Alex Palou captures fourth IndyCar title in past five years
Power crossed the line first, winning the Penske Fleet's first race of the year, but Palou clinched his fourth IndyCar Series championship over the last five seasons for Chip Ganassi Racing with a third-place finish.
With three races left going into Sunday, the only contender left for Palou to vanquish to earn the Astor Cup was Pato O'Ward. O'Ward had the pole, but the 28-year-old Spaniard enjoyed a 121-point lead over his closest rival and needed to leave Portland ahead by 108 points to sew up the title.
The die was cast just 22 laps into the race when O'Ward encountered an electronic issue and made an unplanned pit stop in his Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. The long delay in the pits caused O'Ward to re-enter the track nine laps behind the leaders and he would finish 10 laps down at a distant 25th.
Despite the knowledge that the title was his, Palou raced aggressively in the final laps of the race.
'We're here to win. That's why we're here. We've said it many times. When we come here, though we have that big goal of winning the championship, our priority is always to win races and win every single weekend,' Palou said. 'Even though [it] could have been OK to stay third, we wanted to win.'
Palou only trails AJ Foyt and Scott Dixon, who won seven and six series championships respectively. His three consecutive titles have tied Dario Franchitti (2009-11), Sebastien Bourdais (2004-07) and Ted Horn (1946-48). The 2025 eight-time winner still has two races left to tie the IndyCar record for victories in a season set at 10 by Foyt in 1964 and Al Unser in 1970.

'Bring back Jose Riveiro!' – Pirates faithful lose patience with Ouaddou
Orlando Pirates supporters are calling on the club's management to recall Jose Riveiro after the team suffered back-to-back league defeats. Under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers have lost their opening two Betway Premiership matches. This past weekend, Pirates went down 1-0 to Sekhukhune United. On Tuesday evening, many expected the Sea Robbers to bounce back against Marumo Gallants but were humiliated 2-1 despite scoring first. The defeat leaves Ouaddou's men right at the bottom after two matches. Orlando Pirates fans are calling for Riveiro Jose Riveiro coached Pirates from 2022 until 2025 where he went on to win five trophies with the Soweto giants. His contract ended in June and the Spaniard opted not to renew, and instead, he joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Ouaddou was named as his replacement and many Bucs faithful saw him as the man who would finally help the club get over the line and win the league title. With two matches played, the Sea Robbers have nothing to show for and supporters are frustrated. After Orlando Pirates defeat to Gallants, many supporters took to social media to ask the management to bring back Riveiro. @ka_madesi wrote: 'This guy found a well oiled machine. He then takes people who carried this team and put them in the grandstands.' @tdyani wrote: 'Jose Riveiro's work completely undone in just 3 matches. Unbelievable.' @RozmolaThato wrote: 'Something is not right with Orlando Pirates. I think Jose Riveiro must come back and be reappointed again. this is so sad and humiliating.' 'We undermined how much Jose Riveiro held this team together. We literally have no brain… Just a team with parts moving aimlessly,' tweeted @NeoMabuya_ Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Orlando Pirates news: Kimvuidi silent departure, Riveiro's struggle
Orlando Pirates have reportedly parted ways with Congolese midfielder Karim Kimvuidi in the past few days. The 23-year-old former Maritzburg United star made a surprise appearance for Israeli Premier League side FC Ashdod over the weekend, while still listed on the Buccaneers squad for the 2025/26 season. Kimvuidi was heavily linked with a move to JS Kabylie of Algeria but it seemed that did not materialise and the Congolese instead moved to Israel. Orlando Pirates are yet to announce his departure and perhaps he could be on loan to Israel. New Bucs coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has admitted that he would like to trim his squad down to manage it better. Having lost his first league match as Pirates coach, the Moroccan will start feeling the heat. Speaking of pressure, one man who is under pressure is former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro. The 49-year-old Spaniard left the Sea Robbers to join Al Ahly but his time in Egypt has not been smooth sailing. 'We could have lost the match, but we drew. I know the draw doesn't please Al Ahly fans,' Riveiro said following Red opening league draw.. 'I will not comment on Egyptian media — you have full freedom to analyse and comment, but I will not comment on the media here,' he added. The Spaniard was asked why he did not play Achraf Dari in his team, but he maintained that he only chose a team that's good enough to win. 'Why didn't you ask me about El Shenawy not playing? I have great respect for Al Ahly's culture, which is about winning only,' Riveiro said. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Why it's folly to write off Manchester City's title chances after last season's blip
