Marc Marquez takes seventh pole of season at German MotoGP

Championship leader Marc Marquez claimed pole position in qualifying at the Sachsenring on Saturday for the German MotoGP and sprint race.
In rainy conditions the Ducati factory rider will start from the front of the grid for the seventh time this season and for the eighth time out of 10 in the elite category at one of his favourite circuits.
Alongside the Spaniard on the front row for Saturday's 15-lap sprint and main race 24 hours later were France's Johann Zarco (Honda-LCR) and Marco Bezzecchi (ITA/Aprilia).
This was Marquez's seventh pole from 11 this season and he will be hot favourite to steal the show once again at the Sachsenring where he is targeting a ninth success from 10 grands prix.
Alex Marquez, placed second in the riders' standings, 68 points behind his older brother, is on the second row.
Former two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia, however, had a torrid time setting only the 11th fastest time, relegating the other Ducati factory rider back to the fourth row of the grid

Alex Palou captures fourth IndyCar title in past five years
Will Power may have won the battle in Sunday's IndyCar series race at Portland International Raceway, but Alex Palou unmistakably captured the war. Power crossed the line first, winning the Penske Fleet's first race of the year, but Palou clinched his fourth IndyCar Series championship over the last five seasons for Chip Ganassi Racing with a third-place finish. With three races left going into Sunday, the only contender left for Palou to vanquish to earn the Astor Cup was Pato O'Ward. O'Ward had the pole, but the 28-year-old Spaniard enjoyed a 121-point lead over his closest rival and needed to leave Portland ahead by 108 points to sew up the title. The die was cast just 22 laps into the race when O'Ward encountered an electronic issue and made an unplanned pit stop in his Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. The long delay in the pits caused O'Ward to re-enter the track nine laps behind the leaders and he would finish 10 laps down at a distant 25th. Despite the knowledge that the title was his, Palou raced aggressively in the final laps of the race. 'We're here to win. That's why we're here. We've said it many times. When we come here, though we have that big goal of winning the championship, our priority is always to win races and win every single weekend,' Palou said. 'Even though [it] could have been OK to stay third, we wanted to win.' Palou only trails AJ Foyt and Scott Dixon, who won seven and six series championships respectively. His three consecutive titles have tied Dario Franchitti (2009-11), Sebastien Bourdais (2004-07) and Ted Horn (1946-48). The 2025 eight-time winner still has two races left to tie the IndyCar record for victories in a season set at 10 by Foyt in 1964 and Al Unser in 1970.

Alcaraz battles through, Shelton advances in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Carlos Alcaraz had to fight his way out of a second-set slump on Sunday to escape with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Damir Dzumhur in his opening match at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard, playing his first tournament since a runner-up finish to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, raced through the first set but completely lost his way in the second, dropping his serve twice against the 33-year-old Bosnian. But he regained his intensity -- and cut down his errors, in the third. Alcaraz fired his seventh ace to set up a match point and advanced to the third round seconds later as his opponent fired wide. Alcaraz, seeded second, claimed his 12th consecutive match at the Masters 1000 level after titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. "It was a relief to get this win," Alcaraz said after committing 44 unforced errors. "It was a rollercoaster of good feelings and bad feelings. "I was happy to get the win in the end. I know that I have chances to do better. "I will use the day off tomorrow to get my confidence back. It was a little tricky, I need to play smart tennis." Alcaraz, runner-up in Cincy in 2023, next faces Serb Hamad Medjedovic, a 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) winner over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. American Ben Shelton, coming off his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto, eased through his opener 6-3, 3-1 as opponent Camilo Ugo Carabelli was unable to continue because of a right knee problem. The Argentine who beat Kei Nishikori in the first round, pulled up short after the first point of the third game of the second set, gripping his knee. With a tournament supervisor translating from Spanish, the South American then took a medical time out. Once back, he only lasted three more points. Shelton had less than an hour on court, something of a favor after a draining Toronto tournament which only ended on Thursday. "It's not easy to play a couple of days after winning any title," he said. "I feel for Camilo. I hope he has a quick recovery. "I wanted to compete and be a warrior this week - see what I could do," said Shelton, adding when asked about tape on his right thigh that he has "a few muscle things.

Florian Wirtz named Germany's Player of the Year
Liverpool's club-record signing Florian Wirtz has been named Germany's player of the year, further cementing the attacking midfielder's status as a rising star. Wirtz, whose £100 million ($134 million) transfer fee with add-ons could rise to £116 millon in what would be a British record, secured 191 votes among German sports journalists, putting him comfortably ahead of runner-up Michael Olise of Bayern Munich, who garnered 81 votes. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in June, part of a spending spree that has seen players including French forward Hugo Ekitike and Hungarian leftback Milos Kerkez join the squad as Liverpool bid to retain the Premier League title. Wirtz has been hailed as one of the "top players in the world. He is world class," by former Leverkusen coach and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is the new boss of Real Madrid. After joining, Wirtz told Liverpool's website that he "would like to win everything every year!" "In the end, we want to be successful," he said.
