Aston Villa targets young Spanish fullback from Barcelona
Aston Villa targets young Spanish fullback from Barcelona originally appeared on The Sporting News During Barcelona's summer pre-season tour of Asia, manager Hansi Flick has shifted his lineup to comply with La Liga's registration limits, which may leave a couple players, such as 19-year old fullback Hector Fort, searching for playing time elsewhere. When FCB starting centerback Pau Cubarsi went down with an injury in the waning minutes of the club's friendly against Deagu FC, Fort was chosen to fill his spot in the lineup, though he's usually deployed as a proper fullback. In all, Fort accumulated just over 45 minutes of action during the pre-season, and he's at a crucial age where gaining on-field experience is of paramount importance. This has led to the possibility of Fort leaving Barcelona on loan, and several major clubs have shown interest. As of late, however, Aston Villa of the English Premier League has extended overtures to the young Spanish defender in hopes of securing his transfer on a permanent deal. According to Barcelona reporter Lucia Font, Villa have placed a 15 million Euro evaluation on the steady-passing fullback and will be progressing towards a transfer in the coming days. With Barcelona's affinity for injecting youth into its lineup, Fort featured in 17 matches last season with five starts to his credit. During that time, Fort ranked as one of the most accurate defenders in all of La Liga, checking in at the 98th percentile for passes completed and passing accuracy per 90 minutes. After Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Daegu FC on Aug. 4, Flick offered an encouraging message about Fort's development, though he did not indicate what the fullback's future would hold. 'I'm happy with what I saw from Hector Fort,' Flick told Football Espana. 'He trained well and played well the other day. Asia has been a very important part of the preseason for me, and there are ten more days left before we play against Mallorca.' Cardinals starters, including QB Kyler Murray, set to play in preseason against Chiefs
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said on Tuesday that many of his team's starters — including quarterback Kyler Murray — will play Saturday in the team's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Murray hasn't played in a preseason game since 2021. 'I told them last night — they're going to play,' Gannon said. 'I think it's the best thing for our team this year, honestly. I think we're at a good point with our health. We're at a good point with our development.' The third-year coach said he's not sure how long the starters will be on the field against the Chiefs, but it will provide an opportunity to see players in a different environment than camp practice. Arizona has several intriguing position competitions this preseason, particularly along the defensive front. The Cardinals added several veterans during the offseason, including Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell. 'It's live, so I do think that's the best form of evaluation, best form of learning, where growth can take place,' Gannon said. 'I want to see us operate, make sure that we're doing the right things.' The 27-year-old Murray is entering his seventh full season. He started all 17 games last season, throwing for 3,851 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season and is more than 2 1/2 years removed from an ACL injury that caused him to miss parts of the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Arizona finished with an 8-9 record last season, which was a four-win improvement over the previous season. The Cardinals haven't made the playoffs since 2021. Also on Tuesday, second-year receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. returned to the field after missing three practices with knee soreness. Receiver Michael Wilson is still in concussion protocol after a collision with Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker last week. ___ AP NFL:
