With Iveco in its kitty, Tata Motors set to expand global truck footprint

Time of India2 days ago
New Delhi: It was a little over two decades ago, 2004 to be precise, when Tata Motors acquired Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company. This was seen as a big step forward in its endevaour to become a global truck and bus maker.
The company has now gone one step further with the recent acquisition of Italy's Iveco Group for €3.8 billion (approx ₹38,240 crore). The deal includes Iveco's truck, bus, and powertrain operations, as well as its financial services arm.
'The Daewoo acquisition helped us understand how to compete with global CV giants, as Daewoo operates in a market alongside players like Daimler, Volvo, and Traton,' Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors Ltd, told ETAuto during a media briefing on Thursday.
He added that the Korean venture also served as a proving ground for cross-border synergies. 'For instance, all of Daewoo's medium and heavy-duty trucks use a cabin developed in India and jointly adapted for the Korean market. Even our entry into the light-duty segment there was built on Indian-developed aggregates.'
'With that experience, we've built strong capabilities in cross-cultural integration and collaborative product development, and we intend to scale significantly as we begin our journey with Iveco,' Wagh said.
Hinting at the significant potential the current deal could unlock for Tata Motors, Group CFO PB Balaji remarked, 'I know many are seeing this as simply putting two and two together, but if two and two only make four, we have a problem.' What excites him more, he added, is the prospect of two and two becoming six, eight, or even twenty-two, if the companies can truly unlock the synergy and scale.
Strategic focus
The Mumbai-based automaker plans to operate its commercial vehicle business as a unified entity. Iveco's portfolio will be introduced in India, while Tata's products will gain wider access to global markets, supported by integrated sales, service, and distribution networks. The company will also explore platform sharing and convergence in future product development to optimise R&D investments.
'However, drawing from its JLR experience, Tata Motors intends to retain Iveco's brand identity, customer interface, and distribution channels as independent to preserve market-specific strengths,' he said.
With this deal, Tata is looking to tap into 'premium customer segments and cohorts' that the company currently does not address. Balaji noted that Iveco's investments in advanced technologies like powertrains, SDVs, and ADAS are ahead of the curve.
Its alliances with Ford Otosan for cabin development and Hyundai Motor Company for fuel cells will offer Tata Motors strong tech leverage amid the industry's ongoing transition.
Labour integration
As part of the acquisition terms, Tata Motors has agreed to a set of non-financial covenants that will remain in force for two years post-deal closure.
'There is no overlap in the industrial footprint, so the strategic rationale itself ensures job security,' Balaji said.
'Iveco will continue to take decisions required to remain competitive under its own 'Unlimited Pathways' framework. The transaction neither accelerates nor impairs that direction. We remain neutral from that standpoint,' he added.
In a joint statement, Italy's Chigi Palace and the Council of Ministers welcomed the Tata Motors-Iveco deal, calling it 'a major industrial transaction' that opens new growth avenues for Iveco Group and its workforce.
Iveco's legacy
Iveco was spun off from the Fiat Group in 2009 as part of Fiat Industrial, later becoming part of CNH Global, and finally emerging as a separately listed entity in 2022.
Its key manufacturing hubs are located in Italy, Spain, and Brazil. The company operates across four main business segments, with its truck division being the largest contributor, generating around €10 billion in revenue in CY2024, with an EBIT margin of 5.6 per cent.
Iveco holds approximately 11 per cent market share across the European Union and Latin American markets. In the bus segment, the company reported revenues of €2.6 billion last year with an EBIT margin of 5.5 per cent, making it the second-largest bus manufacturer in Europe. It operates across city, intercity, and minibus segments, with production facilities in the Czech Republic and France.
The powertrain division, FPT Industrial, posted €3.5 billion in revenue in CY2024 with a 6.2 per cent EBIT margin. FPT is currently the fifth-largest engine manufacturer globally, with most of its production centered in Italy.
In powertrains, the Italian company aims to be the 'last man standing' in internal combustion engines (ICEs), while also making significant recent investments in electric drivetrains. Excluding defence, Iveco reported revenues of €14 billion.

