BJP has initiated a three-day leadership training camp in Manpat, Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: In an initiative to bridge tribal outreach and bolster local governance, the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) kicked off a three-day leadership training camp on Monday in Manpat, popularly referred to as 'Chhattisgarh's Shimla.' The high-profile event, led by BJP national president
J P Nadda
, is expected to conclude with a valedictory address by Union Home Minister
Amit Shah
.
The camp has drawn several senior leaders from both state and national levels, including chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, deputy chief minister Vijay Sharma, ten state ministers, 44 MLAs, and ten BJP MPs. CM Sai, deputy CM Sharma, MP Brijmohan Agrawal and MLA Sunil Soni arrived in Ambikapur by the Durg–Ambikapur Express on Sunday night and were escorted to Manpat by convoy on Monday morning.
Nadda is scheduled to land at Darima's Maa Mahamaya Airport via a special aircraft and will travel to Manpat by helicopter.
Organisers stated that the camp is exclusively intended for lawmakers and MPs and focuses on professional training related to governance, policy outreach, and public engagement.
Speaking at the event, CM Sai said the training will include 12 thematic sessions delivered by national experts, including Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and B L Santosh. He added that the initiative would open 'new dimensions of development' for Chhattisgarh.

Local Touch and Camp Activities
The camp also embraces local culture and cuisine, serving regional dishes such as 'lakda flower chutney' and millet-based meals, in support of the 'vocal for local' campaign. The daily programme includes yoga sessions in the scenic surroundings, healthy breakfasts, interactive training modules, cultural evenings, and visits to local sites such as the Tibetan temple.
Political Context and Reactions
Manpat, located in the Sarguja district—a region historically affected by Maoist activity and predominantly inhabited by tribal communities—has been strategically chosen as the venue. State Finance Minister O P Chaudhary noted that such events highlight local identity and promote cultural recognition.
However, Congress state communications chief Sushil Anand Shukla criticised the camp, calling it 'political tourism.' He alleged that the purpose of the event is to teach leaders 'how to use corrupt funds without getting caught.'

Beyond Political Divide: When BJP, Congress leaders shared stage to award Tazia makers

On Sunday, two senior leaders, one each from the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, attended a Tazia procession being carried out by the Muslim community members on the occasion of Muharram in Surat. During the procession, Gujarat BJP Chief and Union Minister for Jal Shakti C R Paatil attended the procession with Mayor Daxesh Mavani, City BJP President Paresh Patel, and the party's municipal corporators, among others. Tazias with best designs were handed out trophies by Paatil. Former Surat Mayor and senior Congress leader Kadir Pirzada shared the stage with Paatil as the latter recalled instances from the past such as allotment of a piece of land for installing a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj when Pirzada was the Surat mayor or when, following their joint efforts, two public events — celebration of the birth anniversary of the Maratha warrior king and Tazia processions — were held peacefully in Limbayat area of the city. Meanwhile, a former Congress MLA of Savarkundla in Amreli district attended a Tazia procession, a video of which went viral on social media. Speaking to The Indian Express, Dudhat said, 'As a public leader and someone belonging to a party that follows secularism, I participate in both Tazia procession as well as festivals of other religions every year. The video which went viral is of Limdi Chowk, in Savarkundla town of Amreli district, on Sunday afternoon. As a public leader, I got an invitation and not only did I remain present, I also participated in the rituals. During Hindu festivals, the Muslims also took an active part, giving water and soft drinks to the people participating in the Hindu procession.' He further said, 'It is a norm in villages in Gujarat where both Hindus and Muslims participate in each other's religious activities. I have done nothing new.'

Crores of workers will join July 9 strike, claim trade unions

About 30-40 crore workers and farmers will participate in the general strike on Wednesday (July 9, 2025), claimed leaders of 10 central trade unions in New Delhi on Monday (July 7, 2025) while addressing a joint press conference. The leaders said preparations for the strike were complete and workers had supported the 17-point charter of demands of the strike, called against the Union government's policies. 'The economic policies are resulting into more unemployment, rising price rise of essential commodities, depression in wages, cut in social sector spending in education, health, basic civic amenities, all this leading to more inequalities and miseries for the poor, lower income group and even middle classes. The government has abandoned the welfare state status of our country and is working in the interest of foreign and Indian corporates and it is so evident from its policies being pursued vigorously,' the trade union leaders said. In a statement, they said the trade unions had been fighting against the privatisation of public sector enterprises and public services, the policies of outsourcing, contractualisation and casualisation of workforce, against the anti-workers, pro-employer four Labour Codes meant to suppress and cripple the trade union movement, increase in working hours, to snatch their right to collective bargaining, right to strike, decriminalisation of violation of labour laws by employers, while criminalising the activities of trade unions etc. 'The government is making false claims on employment and provisions of social security. The existing social security schemes are being weakened and attempts to bring private players into it are pushed,' they said. They added that unions in the coal and minerals sectors, steel, banking and insurance sectors, power, petroleum and telecom industries and the transport sector have given notices for the strike. 'We are making continued efforts forging unity and solidarity between the two major productive forces of the country, the workers and farmers,' they said.

Lakshmimidevi Fair turns political playground as BJP rebels gather in Gokak

Belagavi: The grand Lakshmimidevi fair, returning to Gokak town after a decade and drawing lakhs of devotees over the past week, turned into a political centre on Monday with the gathering of several BJP rebels. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Responding to an invitation by Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, a group of BJP dissenters—including MLA BP Harish and former MLAs Arvind Limbavali, Kumar Bangarappa, Shrimant Patil, and Mahesh Kumathalli—gathered in Gokak and jointly offered prayers to the deity. Later, they held a meeting at the residence of Ramesh Jarkiholi. Speaking to media, former minister Kumar Bangarappa said, "We came on the invitation of Ramesh Jarkiholi." When asked about the possibility of any change in the BJP state leadership, he cautiously responded, "We better wait," and declined to comment on whether political discussions took place during the gathering. However, former Athani MLA Mahesh Kumathalli made a striking remark in support of expelled BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal. "If Yatnal is not taken into confidence, the BJP will face serious trouble," he said. The gathering of rebels and Kumathalli's open endorsement of Yatnal have triggered fresh speculation and debate in state political circles.
