On Wednesday, May 7, Dixie Villa received the maximum sentence for manslaughter, per local outlets the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, KHON2 and Hawaii News Now.
Villa was charged with manslaughter in July 2019 after an autopsy report showed that 7-month-old Abigail Lobisch — who was found dead at Villa's home on Feb. 24, 2019 — died of diphenhydramine (an antihistamine found in Benadryl) toxicity, PEOPLE previously reported.
The infant's mother Anna Lobisch broke down in tears while addressing the Oahu Circuit courtroom on Wednesday, per KHON2.
'My life has been defined by grief, loss and the pain of living without Abby is a heavy weight I will carry every single day for the rest of my life,' Anna said, according to the outlet.
'My heart has never stopped hurting,' she added, via Hawaii News Now.
Deputy prosecuting attorney Tiffany Kaeo told the court of Villa's sentencing, 'This drug should never be given to any child under the age of 6 without doctor's orders,' per the outlet.
While on trial, defense lawyer Megan Kau argued that others, including Anna or Abigail's father, could have given diphenhydramine to the infant. She also said Anna could have had the drug in her system from taking Tylenol and passed it on to her daughter while breastfeeding, the Star-Advertiser stated in November while reporting on the guilty verdict.
But Kaeo said Villa was the only person capable of administering the drug and that she was overwhelmed at having to look after three other children at the same time — Abigail's 2-year-old brother and two of her own children, who were also under the age of 5 — and had pacified the older kids with iPads and Abigail with the drug, the Star-Advertiser previously noted.
Villa had been free on bail since 2019, but was taken into custody following her guilty verdict in November after her bail was raised to $500,000, the outlet reported at the time.
On Wednesday, Kaeo urged the judge to impose the full sentence, saying, 'The defendant could have easily called Anna that night to take back her children, and she didn't. She made a choice, and now she should have to deal with the consequences of her choice,' KHON2 reported.
Villa's attorney, Kau, asked for 10 years probation so that her client could continue caring for her two young children, the outlet stated.
'Ms. Villa has remained arrest and conviction free, she's been a contributing member of our community and she was the mother of a special needs child and another child that she cared for on a full-time basis,' Kau said, according to KHON2.
'Six years is a long time to wait for justice and while justice has been delayed, we hope this is not justice denied,' Kaeo said, per the outlet, which stated that prosecutors noted they're expecting an appeal.
Circuit Court Judge Faaunga Toʻotoʻo said, 'This was a difficult trial. The facts and the law here is clear. This should not have happened," according to Hawaii News Now.
Toʻotoʻo continued, 'These are the factors that the court has to consider, as well as what is appropriate, and the only sentence that stands out for this case is that the defendant must be sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment,' per the outlet.

Regarding the sentencing, Anna said, 'I'm so relieved that it's over. I'm happy with what happened in there,' KHON2 reported.

Mayor wants authority to hire, fire police chief
Only two of the seven members of the commission responsible for hiring and firing the Honolulu police chief were told by Mayor Rick Blangiardi that he wants to bring in Hawaii island's police chief to Arthur 'Joe ' Logan. 'I don't have the authority to hire and fire (the police chief ). But that doesn't mean I can't have a candid conversation with the chief of police about the state of the department. Which is exactly what I did, ' said Blangiardi, noting the process of seeking to change the city charter takes at least 18 months. 'I have responsibility not only for HPD but all public safety issues and I have no authority, to deal, officially, (with ) who is the chief of police ' Blangiardi said. 'That's wrong and that is fundamentally bad management structure.' In response to a Star-Advertiser request to interview Logan, Kathleen Alina Lee, HPD's public information officer, told the Star-Advertiser that at 'this time, Chief Logan will not be offering interviews regarding his retirement.' 'All information available is in his current statement. Should he decide to open up the opportunities for interviews in the future, we'll reach out and let media know, ' said Lee, in a statement. The commissioners will meet today at 2 p.m. in the first floor Conference Room A at HPD's Alapai Headquarters for their regularly scheduled meeting. Blangiardi informed HPC Chair Kenneth Silva and Vice Chair Laurie Foster that Logan would retire June 30 and he had negotiated Hawaii Police Chief Ben Moszkowicz's application to serve as interim HPD chief starting July 16. Moszkowicz, a former major with HPD, was one of four finalists for chief when Logan, 66, was selected May 23, 2022. Moszkowicz is a 22-year veteran of HPD who left the department to become chief on Hawaii island. Blangiardi made no secret of his desire for Logan to move on from his post. A public rift between the two leaders emerged following a 2024 New Year's Day-long manhunt and shootout. HPD did not notify the public that officers were chasing around the island an armed attempted murder suspect, who had shot his ex-girlfriend, until the suspect was dead and two officers were shot. The Star-Advertiser asked all seven members of the commission if they discussed Blangiardi's police leadership transition and what they knew about Logan's retirement, who informed them and when. On Monday, Blangiardi, speaking to reporters in his office about Logan's ouster, said commissioners were 'well aware of this for some time now.' Logan's last review from the commission in August said he was exceeding expectations as a leader, innovator and a cost saver while needing to improve internal and external communications. Commissioner Ann Botticelli told the Star-Advertiser she learned of Logan's retirement from the news media. Commissioner Doug Chin told the Star-Advertiser that he did not know Logan was retiring until 'I heard the announcement on Monday around 4 p.m. ' … But I also had stepped down in January from being chair when my official term had expired and I became a holdover appointment. Officer involved crash in Kalihi leaves man in serious condition
KALIHI, Hawaii (KHON2) — A man is in serious condition following a crash in Kalihi, which involved a Honolulu police officer. Suspects in deadly Makaha shooting make first court appearance According to Honolulu Police Department, the incident happened on June 3 around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Aoao St. and Kamehameha IV Rd. HPD said an on-duty police officer was attempting to turn left from Aoao St. onto Kamehameha IV Rd. when they hit a 21-year-old male motorcyclist who was heading north. As a result of the crash, the motorcyclist was thrown onto the road. Paramedics with Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and took the motorcyclist to the hospital in serious condition. Officials said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