'US Tariffs Will Hurt Andhra Aqua Farmers, We Will Help Them': Chandrababu Naidu

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh is exploring options to ensure the fallout of the US imposing 25 per cent tariffs on India does not affect the state's aqua farmers, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said on Saturday. Addressing farmers for the first time since US President Donald Trump announced the tariff hike, Mr Naidu in his first comment on the US tariff hike said the state government is supporting aqua farmers by giving them electricity at 1.50 paise per unit. "The increase in tariffs in America will burden the aqua farmers in the state," he said. "We have taken note of the matter and we will discuss it with farmers in a day or two. Then we will make an action plan." The chief minister said fishermen were given Rs 10,000 earlier. "But now we will give Rs 20,000 each. We have given financial aid to 1.30 lakh people under the Matsyakarula Sevalo," he added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said the welfare of farmers, small industries and young people remains the government's "top priority" as the country stays on track to become the world's third-largest economy. At an event in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency, the prime minister reaffirmed the resilience of the Indian economy amid turbulence triggered by the US tariff hike, saying India must remain vigilant about its economic interests and adopt "swadeshi (indigenous)" products. "There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests. India is going to become the third biggest economy in the world and this is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned," PM Modi said. Apart from the tariffs, Mr Trump announced a penalty on India for buying Russian oil.

Indian Army makes big defence deal, will buy 212 tank transporter trailers that will enhance military operational capability

(Image: ANI) New Delhi: The Indian Army on Friday, 1 August, signed an agreement of Rs 223.95 crore with Axiscades Aerospace and Technologies Private Limited. Under this, 212 state-of-the-art 50-tonne tank transporter trailers will be purchased. This deal is an important step towards increasing the operational mobility capability of the army and supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. This agreement was signed under the Indian-IDDM category. This agreement gives priority to indigenous design, development and manufacturing. This will strengthen self-reliance in the defence sector. These trailers are equipped with hydraulic/pneumatic ramps and steerable and liftable axles. These will make it easier to transport tanks and armoured vehicles to difficult areas. These trailers will add to the operational strength of the army and greatly enhance the logistics and operational capabilities of the army, and will act as a force multiplier. This deal will boost the indigenous defence manufacturing sector and will also create permanent employment opportunities. This is a sign of strong preparation for future challenges. Earlier, the Indian Army conducted the high-tech Divya Drishti exercise in Sikkim on 28 July. The exercise, conducted in the high-altitude areas of East Sikkim, tested new technologies designed to improve battlefield awareness, real-time surveillance and quick decision-making. The soldiers of the Tri Shakti Corps used a combination of ground-based systems and aerial platforms, including UAVs and drones, to execute real scenarios. Its special feature was the use of AI sensors. These sensors were connected to advanced communication systems. This arrangement ensured smooth and secure data flow between the command centres and helped in increasing situational awareness as well as making accurate decisions, i.e. a strong sensor-to-shooter link was created.

Tariff resilience: India's domestic demand shields economy from tariff shocks, says BoB chief economist

India's limited dependence on exports and strong domestic demand will help it weather the impact of recently imposed US tariffs, said Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda . Speaking at a webinar, Sabnavis argued that India's non-export-oriented growth model provides resilience amid rising global protectionism. 'Since we are not an export-oriented economy, it is becoming advantageous for us because we are more dependent on domestic consumption,' he said, quoted ANI. The comments come days after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods along with an unspecified penalty, despite earlier expectations of a bilateral trade deal. The move is part of Trump's broader tariff push under his April 2, 2025 executive order, which imposes reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% across trade partners. Bank of Baroda has projected GDP growth of 6.4% to 6.6% for FY26, a forecast that already factors in potential export disruptions. According to BoB estimates, a 10% drop in exports would shave about 0.2 percentage points off GDP. India's exports account for 21% of GDP, with services contributing nearly half of that — a composition that makes the country less vulnerable to goods tariffs. 'India's significant reliance on service exports cushions the economy in this volatile tariff environment,' Sabnavis added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable, please help! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo BoB expects India's current account deficit to remain below 1% of GDP despite the tariff shock. While about 10% of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) basket could see imported inflation, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is not expected to rise in the near term. Trade data presented during the webinar showed that India's export exposure to the US is relatively high at 19.8%, while imports from the US account for just 6.3%. Sectors such as electronics, marine products, readymade garments, gems and jewellery, chemicals and poultry are among the most vulnerable. BoB analysts noted that clarity is awaited on potential exemptions, which could mitigate some of the impact. 'Some industries may face higher input costs, which could impact profit margins,' the bank said in its presentation.
