SEPANG: The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) services specifically for e-hailing by Grab Malaysia is expected to improve the quality of the transportation system at the country's main entry points, thus supporting the sustainable mobility agenda in line with national aspirations. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry (MOT) fully supports Grab Malaysia's initiative and is committed to expediting the country's transition to a cleaner, more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system. Grab Malaysia today also launched its 'EV-only ride' services as a booking option in the Grab application, and also set up an EV Lounge at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as an added convenience for users of its premium EV services. 'The selection of KLIA as the launch location is very strategic, not only because of the high passenger traffic but also because it provides maximum exposure to domestic and international users regarding Malaysia's efforts to enhance green mobility,' he said. Speaking at the Grab EV launch here today, Loke said that public-private collaboration is the key to successfully accelerating the use of EVs nationwide. According to him, the launch of Grab Malaysia's new initiative is a catalyst to expanding EVs nationwide, not just in the Klang Valley, but also in other major cities such as Johor Bahru, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
Advertisement 'The latest MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Grab and several strategic partners, including EV providers and charging companies recently, reflects the conformity of the industry with the country's aspirations. 'The MOT will continue to support such efforts and we urge more industry players to step forward and play their part in the country's decarbonisation agenda,' he said. Through the National Transport Policy 2019-2030 and the Ministry of Transport Strategic Plan 2021-2025, Loke said electric vehicles have been identified as one of the main pillars to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the use of green technology. Efforts being taken or will be implemented by the government include tax exemptions an incentives for EV purchases, installation of EV chargers and the use of renewable energy in the transport sector. Other efforts include the implementation of low carbon zones in urban areas and the provision of more widespread EV charging infrastructure, including on highways, shopping malls and airports. Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia director of country operations and mobility Rashid Shukor said the new initiative supports Malaysia's green mobility push with the introduction of an EV-only ride option for airport tourists. 'By prioritising routes with high visibility and demand like KLIA, we intend to demonstrate the practicality and comfort of EVs, while increasing awareness among users. 'This launch marks an important achievement is transforming the foundation of on-demand public transport towards low- or zero-emission modes, making sustainable mobility more accessible to both our driver-partners and passengers,' he said. Grab EV will use BYD M6 electric vehicles, a seven-seater electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that offers passengers a quieter and smoother travel experience.

Airlines still prefer Subang

Bouncing back: A file photo of Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport. Loke (pic, below) said while certain airlines have moved operations out of the airport, others have expressed interest in establishing a presence there. — ART CHEN/The Star PETALING JAYA: Although certain airlines have moved their jet operations out of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang, others have expressed interest in establishing a presence there, says the Transport Minister. 'There are airlines moving out but there are also airlines making enquiries to set up presence in SZB jet operations, not to mention airlines looking to expand their jet operations there,' Anthony Loke told The Star. FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd (Firefly) moved its jet flights out of SZB on Tuesday. It will, however, continue to operate its turboprop services there. Firefly is the second airline to move its jet operations out of the airport after AirAsia relocated all of its jet services to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in April. Loke said the development does not mean a pause in the Subang Airport Regeneration Plan (SARP). 'The way forward for SARP will depend on how Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is going to spearhead the project following its privatisation. 'We are giving MAHB the space to focus first on KLIA as a priority post privatisation. In the meantime, the Business Aviation and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) plans at Subang Airport will continue to be developed,' he said when asked if the airlines moving out had any links with the SARP. From the ministry's standpoint, Loke said SZB's prospects are still very bright. 'I still have full confidence in its potential as a Premium Airport and Private Jet Hub,' he said. It was reported that Batik Air was one of the airlines vying for more slots at SZB. Last month, it launched direct services between Bangkok and Subang, and direct flights between Subang and Kuching. With the launch of Bangkok and Kuching flights, Batik Air now operates five direct routes from Subang. The SARP aims to transform SZB into a leading city hub by 2030, positioning it as a key player in the national aviation and tourism industry. The 10-year SARP is expected to cost RM3.7bil through to completion in 2030.

Grab Malaysia urges balanced regulations in upcoming Gig Workers Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: Grab Malaysia has urged the government to ensure the upcoming Gig Workers Bill contains well-crafted regulations that reflect gig work realities rather than rushed measures. The company stated that the proposed legislation should follow three guiding principles of flexibility, balance, and innovation. 'We remain committed to collaborative efforts to ensure that regulations are thoughtfully crafted to reflect the realities of gig work, prioritising good regulations, rather than rushed regulations, for the benefit of all stakeholders,' it said. Grab expressed support for regulations protecting worker flexibility and income opportunities within the gig economy. The company cautioned that excessive regulation could potentially stifle innovation, disrupt operations, and reduce gig opportunities, particularly for smaller players facing high compliance costs. Regarding its call for balance, Grab emphasized the bill must contain clear, fair, and inclusive provisions. 'A thorough regulatory impact assessment and gradual policy implementation is essential to avoid unintended consequences such as higher consumer costs or reduced gig worker earnings,' it said. Grab stressed the importance of innovation and collaboration for a more thoughtful and data-driven regulatory approach. The company highlighted that closer cooperation between regulators, platforms, and gig workers remains essential for building long-term sustainability. Grab emphasized the framework must be fair and inclusive for all gig work types, not just platform-based jobs. 'By working together, we intend to co-create a framework that not only protects gig workers but also drives innovation and inclusive growth for years to come,' it said. – Bernama
