Jharkhand Congress demands Bharat Ratna for Shibu Soren, tribal university in his name
The party held a condolence meet at the party's state headquarters here and paid tributes to the JMM co-founder, who breathed his last at a private hospital in Delhi on Monday (August 4, 2025).
The Congress members, including the state president, ministers, legislators and former ministers, recalled his contributions to Jharkhand and pledged to fulfill his dreams for the state.
"The contributions and sacrifices made by Shibu Soren ji for Jharkhand are unforgettable. Therefore, we have written to our two Members of Parliament to request the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna upon him," Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh told reporters after the condolence meet.
He said, "We also demand a tribal university in his name and that his residence be declared as a heritage site so that people could see his contributions to the state."
Former Union minister Subodhkant Sahay said Soren was a towering tribal leader not only of Jharkhand but also of the country.
"We got statehood for Jharkhand because of the struggle of Shibu Soren ji. If today, we can dream of being an MLA, minister, MP or chief minister, it is because of him who created a separate Jharkhand. His contribution is unforgettable," state Health Minister Irfan Ansari said.
Congress legislator Rajesh Kachhap said Soren was the guide for the society, especially for the oppressed, deprived and tribals.
"He had always been fighting for 'Jal, Jungle and Jamin'. His death is a great loss for all," he said.
Congress legislature party leader Pradeep Yadav said the party has pledged to complete the unfulfilled works of the former chief minister.

In his latest letter, the CEO said: 'This is to draw your kind attention to this office communication dated 09-08- 2025, referring to the statements made by you during the Press Conference held on 07-08- 2025 pertaining to alleged inclusion of ineligible voters and exclusion of eligible electors in the Electoral Rolls of Haryana.' The CEO also said: 'It is requested that the signed declaration/oath may be returned to this office within ten (10) days, so that necessary proceedings may be initiated in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Registration of Electoral Rules, 1960.' The Assembly polls in Haryana were held in October 2024 in which the BJP had won 48 seats while the Congress won 31 seats for the 90-member-Vidhan Sabha.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday firmly rejected Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claims that political parties are denied access to digital copies of electoral rolls. Calling his statement 'absolutely false and totally misleading,' the poll panel said both digital and physical versions of the voter lists are regularly shared with recognised political parties. Responding within hours to Gandhi's renewed 'Vote Chori' (vote theft) allegation, the ECI issued a fact-check stating, 'Anyone — any elector or political party — can download the Electoral Rolls for any of the 36 States/UTs through the link: and check for themselves.' The commission explained that under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, every recognised political party receives both draft and final rolls in digital and printed formats before every election. It also stressed that these copies are officially shared under the signatures of election officials, including with the Congress party itself. The clarification came soon after Gandhi launched a website to rally public support for the Congress campaign against alleged voter fraud. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), he urged people to join the fight against 'Vote Chori,' calling it an attack on the core principle of 'one person, one vote.' 'Our demand from the EC is clear be transparent and release digital voter rolls so that people and parties can audit them,' Gandhi wrote, sharing links to join the campaign. At a Bengaluru event on August 8, the Congress MP had also demanded that the ECI provide electronic voter lists for the past decade along with video recordings, warning that withholding such data would amount to concealing electoral fraud. The ECI's swift rebuttal appears aimed at countering any perception of non-transparency ahead of upcoming elections, reiterating that voter lists remain openly accessible to both citizens and political parties, reportedly.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that countries indulging in 'dadagiri" (bullying) on the global stage are able to do so because they are economically strong and have technology. While speaking at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) in Nagpur on Saturday, Gadkari stressed the need to increase India's exports and reduce imports, and also harness science and technology to achieve self-reliance. 'If the rate of our exports and economy increases, then I don't think we will need to go to anyone. Those who are indulging in `dadagiri' are doing so because they are economically strong, and they have technology. If we get better technology and resources, we will not bully anyone, because our culture teaches us that the welfare of the world is most important," he said as quoted by news agency PTI. 'We are facing various problems globally, and the solution to all these problems is science and technology, that is, knowledge, which is a power," he added. Gadkari highlighted that increasing exports and decreasing imports is necessary if India wants to become a 'vishwaguru'. Trump last week had announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on US imports from India — raising the overall duty to 50 per cent. This makes India one of the most heavily taxed trading partners in US history. Trump has railed against India and Russia over the past few days for the trade and energy relations between the two countries and pressured New Delhi to cut its Russian oil purchases. While the reciprocal tariffs have come into force, the additional duties will take effect starting August 27. Meanwhile, India has defended its energy strategy, saying that its crude oil purchases from Russia are 'a necessity compelled by global market conditions" and not a political endorsement of Moscow. It further asserted that the country will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security. The MEA termed the levies as 'unjustified and unreasonable" and called out the double standards of the United States and the European Union over their trade ties with Russia. Earlier today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took a veiled swipe at Trump saying some people are not liking the fast pace of India's growth. Addressing a gathering in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen, the Defence Minister referred to the US administration as 'sabke boss."
