Maybe Happy Ending' leads Tony nominees

Express Tribune02-05-2025

Broadway musicals Maybe Happy Ending, Buena Vista Social Club and Death Becomes Her led the tally of Tony Award nominations, each with 10, when they were announced on Thursday ahead of the June 8 awards ceremony.
The 78th annual Tony Award nominations, celebrating the best in Broadway theatre, reflect a season shaped by unique storytelling and genre experimentation with new works that push boundaries in form, subject and perspective.
Previous Tony Award winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce announced the awards.
Maybe Happy Ending is a story about obsolete robots in a futuristic Seoul; Buena Vista Social Club brings the iconic Cuban musical collective's story to the stage, and Death Becomes Her is based on a dark comedy film.
In the Best Play category, nominees include John Proctor Is the Villain, which draws on The Crucible to examine teenage self-discovery in the #MeToo era; Oh, Mary!, the much-talked-about satirical reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln's personal life, by Cole Escola, who is also nominated as its star; and The Hills of California by Jez Butterworth, a family drama set in a declining British seaside town. Notable revivals nominated are Gypsy, Sunset Blvd., and Our Town.
Some of this season's Hollywood heavyweights were also nominated, including George Clooney in his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck, and Sarah Snook, who plays more than two dozen characters in the one-woman reimagination of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
But high-priced Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, was completely left out of the nominations.
Leading acting nominations in musicals include Jonathan Groff for his performance as Bobby Darin in Just in Time and six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald in the legendary role of Mama Rose in the revival of Gypsy.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday, June 8, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. This year's awards will be hosted by Oscar-winner Wicked star Cynthia Erivo. Reuters

Tom Felton returns as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway

Tom Felton will return to the stage as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, marking his debut on the Great White Way. Felton will begin performances on November 11, 2025, for a 19-week engagement, running through March 22, 2026. This will be the first time a cast member from the original Harry Potter film series has joined the Broadway production of the play. Set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Cursed Child follows the now-adult characters, including Draco Malfoy, as they navigate the challenges of parenthood while sending their children off to Hogwarts. Felton, who portrayed the infamous Slytherin in the Harry Potter films, shared his excitement about returning to the role, saying it will be a 'full-circle moment' for him. At the age of Draco's character in the play, Felton feels a special connection to the role and expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with the "greatest fan community" in the world. The production, which originally opened at the Lyric Theatre in 2018, was modified after the pandemic. The Broadway version was condensed into a single, 3.5-hour show, compared to its original two-part format. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender highlighted the significance of Felton's return to the role, noting that his portrayal of Draco as an adult facing parenthood and legacy will bring fresh depth to the character. 'We feel incredibly fortunate to welcome Tom into our Cursed Child family,' said the producers, emphasizing the excitement of fans worldwide to see Felton back as the iconic Malfoy. This marks a milestone for both Felton's career and the ongoing success of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.

Michelle Obama says daughters distancing themselves from fame to earn success on their own

US First Lady Michelle Obama hosts Broadway Shines A Light on Girls' Education at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater in Manhattan, New York, US, September 19, 2016. PHOTO: REUTERS Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently opened up about how her daughters, Malia and Sasha, continue to distance themselves from their family's high-profile legacy. Speaking on the Sibling Revelry podcast with Kate and Oliver Hudson, Michelle reflected on their journey into adulthood and their desire to earn success on their own terms. Michelle highlighted a key example: Malia's decision to debut her directorial work, The Heart, at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival under the name 'Malia Ann,' omitting her well-known last name. 'We were like, 'They're still going to know it's you,'' Michelle recalled. 'But we respected the fact that she's trying to make her way.' 'They definitely went through a 'push away' phase in their teens,' she said. 'And they're still doing that. It's very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world.' Michelle and Barack Obama have both acknowledged their daughters' efforts to forge their own identities. During an appearance on The Pivot Podcast in 2024, Barack echoed the sentiment, saying that Malia and Sasha are 'very sensitive' and 'stubborn' about not leveraging their parents' fame. 'I told Malia, 'You know they'll still recognize you,'' he said. 'She just said, 'I want them to watch it without any assumptions.'' Both parents expressed admiration for their daughters' independence, underscoring their commitment to building lives and careers guided by merit and personal authenticity—rather than public legacy.