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City look ready to challenge for the Premier League crown again, combining fresh signings with experienced stars like Rodri and Erling Haaland. Photo: AFP Image: AFP While much of the speculation ahead of this weekend's kick-off of the English Premier League has focused on champions Liverpool's title defence and their massive spending spree, there has been little attention on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Most analysts seem to have written off the Citizens as title contenders, but given their recent history, that would be premature. City have won six Premier League titles since the Spaniard took over, including four successive wins from 2020 to 2024 — a first in the history of the EPL. The last time they surrendered the championship to the Reds, in the 2019/20 season, they bounced back emphatically to reclaim the title. It seems strange, then, that last season's runners-up Arsenal and Chelsea, who finished fourth, are more frequently listed among Liverpool's strongest potential title rivals — despite City finishing above Chelsea last season and just three points behind the Gunners. Chelsea are trading on their heroics at the Fifa Club World Cup, a competition where Pep's charges did not exactly cover themselves in glory. Arsenal are strongly tipped to finally shed their bridesmaids tag, with the addition of star striker Viktor Gyökeres seen as the missing piece of their puzzle. They have also strengthened in midfield and defence. The verdict from the independent commission on City's more than 100 financial charges is still pending, and that may be clouding people's judgement. Guardiola has seemingly been unhindered in the transfer market, with a host of quality signings including midfielder Tijjani Reinders from AC Milan, Wolves left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri, winger Rayan Cherki of Olympique Lyon, and Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford, as part of a long-overdue refresh of an ageing squad. Manchester City's Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne's exit has left a huge void in Pep Guardiola's team. Image: Glyn Kirk/AFP Among the high-profile exits was that of midfield icon Kevin De Bruyne, a key component of Pep's remarkable title run. His departure left a huge hole in Pep's team that may require both Reinders and Cherki to fill. The Etihad side still boasts plenty of quality players throughout the squad, including defensive midfield lynchpin Rodri. In fact, it was the Spanish ace's absence that was blamed for last season's woes. A fit and firing Rodri is still arguably among the best in his position in the world, and City fans will be hoping that his current injury absence will not be as damaging. Then there is Erling Haaland, who has taken the Premier League by storm with his goalscoring numbers since arriving in 2022. The lethal Norwegian striker, who has two Golden Boots already for the club, had a below-par last season by his lofty standards. He still finished on 22 league goals and will no doubt be fired up again to prove himself this campaign against a number of new rivals and old foes like Liverpool's Mo Salah, who was top scorer last season. Fellow forward Omar Marmoush also offers the perfect foil to Haaland, but Brazilian winger Savinho is said to be on his way out. Attacking midfielder Phil Foden will also have a point to prove at the Etihad after failing to reach the heights of previous campaigns. The arrival of Aït-Nouri has added defensive and attacking quality to a City backline boasting standout Josko Gvardiol among other established stars. The Frenchman fitted seamlessly into the City squad at the Club World Cup in the US. City also seem determined to hold on to their young stars and build for the future, having rejected bids for James McAtee and Argentine wonderkid Claudio Echeverri in this transfer window. If you add Pep's proven drive and tactical genius to the exciting blend of upcoming talent and established stars, as well as his ability to evolve his team's playing style, you have the makings of another potential title-winning campaign. Just like Liverpool's win last year, it would be one few would have seen coming.
