Team behind Adolescence release new BBC revenge thriller with unique twist you can stream in one sitting

Yahoo08-04-2025

The team behind Adolescence have already released their newest show, with the series releasing in full on BBC iPlayer this morning.
The show is a revenge thriller with a unique twist – the main star is deaf and much of the show alternates between spoken English and British Sign Language (BSL).
Adolescence's success has set up the producers of the show for great things, with the series sitting at 9th in Netflix's all-time English-speaking record for viewers.
Jack Thorne, the TV show's writer, has taken on big budget jobs writing Tron 3 and his third Enola Holmes film for Netflix, while Stephen Graham was confirmed to be returning for the Peaky Blinders movie.
The show's production company meanwhile, Warp Films, has already released its next show though – a revenge thriller called Reunion.
The BBC's synopsis of the show reads: 'Reunion is an emotional thriller of revenge and redemption following the journey of Daniel Brennan, played by Matthew Gurney, a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison.'
Joined in the cast by Anne-Marie Duff, Eddie Marsan, and Lara Peake, the series has four hour-long episodes, available to watch on iPlayer now.
Gurney, the lead actor, is deaf, and spoke to the BBC about how his role is different to others he had worked on.
He said that the character of Daniel Brennan was 'on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives'.
The actor went on to say: 'In previous films, deaf and disabled characters have been portrayed in quite stereotypical ways.
"This is different, this portrays a man who is hated within the deaf community.
'That's why I wanted to know more about him, and that's why I wanted to get involved."
Speaking about the character of Daniel, the show's writer William Mager explains he 'grew up in the deaf community' before saying: 'When he kills someone, it means he is excluded from that community, and that's the community that forms his identity.
'It becomes a double prison sentence for Brennan, he is in physical prison, but he finishes his time and is in a different kind of prison.
'That's part of the story, how he deals with that isolation and overcomes the feeling of losing everything.'
The Financial Times gave the show four stars in their review, with particular praise for Gurney's performance.
They said Gurney was 'brilliantly expressive as a man caught between rage and redemption'.
The review ends saying: 'There's enough talent and fresh, hitherto under-represented perspectives here to ensure that this revenge story doesn't feel like a dish served reheated.'

Emmerdale star reveals character was almost 'written out' of ITV soap

An Emmerdale star has opened up on the death of her mother and her 'best friend' saying she 'learned a lot about grief' in the process. Lisa Riley, known for playing Mandy Dingle on the ITV soap, lost her mother in July 2012. The tragedy was just months before she joined BBC dancing show Strictly Come Dancing, where she was paired up with Robin Windsor. Riley credits Windsor for helping her get through the grief and has now opened up on her mother and Windsor's deaths. Really excited to be going on @GMB this coming Thursday 12th June. Launching something very dear to my heart with @Sue_Ryder and discussing what's coming up for Mandy & Paddy in @emmerdale 💛💛💛 #gmb #goodmorning #goodmorningbritain #sueryder #charity #emmerdale #london 💙💙💙 — LISA RILEY (BLUE TICK) (@Reallisariley) June 10, 2025 Robin Windsor died in February last year at the age of 44. The Latin and ballroom dancer was best known for appearing on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. His cause of death was not given. Riley has now opened up on coping with the deaths of Windsor and her mother on ITV's Good Morning Britain. She said: 'I've learned a lot about grief and how to deal with it, and how to be open and to literally ask for help, because it's okay. 'Sometimes people go really within, my brother's that person, we all deal with things differently, and I was pressing the bravado button going, 'I've got to go out and play Mandy Dingle every day, I've got to dress up as Mandy and be funny'. 'There were some days I didn't want to be funny, I'm lucky with the brilliant girls in my dressing room, where we lean on each other, and my work with Sue Ryder, I've realised that there is a helpline out there. 'The internet is brilliant, there are so many places you can go to, Sue Ryder being one of them for help.' She also praised the Emmerdale team for their support, calling them 'phenomenal' after they offered to write out her character to give her time off. Riley added that she wanted to continue working, saying she 'knows it's what Robin would have wanted'. The actress said: 'Me, being me, I didn't want to be at home in my bedroom, or at home thinking about it too much, I had to carry on with my day job. 'But the make-up girls, what people at home won't know when they're watching Emmerdale is I was having my make-up done three times because I couldn't get it together, I couldn't, day in, day out, and work were brilliant, like we know, we'll write you out, we'll give you time off should you need it. Fans have taken to social media to send support to Riley after opening up about her grief. She posted an Instagram reel in support of the Sue Ryder Charity, saying: "You are never ever ever alone with @surerydercharity. Please go to the webpage if you are struggling - there will be someone to listen." One fan replied: "Sending hugs Lisa, how brave you are for sharing your story, your Mum sounds like a wonderful woman." A second added: "This made me cry, bless ur heart, Lisa, your mum would be so proud of the lovely woman you are. Lots of love." A number of characters have left the popular ITV soap this year. Emmerdale legend Lesley Dunlop, who plays Brenda Walker, has left after 16 years. Amazon Prime Video Now Comes With Double the Ads!

