, IIT-Kanpur on Tuesday hosted the 'Rashtra Pratham' programme to salute the valour of the armed forces.
Reaffirming the institute's deep-rooted commitment to the ideals of 'Nation First', the event brought together students, faculty and defence personnel to pay tribute to strengthen the spirit of national service. Prof Braj Bhushan, deputy director, IIT-K, highlighted the institute's leadership not only in academic excellence but also in fostering social responsibility. He also referenced Operation Sindoor, a recent mission symbolising technological and strategic collaboration, and expressed immense pride in the soldiers and the institute's contribution to the nation's defence ecosystem.
Chief guest Brigadier Shabbarul Hasan, Station Commander of Army & Kanpur Cantonment Board, appreciated the partnership between the armed forces and IIT-Kanpur.
He spoke about India's military history, referencing operations such as Cactus, the Indo-Pak wars, and Operation Sindoor, reiterating India's readiness to defend its sovereignty. He also noted the strategic relevance of the Defence Corridor in Kanpur and how it reflects the Army's role in national development.

Cabinet raises upper age limit for govt jobs to 42 years
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The state cabinet meeting, chaired by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Wednesday approved raising the upper age limit for govt service entry from 32 to 42 years. The decision brings relief to thousands of job aspirants across the state. To implement the decision, an amendment will be made to the Odisha Civil Service (Fixation of Upper Age Limit) Rules, 1989, following numerous representations from various quarters requesting age relaxation for govt jobs. However, the new age limit will not apply to positions where a higher age cap is already in place or to uniform services such as police, fire services, forest and excise departments where physical efficiency tests are mandatory. "This decision aims to provide greater opportunities to overage candidates to participate in upcoming recruitment examinations," chief secretary Manoj Ahuja said. The govt arrived at this decision after careful consideration of public demand and current employment scenarios. "The project will significantly contribute to the area's economic growth by attracting more visitors to the sacred Mahima Gadi," said a senior govt official. The cabinet also gave its approval for a crucial concession agreement between the state govt and JSW Utkal Steel Ltd for developing a captive jetty at Jatadhar Muhan. The project, which received initial nod from the High Level Clearance Authority in 2017, involves the construction of an all-weather multi-cargo, greenfield captive jetty in Jagatsinghpur district's Ersama tehsil. The facility will support JSW's upcoming integrated steel plant and captive power plant in the region. "This development aligns perfectly with our Odisha Port Policy 2022, promoting port-led industrial growth through enhanced infrastructure," a govt statement said.

Cash-strapped Maharashtra government OKs Rs 3,000 crore for temples, memorials

This includes clearance for a development plan worth Rs 681.3 crore for the preservation of the memorial to the 18th-century warrior queen Ahilyadevi Holkar at her birthplace in Chaundi village in Ahilyanagar. The project was announced at a cabinet meeting held at Ahilyanagar on May 6 and comes ahead of the ruler's 300th birth anniversary. The work is to be completed over the next three years. At the same cabinet meeting, development plans worth Rs 5,503 crore were cleared for seven major pilgrimage centres in the state. This included Rs 147.8 crore for Ashtavinayak temples, Rs 1,865 crore for the Tuljabhavani temple plan, Rs 259.6 crore for the Jyotiba temple plan, Rs 275 crore for the Trimbakeshwar temple plan, Rs 1,445 crore for the Mahalaxmi Mandir plan, and Rs 829 crore for the Mahurgad development plan. On Wednesday, the government gave administrative approval to four of the seven projects. The Ashtavinayak temples are a key tourist attraction in the state. The same day, a govt resolution was issued approving the expense of Rs 1,865 crore for the development plan of the Tuljabhavani temple at Tuljapur. Devotees come throughout the year to pray at the temple, especially during the Navratri festival. The state has issued instructions to preserve the original style of the historical structures in the temple. The state also issued a govt resolution approving the development plan for Jyotiba temple at Kolhapur worth Rs 259.6 crore. This includes plans for the conservation and renovation of the temple as well as surrounding lakes. The project is supposed to be completed by March 31, 2027.

He said social media profiles "are being scrutinised more closely," a practice that, while not new, has now intensified. US secretary of state Marco Rubio has in a recent cable to US embassies indicated the need to widen screening of foreign students for social media activity that promotes anti-semitism or indicates a desire to participate in political movements.
