Centre To Take Steps To Improve National Highways In Tripura: Officials
Agartala: Responding to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha's request, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has directed the top officials to study the condition and to take appropriate steps for the National Highway-8, the state's lifeline, officials said on Wednesday. The National Highway-8 between Assam's Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj) and Tripura's Sabroom sub-division, along Bangladesh, connects the state (Tripura) with the rest of the country through Assam. An official of the Chief Minister's Office said that Saha had earlier informed the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, about the poor condition of certain stretches of the National Highway. In response to the Chief Minister's request, the Union Minister, in a written communication earlier, informed that an official team from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) recently inspected the National Highways. It was stated that a detailed report based on the inspection would be submitted to the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry by August 15. As per the instructions of the Union Minister, the Managing Director of NHIDCL, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, Krishna Kumar, would visit the state on August 10 to review the construction and repair work of various National Highways in Tripura. The Chief Minister has repeatedly drawn the attention of the Union Ministry to the urgent need for renovation of these important alternative highways in the state, the official said. He said that Saha, who holds the PWD portfolio, has also personally discussed the matter several times over the phone with the Union Minister Gadkari. Additionally, the Chief Minister has directed the Secretary of the Public Works Department, Kiran Gitte, to pay special attention to this issue and to take necessary steps in coordination with the central authorities. Tripura currently has six National Highways, and the Centre recently sanctioned a few more National Highways to improve the surface connectivity.

Jharkhand Congress demands Bharat Ratna for Shibu Soren, tribal university in his name
The Jharkhand unit of the Congress on Thursday (August 7, 2025) demanded that former Chief Minister Shibu Soren be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, a tribal university be established in his name, and his residence be declared a heritage site. The party held a condolence meet at the party's state headquarters here and paid tributes to the JMM co-founder, who breathed his last at a private hospital in Delhi on Monday (August 4, 2025). The Congress members, including the state president, ministers, legislators and former ministers, recalled his contributions to Jharkhand and pledged to fulfill his dreams for the state. "The contributions and sacrifices made by Shibu Soren ji for Jharkhand are unforgettable. Therefore, we have written to our two Members of Parliament to request the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna upon him," Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh told reporters after the condolence meet. He said, "We also demand a tribal university in his name and that his residence be declared as a heritage site so that people could see his contributions to the state." Former Union minister Subodhkant Sahay said Soren was a towering tribal leader not only of Jharkhand but also of the country. "We got statehood for Jharkhand because of the struggle of Shibu Soren ji. If today, we can dream of being an MLA, minister, MP or chief minister, it is because of him who created a separate Jharkhand. His contribution is unforgettable," state Health Minister Irfan Ansari said. Congress legislator Rajesh Kachhap said Soren was the guide for the society, especially for the oppressed, deprived and tribals. "He had always been fighting for 'Jal, Jungle and Jamin'. His death is a great loss for all," he said. Congress legislature party leader Pradeep Yadav said the party has pledged to complete the unfulfilled works of the former chief minister.
