After playing in the NFL since 2017, the veteran running back Matt Breida is calling it a career.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Breida intends to file retirement paperwork sometime soon. And when the Miami Dolphins reportedly requested a workout for Breida, the veteran running back turned it down.
The former New York Giants rusher is wrapping up his career just two games shy of 100 appearances during the regular season.
Breida's career started in 2017. Coming out of Georgia Southern, where he appeared in 37 games across three seasons. In the NCAA, Breida took on 542 rushing attempts for 37 touchdowns. He was a two-time First-Team All-Sun Belt recipient.

When Breida went to the NFL, he was an undrafted free agent. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a rookie, becoming Carlos Hyde's backup.
As an UDFA rookie, Breida appeared in 16 games. He took on 105 rushing attempts, totaling 465 yards on the ground. He scored twice as a runner, and reached the endzone in the receiving game once.
During his second season in the NFL, Breida started in 13 games. He rushed for a career-high 814 yards and three touchdowns. He would play in just one more season with the 49ers in 2019. That's when he carried the ball 123 times for 623 yards and one touchdown.
In 2020, Breida was traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a fifth-round pick. He struggled to carve out a role in Miami, taking on just 59 carries for 254 yards in 12 games. After one year with the Dolphins, Breida moved on and signed with the Buffalo Bills for one season. Once again, Breida struggled to find a consistent role, playing in just nine games.
The Giants picked up Breida in 2022 with a one-year contract. At the time, Saquon Barkley was still in the building, which limited Breida to a backup role for 16 of 17 games. With the Giants, he took on just 54 carries in the first year. Breida totaled 220 yards and scored one touchdown. In the receiving game, Breida caught 20 passes for 118 yards.
Nobody knew it yet, but the 2023 season with the Giants ended up being Breida's final go-round in the league. He appeared in 17 games and had just 55 carries. Breida struggled by averaging 2.8 yards per carry. He reached the endzone one time throughout the year, totaling 151 yards.
Last season, Breida attempted to form a reunion with the San Francisco 49ers. Although he was on board for most of training camp, the 49ers released the veteran rusher before they reached September. Breida spent the 2024 NFL season on the free agency market.
Now, he'll call it a career. Breida leaves the game with 2,652 yards and nine touchdowns. He had 120 catches for 935 yards and six touchdowns.

Texans' C.J. Stroud explains why he wore a Mariners hat amid a playoff race vs. the Astros
Houston Texans Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud made headlines for all the right reasons on Saturday afternoon en route to a 20-3 victory over the Carolina Panthers in his preseason debut. In the morning, he was all over the internet for the wrong reasons. While the Texans play in the AFC South, the Houston Astros call the American League West home, sharing the division with the Seattle Mariners. Right now, Seattle is hot and inching closer to leapfrogging the Astros for the division lead heading into September. So, naturally, fans were upset that their city's franchise quarterback donned a Seattle Mariners cap when he entered the stadium on Saturday morning. Twitter was losing its mind seeing the quarterback who already grew up a Dodgers fan wearing a rival's hat. Multiple fans commented on the post, telling Houston to "trade him" away because of the logo. Even the Mariners got in on the conversation, telling Stroud he looked good in the colors. But Stroud laughed at the outcry from fans that there was no rooting interest behind the hat and that the move was merely for style purposes with the rest of his outfit. 'I love hats, I wear hats all the time,' Stroud said with a chuckle. 'It's all about the swag, baby. I'm just kidding.' No, Texans fans, Stroud is rooting for the AL West rivals to move into first place. He mentioned that he pulls for both the Astros and Dodgers and also owns a hat from "probably even team," which backs up the fashion statement theory. Fans probably wouldn't have cared so much if the Astros hadn't just lost to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night while the Mariners secured a win over the New York Mets. But the hat proved to be a bad omen out at Citi Field and a positive sign for the hometown team. Seattle fell in Queens 3-1. Meanwhile, the Astros gained an entire game in the division with a 5-4 victory over the Orioles. As for Stroud's afternoon? He finished 6-of-8 passing for 44 yards and a touchdown pass to Nico Collins in the first quarter before resting after the first quarter. Aaron Glenn: Jets "sloppy" offense "wasn't good enough" vs. Giants
It's a good thing for the Jets that the annual preseason game against the Giants no longer has the Snoopy trophy up for grabs. On Saturday night, the Giants won easily, 31-12. The word of the night for first-year head coach Aaron Glenn was 'sloppy.' That's what he said at halftime, and that's what he said after the game. Sloppy. Undisciplined. Specifically asked about quarterback Justin Field, Glenn said this, via Rich Cimini of 'I don't want to say the same thing over and over. Our offense, in general, wasn't good enough.' Fields completed one of five passes for only four yards. He had one rushing attempt for five yards. He handled two drives, resulting in a punt and a field goal. There's no quarterback competition for the Jets, where Fields is the unquestioned starter. Especially with Tyrod Taylor currently injured. Still, at some point, sloppiness will have consequences.

Cooper Rush throws TD, pick-six in preseason return to AT&T Stadium as Ravens rout Cowboys 31-13
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cooper Rush threw a touchdown pass and a pick-6 in his return to AT&T Stadium, and rookie Tyler Loop kicked five field goals as the Baltimore Ravens beat the Dallas Cowboys 31-13 in preseason action Saturday night. D'Ernest Johnson added a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Ravens (2-0). Loop — expected to replace longtime kicker Justin Tucker, who was released in the offseason following accusations of inappropriate behavior by massage therapists — connected from 53, 52, 42, 36, and 29 yards. He missed once, from 50. Cornerback Andrew Booth intercepted Rush and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Brandon Aubrey kicked field goals of 47 and 36 yards for the Cowboys (0-2). Rush, who spent seven seasons as Dak Prescott's backup in Dallas before signing with Baltimore in free agency, threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Keith Kirkwood on a fourth-down play early in the second quarter. He played the first half, finishing 20 of 30 for 198 yards with two interceptions. Rush's first interception came on a throw behind receiver LaJohntay Wester. Booth grabbed it and raced down the left sideline, dodging tacklers over the final 10 yards. Joe Milton, competing to replace Rush as Prescott's backup, went 9 of 18 for 122 yards and one interception over 3 1/2 quarters. He connected with Jonathan Mingo for a 49-yard gain to set up Aubrey's first field goal. Milton's interception came immediately after Dallas' Kemon Hall picked off a deflected pass. Milton's deep throw from midfield was intercepted in the end zone by safety Reuben Lowrey. Loop's fourth field goal came on a drive extended by a roughing-the-passer penalty against linebacker Darius Harris. Neither Prescott nor Ravens starter Lamar Jackson played. Prescott appeared briefly on the stadium's videoboard, urging fans to make noise before Rush's touchdown pass. Baltimore outgained Dallas 273 yards to 31 in the first half, running 50 plays to the Cowboys' 19. The Ravens had 16 first downs before halftime; Dallas had two. Keyon Martin gave the Ravens a 2-0 lead with a sack of Milton in the end zone on third-and-13 from the Cowboys' 3-yard line. Right guard Tyler Booker, Dallas' first-round draft pick, made his preseason debut and played into the third quarter. Mingo, who led Dallas in receiving yards with his lone 49-yard catch, left in the third quarter with a knee injury. The Cowboys, playing their first home preseason game, held a moment of silence before kickoff for victims of the July 4 flooding in Texas. UP NEXT:
