two Johannesburg metropolitan police department (JMPD) officers have been arrested on charges of extortion and corruption. This comes after a call from a distressed resident o n Saturday morning. 'The concerned citizen reported being extorted by officers, alleging that officers demanded R8,000 after accusing their company driver of fleeing an accident scene,' it said. They had the vehicle's registration details, which was tracked by JMPD internal affairs. Located at a BP garage in Parktown, a search of the vehicle and two male officers uncovered R5,340, 'much of which could not be accounted for and was suspected to be illicitly obtained. Some of the money was found concealed within the vehicle'. JMPD chief Patrick Jaca said: 'We urge the public to continue reporting any suspicious activities, as their vigilance is crucial in helping us maintain a trustworthy police service.' You can report corruption and unethical behaviour within the JMPD by calling the JMPD anti-fraud and corruption hotline: 0800-203-712 (toll-free), or in person by visiting the JMPD internal affairs directorate at Wemmer Complex 22, Loveday Street, Selby, Joburg.
