Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson team up for ‘One Battle After Another'

Express Tribune27-03-2025
The highly anticipated film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, has released its official trailer.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio in his first collaboration with Anderson, the film follows the actor as Bob Ferguson, a quirky revolutionary on a mission to save his daughter.
Inspired by Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland, One Battle After Another features a star-studded cast, including Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Benicio del Toro, Wood Harris, Shayna McHayle, and Chase Infiniti. The film blends dark comedy, political satire, and action, showcasing DiCaprio in a disheveled, eccentric role.
The trailer begins with Bob, dressed in a bathrobe and beanie, struggling to remember codewords while using a payphone to call for backup. Benicio del Toro plays Bob's unconventional mentor, who teaches him how to live without fear—at one point, throwing him from a moving car. The trailer ends with Bob and his allies preparing for battle, shouting 'Viva la revolución!'
Produced by Warner Bros., One Battle After Another was shot on 35mm film using VistaVision cameras, with filming in California and El Paso, Texas. Reports indicate a production budget between $100 million and $140 million, making it Anderson's most expensive film.
This marks DiCaprio's first lead role since Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), while Anderson, an 11-time Oscar nominee, seeks his first Academy Award win. One Battle After Another hits theaters on September 26, with exclusive IMAX screenings.

Darren Aronofsky recalls failed attempt to spark feud between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis

Darren Aronofsky has revealed that he once attempted to create tension between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis while directing Black Swan. The filmmaker admitted his plan to stir rivalry quickly backfired when the actresses realised what he was doing. In an interview with Vogue marking the 15th anniversary of the 2010 ballet drama, Aronofsky recalled, "I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue. Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. They're both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing." Portman remembered feeling isolated during filming, "I remember being separated from Mila and that we weren't in the same space a lot when we weren't shooting. Darren made some comment early on, like, 'Ya know, Nat, Mila's dancing so well.' And I was like, 'Of course she is! She's so f---ing talented and I love her so much and I'm happy she's doing a great job!'" Kunis said she also saw through Aronofsky's attempt: "Darren would tell me, 'Nat is working really, really hard. She's not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off.' Then I would text Nat and she'd be like, '…No, I'm not?' I think that's how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun." Despite the director's strategy, Portman and Kunis remained close friends. Portman went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. A remastered version of Black Swan will return to IMAX cinemas on August 21 and 24.

Russell Crowe reflects on 2005 phone-throwing incident after nearly two decades of silence

Russell Crowe has spoken publicly for the first time in nearly 20 years about the infamous phone-throwing incident that led to his arrest in New York in 2005. The Oscar-winning actor, now 61, expressed regret over the episode in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, saying he has grown from the experience and now values the lessons it taught him. The incident occurred in June 2005 at the Mercer Hotel in Manhattan, where Crowe was staying while promoting his film Cinderella Man. After being unable to make a long-distance call to his then-wife, Danielle Spencer, in Australia, Crowe lost his temper and threw a telephone at a front desk employee, Nestor Estrada. He was arrested and led from the hotel in handcuffs, spending six hours in police custody. Crowe initially faced felony charges but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of third-degree assault. He avoided jail time but paid a reported $100,000 to settle a civil lawsuit filed by Estrada. At the time, Crowe admitted he struggled with anger management and described feeling 'at the bottom of a well.' Now, Crowe has reflected on the experience through both words and music. In the video for his new single Save Me, with his band The Gentlemen Barbers, he alludes to the incident. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, he said, 'At 61, I can forgive my bad days. I absolutely respect regret. Regret is one of the greatest processes.' Crowe added that he has become 'smarter' over the years and more honest with himself. He shared a tongue-in-cheek reference to his time in custody: 'Sometimes you're singing Irish folk songs to the prison officer who is looking after you in jail.' The actor was married to Danielle Spencer from 2003 until their separation in 2012. They finalized their divorce in 2018 and share two sons, Charlie and Tennyson.

Denzel Washington weighs in on cancel culture amid 'Highest 2 Lowest' promotions

Denzel Washington is making his stance on cancel culture clear. The two-time Oscar winner, currently starring in Highest 2 Lowest, told Complex that he does not concern himself with public approval or the risk of being 'canceled.' When asked whether he worried about cancel culture, Washington responded, 'What does that mean — to be canceled?' After the interviewer explained it meant losing public support, Washington replied, 'who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?' He continued, 'I don't care who's following who. You can't lead and follow at the same time, and you can't follow and lead at the same time. I don't follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don't follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain't working out so well.' Washington added, 'You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up. Don't get me started. My chest started hurting. You know, chest is getting tight talking about it.' This interview comes just days after Washington stated he is 'not that interested in Oscars.' Speaking with Jake's Takes, he said, 'I don't care about that kind of stuff. I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.' Highest 2 Lowest opened in theaters this week and begins streaming on Apple TV+ September 5.