It wasn't that long ago that an ad-free experience was the default for streaming services. But companies need to make sure the line keeps going up, and one way to do that is to monetize the audience by serving them ads. Amazon introduced ads to its Prime Video streaming service last year, with the promise that it would be light and unintrusive. Well, time to juice those profits, because Adweek reports that Amazon will double the number of ads that it serves per hour to its viewers. Look at this way, it's confirmation that your time is valuable! Adweek first got wind of Amazon's incoming uptick in ad spots from ad buyers, but Amazon confirmed via a spokesperson that Prime Video will increase its ad runs to 'four to six minutes per hour.' That's double what the company started with when it first added advertisements to its streaming experience back in January 2024. At that point, the company was promising just two to three and a half minutes of ads per hour for marketers. But behind the scenes, it seems this jump was always in the cards, as Adweek reported that Amazon has been telegraphing the increased ad load to investors for a while now. Amazon's decision to insert ads was controversial in the first place, as the company pushed its Prime subscribers who previously enjoyed Prime Video without interruption into an ad-supported tier and required them to pay $3 more per month in order to continue watching without a word from the sponsors. Now those breaks are going to be more frequent—or at least longer. Serving more ads is just the latest in Amazon's efforts to monetize its streaming platform, which it has poured billions of dollars into creating content like 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,' 'The Boys,' and 'Fallout.' Earlier this year, it was reported that the company would introduce auctions for ad spots and more contextual advertisements using its vast amount of market targeting data. All of that is probably great for advertisers but comes at the expense of the user experience. This outcome is inevitable, though, when the only option is more growth. Netflix swore off advertisements for a long time, until it needed to figure out a way to bring in people who weren't subscribed or unsubscribed due to price increases, at which point it introduced its ad-supported tier. And part of the need to make sure there is constant, endless growth, is because these companies start out playing with other people's money, driving down competitors with low prices until they corner a market and then bleed them when they need to show a return on investment. So the content might get worse, and the viewing experience definitely will, but maybe you'll rest easier knowing the investors are getting a solid dividend this quarter. If that doesn't keep them happy, just mention something about AI.

Line-up unveiled for crime writing festival with guest programmer Sir Ian Rankin

Authors Kate Atkinson, Kathy Reichs and Jo Nesbo will be among those appearing at an 'incredibly welcoming' crime writing festival guest programmed by Sir Ian Rankin. The Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival schedule unveiled on Thursday also features Horrible Histories author Terry Deary, doctor turned comedian Adam Kay and broadcasters Steph McGovern, Jeremy Vine and the Rev Richard Coles. Sir Ian, creator of the detective John Rebus, is the first guest programmer for the festival, which takes place in Stirling in September. In a nod to the police officer, the programme also includes James McPherson who made his name in Taggart and narrates the Rebus audiobooks, and former Coronation Street star Gray O'Brien, who recently played Rebus on stage. Scottish writers on the line-up include Chris Brookmyre (with Marisa Haetzman as Ambrose Parry), Denise Mina, Graeme Macrae Burnet, Alex Gray, Lin Anderson and Judy Murray. Sir Ian said he has some experience of programming as he has been involved in a small festival in Cromarty, and he was thrilled everyone he asked to take part in Bloody Scotland agreed. He said: 'You get in touch with writers you admire, you say we've got a festival going on, would you fancy coming along? I'll be interviewing you on stage, and nobody said, no, which is a real thrill. 'So we've got everybody from Philippe Sands, who's a human rights lawyer, talking about human rights violations in South America, to Kate Atkinson talking about Edinburgh and other things as well, Kathy Reichs coming from North America. 'We've got a whisky and music night, which will be fantastic with two musicians who've turned their hands to writing books, and a bunch of other stuff besides.' Sir Ian said the festival includes a wide selection of authors ranging from the cosy to the 'hard-boiled', as well as non-fiction writers. He added: 'It's an incredibly welcoming festival. The fans, the readers, the authors all mingle. There's no differentiation between them because all the authors are also fans.' Festival director Bob McDevitt said: 'It has been an absolute joy working with the legendary Sir Ian Rankin on this year's programme and I think he has helped to deliver one of our strongest-ever line-ups. 'There are so many treats in store for our audiences this year, from established names writing at the very top of their game to brand new voices bringing a different perspective to the crime genre – roll on September.' Others appearing include actor Joey Batey who was in The Witcher on Netflix, Chris Chibnall, creator and writer of Broadchurch, and American crime writer Laura Lippman who will be on stage with Mark Billingham. Fringe events at the festival this year will include a 'Day of the Deid' procession led by Sir Ian and the winners of the two prizes, and Sir Ian's Whisky Night with songs from James Yorkston and Colin MacIntyre. Alan Bett, head of literature and publishing at Creative Scotland said: 'Bloody Scotland brings the big names of crime writing to Stirling each year, and 2025 offers an incredible list of authors, enhanced by Ian Rankin's role as guest programmer. 'Of huge importance is the platforming of emergent writers. Bloody Scotland provides new Scottish authors the opportunity to launch their careers and build readerships, and for Scotland's fans of crime fiction, the chance to find their next favourite book.' The festival takes place in various venues including the Albert Halls, Trinity Church, Central Library and The Golden Lion Hotel in Stirling from September 12-14. Sir Ian previously said: 'Bloody Scotland manages to remain the world's friendliest and most inclusive crime fiction festival while also attracting the biggest and brightest names in the business to the city of Stirling. It's epic.' The author has been involved in Bloody Scotland since its inception, has captained the Scotland crime writers' football team and has led the event's torchlight procession through the streets of Stirling.
